The exercises will be held from June 28 to July 10 in the Black Sea, they will involve 5,000 servicemen and 32 ships from 32 countries.

"The scale of the Ukrainian-American Sea Breeze exercise in the Black Sea increases the risk of unintentional incidents in the Black Sea." (RIA)

Note they are worried about the UNintentional incidents, not the scheduled and minutely planned ones.

Another repost: Russia's response from earlier today, presumably prior to this incident, suggesting concern with the US and it's allies exercises in the black sea... as I indicated I'd assume this was the connection behind the incident

There aren't 32 countries with borders on the Black Sea.

The added spice is that there was a US intelligence gathering aircraft in the area, possibly to gauge the nature of the Russian response to the UK's violation of the Russian territorial waters.

It will be interesting to see if this comes up in the PM questions in the next UK Parliament session and if so to see how it's handled.

The Brits defensive posture?
The Brits were 3 miles inside Russian waters.
That is not defensive. It is offensive. Boats have been sunk for less.

This doesn't look like a deliberate move from looking at the ship's course.
New navigation standards from a "woke" navy.

I can see a Captain being replaced for bad navigation.

Imagine if Russian warships conducted war games in the Gulf of Mexico, say, 13 miles off the coast of Tampa-St. Petersburg or near New Orleans or Houston (neither of which are right on the coast). Then imagine that one of the Russian ships went inside our territorial waters, say ten miles from Tampa.

The US Military-Industrial Complex would have a hysterical field day with their lapdog press and we'd be on the verge of war.

The US and its allies do this sh*t on a regular basis and other countries are supposed to just compliantly roll over and say "More Sir, please."

As Dylan once said long ago, the times they are a changin'.

Not to be dramatic here, but we actually may very well be on the verge of war.

I recall the mileage from the island(s), but how far into US space is that ?
Officially 35 miles. However the Hawaiian Islands consist of over 130 small Island that are not habitable, we think. So where is the 35 mile mark. Is that from an inhabited island or completely out from the whole chain of islands? It doesn't matter since the whole show was to demonstrate what a useless meat sack we have as POTUS and we are ripe for the picking.

"My data"?
That is precious. . . .

We, they, them, us . . . we all perform "freedom of navigation" in the air and sea "all the time"
for no other reason than to prove we can.
And when it is done, there is usually at least 2 navigators using two sources to ensure we are "on the imaginary dotted line" that mark the border. And those navigators are not second string for either side.

The only data that matters is the British Destroyer's and the data used by the Russian patrol ship and the fighter.

Shots were fired . . . there will be an investigation . . . the public will not likely know the outcome . . .

We have contested the Crimean election that Russia used to justify annexation of Crimea and so
I am not even a little surprised that the territorial waters around Crimea are being tested by our side.

Yes, My data. As in, My own research, OSINT type, practiced weekly, with sources both public and personal. Please let the adults talk, perhaps you might learn something.
(yes, I know in bad taste and slightly offensive, but I do spent quite a bit of time and energy researching this stuff, my blood sugar is low making me touchy, and I have the biggest snowflake of a coworker being lazy, thus increasing my bad mood. )
apologies in advance Raven

What seems to be radio transmissions between Russian Border Guards and HMS Defender. Also the transmission hints that HNLMS Evertsen was mentioned in the transmission.
Negotiations between the destroyer Defender and Russian border guards in violation of the Russian border in Crimea (5min)

The Russian military opened warning fire at the course of the British destroyer Defender, which entered the territorial waters of the Russian Federation in the Black Sea near Cape Fiolent, according to the Russian Defense Ministry.

“At 11:52 on June 23 p. The destroyer URO Defender of the British Navy, operating in the northwestern part of the Black Sea, crossed the state border of the Russian Federation and entered the territorial sea in the area of Cape Fiolent for 3 km, ”the military department said.

“At 12:06 and 12:08 the border patrol ship fired warning shots.

At 12:19 pm, the Su-24M aircraft performed precautionary bombing (4 OFAB-250) along the course of the URO Defender destroyer, ”the military department stressed. The explosion of a ton of explosives along the course had the necessary effect.

As the Ministry of Defense clarified, at 12:23 pm, thanks to the joint actions of the Black Sea Fleet and the Border Service of the FSB of Russia, the destroyer URO Defender left the borders of the territorial sea of the Russian Federation.

Its a battleship and there was a reconnaissance flight in the area.
and then we learned that the Russians were conducting an exercise in the area.

Professional opinion. Battleships do not simply wander about. I doubt the accuracy of the "News" report.

I have no need to present my credentials other than to say they are professional in nature and derive from operational experience in the AOR.

Ukraine says Russian shots at British ship show 'aggressive' Russian policy

KYIV (Reuters) - Ukraine’s Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba said on Wednesday that Russia’s firing of warning shots at a British ship showed Russia’s aggressive and provocative policy that constituted a threat to Ukraine and its allies.
“A clear proof of Ukraine’s position: Russia’s aggressive and provocative actions in the Black and Azov seas, its occupation & militarization of Crimea pose a lasting threat to Ukraine and allies,” Kuleba said on Twitter.
“We need a new quality of cooperation between Ukraine & NATO allies in the Black Sea,” he added.

Well if they keep this up there wish will be granted
they are certainly spewing the propaganda loud enough.
and there are certainly plenty of people eat up the "evil Russian" mantra.

We are having military exercises in the Black Sea.
It would be like the Russians having military exercises on the Canadian side of Lake Superior.

Regarding the
@HMSDefender
Incident on the Black Sea what is going on in #Sevastopol, at least one Russian Kilo-class attack submarine sailed out. Other subs are currently worked on actively with weapons handling crane working on their torpedo room area 1/3 There is also a sudden influx of Raptor/BK-16 combat boats in the docks, with at least 5 visible this morning. In addition to the 5-6 large landing ships. Grachonok-class anti-diver boats complete the boat squadron. 2/3 As for surface combatants at least the Frigate Admiral Grigorovich was taking on supplies and two Buyan-M class Corvettes on their regular spots, but probably at least one corvette and frigate out. 3/3

The official distances are three miles, based on how far a shot can go, 12 miles and 200 miled based on a un treaty for the economic zone.
Not sure if the USA has signed the 200 mile un exclusion zone un tfeaty. Reagan had some issues with it. Still, 3 mile penetration is flipping Putin off. Doc1, what would happen if a couple of Russian DD,s anchored 3 miles off of San Diego?:arg:

I agree on the news issue.

Still believe a navigational error. 2 miles at sea won't get you much more or more accurate information.
From recent examples Im still leaning on "woke" Navy standards.
