Chicken hoophouse

Cvk,

Thanks for the link - excellent site!

A question though, using a chicken tractor like that, how much acreage would you need in order to keep the poultry rotated to fresh pasture?

Thanks again!

Deb - well, if you have an 8'x9' "footprint" and move it twice a day (meaning covering 3 patches a day), that ain't a lot of space needed...

I can tell you now if you have coons in your area once they find your henhouse you will have a visit from them every night until your chicken are gone.

The only way you will prevent this is to have the whole thing covered in wire they can not get though or pull a chick through.

I had a large wire and wood cage I built with chicks in it and they would grab the chick nearest the wire through enough to kill it then chew what they wanted leaving the rest of the dead chick. You can not scare these critters off. You can scream at them beat on the wall at them throw water at them but they will just back off a few feet then come back as soon as you go inside. Eventually they figure out you are no real threat so just sit there looking at you looking like a dummy screaming your head off beating on the wall. You will have to kill the coons or you need to entirely seal the area with double walls of wire a chick cannot be pulled through.

BTW, If you plan to kill the coons make sure nothing is downrange from the target which you could hit. My house and car were always in the way plus if I had shot my gun someone in the area of all the new expensive houses would have called the police I am sure

It has an electirc fence wire around the whole thing at the bottom and is covered by a tarp on 3 sides. A person could use one of those battery operated fencers. Every year the coons eat all of our goose eggs. Two years ago they started killing chickens and we live trapped and destroyed 15 in just a few days!!!!!!!!!

Visit the Firearms SIG for tips on low-auditory-signature rounds. A .22lr w/ some (perfectly legal) CB "Caps" will tend to your coon issues w/o drawing unwanted attention to your activities.

I *assume* a good pellet rifle of 750+ fps velocities would do as well.

i agree with outlands, i've used 22 CB shorts to kill large dogs as well as armadillos and coons. they're so quiet you can almost hear the firing pin strike the shell.

i built a storage shed just like that coop once. it lasted for two years and cost me only $30. they'd also make good greenhouses or emergency shelters.
