ERNUL, N.C. (WTVD) --

A desperate search for a missing 3-year-old boy in Craven County continued into the night Wednesday with no sign of the missing child.

Nearly 600 volunteers worked alongside trained professionals, their efforts made difficult by cold temperatures and rugged terrain.

"The terrain was woods. It was thick in places," said Max Dudley, a volunteer. "Some places it wasn't that thick, but we took our time and you see the next person, and you look and you look and you look."

By 9:30 p.m., volunteers had gone home for the night, but search-and-rescue efforts were planned overnight as the search for Casey Lynn Hathaway stretched into a second day.

Craven County Sheriff Chip Hughes said Casey was playing with two other relatives, also children, in his grandmother's backyard Tuesday, but didn't come inside with them.

Officials said the grandmother and others searched for Casey for 45 minutes before calling 911.

It's heartbreaking. I have two children so I can only imagine what the family is going through and we're a small community so you don't really expect anything bad to happen here," said Jonathan Ipock, youth pastor of New Haven Church.

Ipock said some of Casey's family attends his church.

"You have so many people volunteering from our community and surrounding areas because they were putting themselves in the shoes of the family," Ipock said. "What would happen if that was one of their children? It's just amazing to see everyone come together to help."

Hughes said his deputies have not ruled out any possibilities in the boy's disappearance, including "abduction or kidnapping." He said they're treating this as a missing child investigation and search.

The area that is being searched is extremely rugged, Hughes said Wednesday afternoon. The family has been cooperating fully, Hughes added.

The FBI, state investigators, and even Marines have joined the effort to find Casey. The Highway Patrol assisted on the ground and in the air.

People from as far as Wilmington and Kill Devil Hills came to join the search.

Temperatures were below freezing for six hours overnight in the Craven County area, according to National Weather Service data.

Hughes said Casey wasn't adequately dressed for the weather and he's concerned about sinkholes and deep water ditches in the area. He said divers are assessing nearby ponds.

Casey is 2'4", weighs 25 pounds, has strawberry blonde hair, and brown eyes.

He was last seen wearing a blue coat and dark-colored pants.

"We went through the woods - through the thicket and the briars," said volunteer Donna Harris, a mother of three. "We did it for three-and-a-half, four hours and it was bad. It was really bad out there. If everybody could come and help look for him, it would help. As it got darker, it was scary out there. I just can't imagine a 3-year-old being out there."

Anyone with information should call (252) 633-0498 or the NC State Bureau of Investigation at (919) 662-4500.

Praying they find him in time. This is so terrifying. My toddler granddaughter moves like lightning, and has just discovered the concept of "hide and seek". (No idea where she learned it! Her parents haven't played it with her). But what it means is she suddenly disappears... and she's "hiding", so shes not moving or making a sound.

She also will run off on their little farm, for fun... but in the dark, you can't see her.

I bought them several LED shoelaces... they flash, and make it so you can see the kid (as long as they don't take their shoes off) in the dark.

I wonder what the other kids' stories are?

Lord, protect this tiny one.

That would work as well, although for our kid, the shoelaces work well, because she leaves them on. A bracelet might be a little too visible to her, and I haven't yet seen anything short of a padlock she can't open!

Not wanting to drift the thread, but this truly is one of my nightmares.

Dear God, please protect that child, and guide the searchers to him, and to return him to safety !!!

deputies have not ruled out any possibilities

I hope not. While less of a rarity than in previous years, stranger kidnappings are not the usual thing to explain a missing kid.

Wonder if there is any family history of abuse?

ERNUL, N.C. —
Gone for more than 24 hours as temperatures drop to near freezing, a missing 3-year-old is the "number one priority" of police in North Carolina, officials said Wednesday.

Casey Lynn Hathaway was last seen playing with relatives outside his grandmother's house on Tuesday, according to WTVD. He didn't come inside when the others did.

The FBI, NCIS and dozens of volunteers have joined the effort to find the boy -- described by authorities as 25 pounds and 2 feet, 4 inches tall -- as extremely cold temperatures creep in.

"Casey is a small child," Craven County Sheriff Chip Hughes said at a Wednesday news conference. "He's cold, he's hungry."

Hughes said authorities are treating Casey's disappearance as a missing child case, but ask the community to report anything "remotely suspicious."

Temperatures are expected to fall to near freezing Thursday in the area near where Casey disappeared, Hughes said, creating concern for authorities, who already are facing rugged, difficult terrain.

Casey's family searched for 45 minutes before calling 911 Tuesday, Hughes said, and since then 10 to 12 other counties and 20 to 25 other sheriffs have joined the search, as have the FBI, NCIS and State Highway Patrol.

The U.S. Marine Corps also has also joined the search effort, Hughes said.
Authorities have employed helicopters, drones and K-9 units, Craven County Emergency Management Director Stanley Kite said Wednesday. Divers also are assessing nearby ponds, WTVD reported.

"Today, hundreds of professional searchers and volunteers walked through rough terrain around the home to try and locate Casey," the Craven County Sheriff's Office said Wednesday. "Volunteers were sent home for the night due to safety concerns. Professionally trained searchers will continue to work overnight. Additional search assets will return in the morning."

The sheriff's office has asked residents to check their properties for signs of the missing boy.

"It's heartbreaking. I have two children so I can only imagine what the family is going through and we're a small community so you don't really expect anything bad to happen here," Jonathan Ipock, youth pastor of New Haven Church, told WTVD.

Just looked at a aerial image of Ernul, Craven County, NC. Very rural, sparsely populated. Praying for a miracle. Lord please watch over and protect this child. Bring him safely home to his family. I can't imagine what the family is going thru.

Casey Hathaway has been found alive, Sheriff Chip Hughes has confirmed.

The 3-year-old boy had been missing since Tuesday afternoon in a rural, heavily-wooded area near Ernul off Aurora Road.

Per the Craven County Sheriff’s Office, “Casey has been found alive. He was located by professional search and rescue crews off Toler and Aurora Roads. He is in good health, is talking and being evaluated by doctors at Carolina East
Medical Center. He is with his family. Thank you all for helping us #FindCasey.”

No details have been given as to where he was found, but radio reports state he was being taken to a hyperbaric chamber.

Concern for the boy’s health had been high, with him being lost in the woods for two and a half days in freezing temperatures and heavy rain.

Hathaway had last been seen playing with relatives in the back yard of his grandmother’s house at 200 Toler Road at around 1 p.m. Tuesday. After his grandmother noticed him missing she searched for him for about a half hour before calling 911.

Since that time hundreds of volunteers have combed the woods with the help of numerous law enforcement agencies, aircraft, and dogs.

″(Casey) is in good health, is talking and being evaluated by doctors at CarolinaEast Medical Center,” said FBI Public Affairs Specialist Shelley Lynch in a news release. “He is with his family. Thank you all for helping us #FindCasey.”

Amazing. I thought we were going to hear bad news on this one because he’s so young. It will be interesting to hear details on how he survived. God and Angels has to be part of it.

(My name was changed from Koonce to Townsend when I was adopted by my aunt after my mother died when I was thirteen months old. BT)

"The Koonce family of North Carolina originated in the Palatinate, the region along the upper Rhine River in Southern Germany, which supplied a large proportion of the Swiss and German colonists who founded the town of New Bern, NC in 1710 under the leadership of Baron Christopher De Graffenreid. The founder of the family in North Carolina was Johann Christian Kunitzsli, which was anglicized to John Koonce. John, his wife, and six children, survived the hardships of the voyage to America only to encounter worst misfortunes upon arrival in Virginia in April 1710.

These Palatines who survived the arduous voyage traveled on foot to Colonel Thomas Pollock's plantation on the Chowan River instead of re-embarking in Virginia, because of the Privateers and the Sand Bars at the mouth of the James River. From there they crossed the Albemarle Sound into Bath County and were located in May or June by John Lawson on land between the Neuse and Trent Rivers, called by the Indians "Chattooka." They brought their Bibles, Hymn books, catechisms and long guns. It was from the long guns, originated and made exclusively in the Rhineland Region, that the famous Kentucky long rifles evolved. They settled on plantations allotted to them along the Neuse and Trent Rivers and their tributaries and lived prosperously until September 1711. When the tribes of the Tuscarora Indians became increasingly incensed by the encroachments of the white settlers, they combined forces and laid waste a large area, massacring a large proportion on the colonists, including one-third of the Swiss and Palatines of New Bern. John Koonce and his family, with the exception of one son, George, were included in this slaughter by the Indians."
