FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE - CINCINNATI, June 9, 2010 – The Procter & Gamble Company (P&G) (NYSE:PG) is voluntarily recalling specific lots of its Iams canned cat food in North America as a precautionary measure. Diagnostic testing indicated that the product may contain insufficient levels of thiamine (Vitamin B1), which is essential for cats. Cats that were fed these canned products as their only food are at greater risk for developing signs of thiamine deficiency.

The following Iams canned cat foods are included:

Product Name- Iams ProActive Health canned Cat and Kitten Food – all varieties of 3 oz & 5.5 oz cans
Date on Bottom of Can- 09/2011 to 06/2012

This recall is limited to only Iams canned cat food distributed in North America. No other Iams pet food is involved.

Early signs of thiamine deficiency may include loss of appetite, salivation, vomiting and weight loss. In advanced cases, signs may include ventroflexion (downward curving) of the neck, wobbly gait, falling, circling and seizures. Contact your veterinarian immediately if your cat is displaying any of these signs. If treated promptly, thiamine deficiency is typically reversible.

Consumers who have purchased canned cat food with these codes should discard it. For further information or a product refund call P&G toll-free at 877-340-8826 (Monday – Friday, 9:00 AM to 7:00 PM EST).

Iams is supposed to be good stuff but it is NOT! Iams brand Dog Food gave my dog Bladder stones! She had so many that she must have really been in a lot of pain. The largest ones were bigger than walnuts! I only buy very expensive organic dog food now. It will save thousands in Vet bills.

I feed my cats dry Iams but had to restrict them to 1/4 cup twice a day because they were gaining too much weight.
This makes it a very economical food. FYI I have 11 cats.

Well, shoot. My elderly cat hasn't been feeling well, so we took her to the vet, who gave us a bunch of pills for her to take, plus told us to feed her this stuff.

I just called the number listed. They will either send you a coupon for a bag of dried food, or give you a refund. I took the refund because the purpose was to not feed her dried food. The check takes 2 - 3 weeks, and they specifically wanted to know if she had had any problems from it.

Thanks for posting this, Relic. This could really have hurt her, since she's not well to begin with. :(

Iams canned is the only thing we feed our cat.She has had 2 surgerys for bladder stones. The vet thought it was from our hard well water so we store bought her water & still had to do another surgery.Guess now she will be eating something different.

I used to breed cats. Iams has a LOT of recalls. :(

One of my cats has some kind of upset stomach issue. The Vet had put her on Hills CD, but it seemed to marginally help.

I continued to feed them both canned Hills CD and Iams dry - the stomach issue seems much better and their weight seems to be good.

That said, since you have a lot of experience, can you recommend something else?

Thanks in advance . . .
