California Restaurants Forced To Cut Jobs As Newsom’s Minimum Wage Hike Looms

Restaurant owners in California are resorting to laying off employees in preparation for a minimum wage hike for fast food workers, according to The Wall Street Journal.

Democratic California Gov. Gavin Newsom signed a bill in 2022 that empowers a state-appointed council to set wages, working conditions and training standards for fast food restaurants. Businesses, particularly pizza joints that employ delivery drivers who can be replaced by outside services, are cutting employees in response to the state’s plan to hike its hourly minimum wage for fast food workers from $16 to $20 beginning April 1, according to the WSJ.

Franchise owners of Pizza Hut and Round Table Pizza have already reported to the state that they will be laying off around 1,280 delivery drivers this year in preparation for the wage hike, according to the WSJ.

“This is the reality of today’s restaurants,” a spokeswoman for Fat Brands, owner of Round Table Pizza locations in California, told the WSJ. “Operators are doing their best to retain staff and keep doors open.”

California had 726,000 fast food workers as of January, which is down 1.3% from last September, while total private employment fell 0.2% in that same time, according to the WSJ. Some California restaurants are turning to automation to adjust to the increase in the cost of labor, such as El Pollo Loco, which told investors that it would be automating some of the process for its salsa-making.

The wage hike has been embroiled in controversy due to an exemption in the law that permits chains that bake and sell stand-alone bread as a menu item, such as Panera, to not raise pay. Greg Flynn owns two dozen Panera chains in the state and gave over $160,000 to campaigns for Newsom.

“It pains me to think about shutting down stores or laying people off,” Alexander Johnson, who owns 10 Auntie Anne’s and Cinnabon restaurants in California, told the WSJ. “I love California, and I’m very sad about what’s going on.”

Johnson says the wage hike would raise labor costs by around $470,000, which has led him to reduce his staff by about 10 people, the WSJ reported.

The California governor’s office did not immediately respond to a request to comment from the Daily Caller News Foundation.

I wonder how many CA restruantuers are suddenly adding a stand-alone bread item to their menus. Just bake 10 of them each morning and when they are gone they are gone. Suddenly you aren't subject to the law. If they are smart, all of them will do this.

Local restaurants are now adding an automatic 25% tip, and asking that patrons not leave cash tips on the table. The cited reason is to ensure the back of house staff also get tips.

Was viewing some video news and some places closed shop and one restaurant owner had sent every one home (laid off) and started moving all the equipment out to another state was said he owned four restaurants.

That should be illegal. Adding it automatically changes it from being a tip to being the cost of the meal. Tips should be voluntary. Imagine if a carpenter told you he would build you a nice big new home for $400,000 but add on 25% for tips for his workers. Suddenly the price goes up to $500,000 for the home.

On The Level
Between inflation, tipping expectations, and the activist mindset of our divided population keep me away from restaurants now. Tried a couple of tiny double cheeseburgers, pint of french fries, and med Diet Coke a couple week ago from a local joint. It was gross and under cooked, soggy fries. $20 down the drain, glad they don't have tipping.

The more they do this, the more restaurants will layoff workers, the worse restaurant experiences will be, the fewer people will go to restaurants, the more restaurants will fail, causing more people to lose their jobs...I'm not an economist, but this doesn't seem to be a productive pattern.

Personally we don't go to restaurants anymore. My fifteen year old said it best..."Daddy is a better cook and people are rude."

I am a competent cook. My husband is an amazing cook.

Cut way back on dining out. Value not there for the money. Use coupons for fast food.
Same with us. We also added the Sonic and McDonald’s app as we frequent both.
MdDonalds has a 15 or 20% discount that can be used once daily off a small minimum amount order.
Use coupons and building points for our Hardee’s, Dominos, and subway.

Democrats policies are purposefully fast tracking automation, to transform and eliminating jobs in the markets they try to control...everything they touch turns to $h!t.

A fast food restaurant recently opened in California with robot chefs and AI kiosks.

Machines don't get paid $20 an hour.

They don't call in sick, don't need benefits, smoke breaks, vacation, healthcare, or pronouns!

Or organize unions and raise dues to pay Democrats to organize unions and riot.

Think Fast Food Prices are Insane NOW? THIS Will Make Inflation MUCH WORSE (8min)

California’s new $20 minimum wage law for fast food restaurants is wrecking small towns. Glenn reviews the plight of the town of Lemoore, California, where business are laying people off, raising prices, or even closing due to the strain these government edicts have put on them. But how long until these progressive policies spread to other states?
