I think whether we do or don't shop for holiday gifts during "black Friday" or otherwise, we need to be careful about being self-righteous about it. Some people don't shop because they can't. Some people don't shop because they won't. Some people shop because they can.
Personally I've been doing the black Friday thing since I was a young newly wed. It is how we could afford to do gift giving and then when the children came along it was even more budget conscious for us. A little work for a lot of return as it were. Hubby and I made it a tradition until last year when he just no longer felt the pull to get up early in the morning. Last year my oldest daughter and I did it (she is now married) and it was fun. However, we both had a list, plan, and budget and stuck to it.
I also shop on black Friday because it allows hubby and I to continue our charitable giving to various programs ... we'll secretly help one or two of our most in need tenants and/or a family member of a tenant, we help kids at the local shelters, we give stuff for the raffles that support local charities, toys for tots, kids at the local children's hospitals, local ALFs, homebound members of our church, Loft 181 which is a support program for foster girls in our county run by our church, etc.
Without that weekend of special sales it is doubtful that we could do what we try and do each year. We'd still do some but not to the extent that we've come to consider our service and calling to do.
We each have our reasons and frankly so long as we aren't endangering our family through irresponsible spending then no one has the right to tell you what to do one way or the other. To me that is too much like the government telling us what we can and can't do, wealth redistribution plans, etc. If I make the choice to redistribute my wealth that is one thing, I don't want anyone else telling me whether I can and to whom it must go.
I also try and spread a little Christmas cheer while I'm out ... must be different in the South because most of us are just out having a good time to begin with ... and I'll leave a tract telling the real Christmas story in various places.
