TECH Cell phone virus?????

Loretta Van Riet

Trying to hang out with the cool kids.
Help! When I access wifi internet on my Android phone a creepy voice announces
"congratulations!" Then this message appears:

Congratulations Amazon user!. We have specially selected you to receive Amazon rewards for your loyalty. This gift is exclusive to Amazon users in Illinois.

Click OK to confirm".

Yikes! Now what do I do?

It just sounds like some sort of pop up ad more so than a virus.

Google it and see if you get any hits.

Otherwise I'd just ignore it and try to find some ad blocker apps.

Close out all screens. Your phone might have a feature where it automatically opens to the last page. In which case you have to quickly change the page before the pop-up reappears.

I've had it happened a couple times. It's annoying. But it doesn't do any lasting damage.

I've had that happen also. I just turned my phone off for a bit. Then I turned it on and ran virus/malware scans. Nothing came up and it didn't happen again.

On my iPhone I have occasionally gone to places I should not have been and got trapped with threatening messages that I cannot escape from. Close whatever you are in, go to the control section of your browser or whatever, delete its history, you should be fine. You may need to translate this advice to your OS.

As an amateur, how does one run virus scans on cell phone?
