I have about 6 dozen canning jars and I know I won,t have enough from my garden this year to try out some caning....my question is what else can I use them for...I hate to sit them sit there in the boxs doing nothing...I will be washing them up till I get some replies...as i did get most of them from yard sales...and I have a shelf that once they are filled with something that they can go on...and no we don,t have a farmers market up here or I would go pick or buy fruits to put in them and make jams and such(frozen thundra here)....I thought maybe rice or barley and would I have to vacuum seal the canning jars and how would I do that...

Kellee... you don't HAVE TO vacuum seal anything like flour, sugar, rice, barley, noodles, etc... and all of them store quite well in canning jars.

Vacuum sealing does extend the life of the stuff inside... by years, in some cases. And if you happen to have any tiny insects or eggs in there when you pack it, vacuum sealing will deprive them of oxygen and keep them from multiplying.

But if you put clean food into clean jars... just put on lids and store. You can buy plastic lids for canning jars which are handy for storage, but if you're careful you can use regular jar lids and rings and still be able to use them the next year for actual canning. Or you can re-use "used" canning jar lids for dry storage.. just wash and dry them well first.

Otherwise, I've suggested to people that they refill any canning jar with fresh, potable water as soon as they empty and clean the jar and lid. That means if you've got 6 dozen quart jars, you've got 72 quarts or 18 gallons of fresh drinking water stored in the same space the jars would be taking anyway. Win/win

I've probably got twice or more the canning jars tied up in dry packed vacuum sealed foods than I have in wet packed foods.

That's a great idea.

I had thought of water in them...I do my empty 2 litre pop bottles with water and add 3-4 drops of normal house bleach and then I wax the tops(just an extra precaution and I can re-use the wax...would you suggest adding couple of drops of bleach also with the canning jars(and I also have pool shock)(I live 2 minute walk to the lake of clean water)...I have come across a couple of receipes for bread in canning jars...here in Canada we cannot buy canned bread ...has anyone ever tried canned bread and if so how where the results and how long does it last...

I would start the bread today but I have to go get eggs(in a bit maybe) its raining here and finally nice and cool...I know don,t tease....:D
