The guys on Fox News are not happy either. Maybe this will help the media get the truth of what is going on, out of the government.:sb:

A&L,

Was he pissed at media, gov. or Taliban/terrorists??

Did he say something to show it or just frowning big or something??

I didn't see him had switched to Blather.

He is incredibly angry, controlled fury.
Never seen or heard a major news anchor speak his mind like that.
The anthrax envelope was addressed to him and his assistant has cutaneous anthrax.

He is no longer "unbiased!"

Thank God!

The media is getting the "personal touch" and they are making a hard right turn.

Must have the exact verbatim words he said at the end of the news.

According to
http://www.msnbc.com/news/642224.asp

these were his closing words:

Broadcast close

"Finally tonight, on behalf of all of us at NBC News Ñ and especially on behalf of our colleague Ñ thank you for your concern. SheÕs a rock, and sheÕs been an inspiration to us all Ñ but this is unfair and outrageous and maddening beyond my ability to express in socially acceptable terms. So weÕll reserve our thoughts and prayers for our friend and her family."

But it seemed much stronger than that!

Our iMac can't view the video on the above link ...

Casci's,

I posted what follows on another thread and it really belongs on this one.

A further thought being "I wonder why he's (Tom Brokaw) is Pissed tonight, not 10 days ago?

from another thread:

NBC NEWS Staffer started taking Cipro on Oct.1!!

Strange how we don't hear about it until Oct. 12! That's only 11 days to get the word out, my -- guess WE don't need to be concerned. WE don't need to prepare, WE don't need to know what to look out for.

WTF? Who's interest does the NEWS serve these days, if we were not at WAR - I'd say boycot those arrogant SOB's. Wonder how the folks who're in Reno, WI, State Dept, etc., would of responded if they'd heard Tom Brokaw simply do his job and report the NEWS. Such As: Terrorists are using the US Postal Service/mail services, to deliver bio-weapons. Criminal Corporate Government Cover Up B.S.!

IMHO, covering up the terror only presses the terrorists to hit harder. Things like hit a WTC tower and then hit the other 20 minutes later to make sure the word gets out! We've been hammered by the terrorists for years. Covering up things like TWA 800, really gets their gears grinding to make sure they'll do something, no one can deny.

As far as the panic factor goes my response is, "look, we're at WAR"! "Got it?" "It's on our soil, here at home, in the USA!" "Get it?" "There are people here trying to kill you, understand?" Life aint normal anymore, each day is never guaranteed, and now the odds working against you.

Now, get the glazed look out of your eye and snap out of it, we're going to have to work through this, if you're going to tweak out, and get wiggy with it -- get the hell out of the way. You're going to end up toast with the "it can't happen here" attitude. Quit trying to "hope it away". Quit trying to make believe it's not happening. Face facts and deal with it.

The more mamby pandering, and covering up the PTB's do -- in the interest of the safety of the people -- the worse it's going to get.

A & L, don't know if you can view that video either. When he says it's beyond his ability to express in socially acceptable terms, you can tell he's pretty upset.

Brokaw Letter Postmarked St. Petersburg, Florida

The letter containing Anthrax that was addressed to Brokaw, opened by his assistant and infected her with cutaneous Anthrax was postmarked "St. Petersburg, Florida". That is in the Tampa Bay Area. I am in Tampa and that post office is a very close drive from where I live.

I know I will be looking more closely at my mail even though the infected mail originated here and was sent to New York. The fact that it originated here ... means that the people with the Anthrax bacteria to mail ... are here or have connections here to mail the letters and/or packages.

I am very concerned.

Well, let's see if these folks NOW have the brains/balls to use the powerful weapon they have been using to take selective potshots at the Constitution for the last 30 years. It's way past time for the major media outlets to realize that the promotion of the Constitution, and ALL ten amendments of the Bill of Rights, is the ONLY way to preserve EVERYONE'S freedoms.

Maybe now they will realize that their ass is on the line also. Will the big money handlers be able to suppress what the media can really do?

What was it William Randolph Hearst said to his reporter in Cuba after the explosion on the Maine, "You file the reports, I'll supply the war"?

Granted, direction is a problem, but I will be interested to see if, now that the media have been targeted, they will truly beat the war drums and fan the patriotic flames of "God and Country".

Some how I doubt that the talking heads will be so enthused about airing Ossama bin Laden's videos after this.

They have reported on the groundswell of patriotism that has swept the country, let's see if they now want to participate. It still strikes me that it has been a rather dispassionate reporting, without much enthusiasm or conviction.

"You are with us, or you are with the terrorists." The media have reported it, but I don't think they understand it yet. (Maybe Tom Brokaw does now.)

Civil defense isn't crazy, and "Homeland Defense" isn't about giving up freedoms. It's about individualism and self-reliance, and the can-do independent attitude that built this nation. I hope that this independent mind set will again take the prominence that it had in the building of this great republic.

There is only one defense against these animals, and that is the extermination of every rabid animal that believes that the murder of innocent women and children is a "political statement".

Yes, I saw this segment being replayed on Fox News!
He was really upset by this and it was so so so much more
stronger in hearing him say this then just reading his words.
I have also heard this being repeatedly over and over again
on the Fox News Channel tonight. This it seems has really
irked the media. Hope this really wakes some in the media up
before it is too late.

Also will mention this, Tom Brokaw visited the headwaters of
the Yellowstone River last summer in July on a fishing trip.
This happened when I was back there myself, sure did
give me a surprise. Creator Bless!

Tom, we echo your feelings.
Ppl just do not cognize we are at WAR.
Unfortunately more attacks on homeland USA may wake the sleeples up.
We are astonished at our own feelings, which are also, erhm, not suitable for public broadcast

Finally we're seeing some concrete prep advice come out --
And FBI HHS advocation of how to (not) handle mail, etc.

But the ideals of self-reliance and neighborhood homeland defense need to be addressed directly and repeatedly.

"Terrorists are using the US Postal Service/mail services, to deliver bio-weapons." Correct! The "be normal, go shop, buy a car, go to the mall, go to a ball game, spend, economy, etc" is a little transparent.

Of course the economy needs to chug along, but the fact of WAR and certain precautions need to take precedence.

Thanks all of you who saw this and wrote your impressions.

We sense a sea-change ... sea sick over here ...

The media NEEDS to confront reality and report the facts!

Does anyone know what date the letter was mailed? I'd be interested to know just how long it took for the woman to realize she'd been infected.

I'd also be interested to know how long it took for the 'news' to get out.....

NBC Employee Tests Positive for Anthrax in New York

Fox News
Friday, October 12, 2001

NEW YORK — The woman who contracted the skin form of anthrax is an assistant to NBC anchorman Tom Brokaw, authorities said Friday.

The NBC employee is expected to recover. Authorities said she was possibly infected by the bacterium when she opened an envelope containing a suspicious powder sent to Brokaw two weeks after the Sept. 11 attacks.

Video: HHS Sec. Thompson on NBC Anthrax Exposure
Video: Attorney General Ashcroft on Anthrax Investigation

The letter was postmarked from Florida, as was another suspicious letter received at the offices of the New York Times, according to officials.

Officials added there was no known connection to either the Sept. 11 attacks or the far more dangerous inhaled form of anthrax that killed a supermarket tabloid editor in Florida last week.

In Nevada, a letter sent to a Microsoft office in Reno originally tested positive for anthrax before a second test indicated it probably did not contain the bacterium, state health officials said. The letter had been sent to the Microsoft Licensing Inc. office from Malaysia.

A third test is planned, and the FBI is involved, according to state epidemiologist Dr. Randy Todd. Results of that test should be available Saturday.

A federal criminal investigation has been launched to learn the origin of the letter sent to the New York Times, and health officials planned to re-test powder to see if it contained the germ. Initial tests on a small sample revealed no sign of anthrax.

A city still reeling from the World Trade Center disaster was shaken by word of the disease. News organizations increased mailroom security nationwide. And the postmaster general advised everyone to be on the lookout for suspicious letters and packages.

President Bush said the government was working to ensure public safety.

"The American people need to go about their lives. We cannot let terrorists lock our country down," Bush said, addressing the anthrax case at a White House event celebrating Hispanic heritage. "They will not take this country down."

The nation's fourth anthrax case in a week was reported early Friday by the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention after tests were completed on a skin sample from the victim. Further tests are under way.

"The amount we got was so small we are very being cautious about interpreting," CDC Deputy Director David Fleming said.

The CDC said it is possible the NBC employee contracted anthrax from something other than the envelope.

Part of the 70-story GE Building in Rockefeller Center, which houses Brokaw's "Nightly News," "Saturday Night Live" and "Late Night with Conan O'Brien" was evacuated.

On condition of anonymity, NBC officials confirmed that the employee who tested positive was a Brokaw assistant. One official said that Brokaw, an 18-year veteran of NBC's evening newscasts, was being tested for anthrax.

"Living in New York and working in this building for this company, you're already on edge," said Brian Rolapp, 29, a business development manager for NBC. "I think everyone is a little startled that it's this close to home."

A few blocks away, two floors of The New York Times building were evacuated Friday after Judith Miller, a reporter who co-wrote a recent best seller on bioterrorism, opened a letter containing a powder-like substance a spokeswoman said smelled like talcum powder.

Executive Editor Howell Raines said initial tests showed that the powder did not pose any immediate problem, and air tests for radioactive and chemical substances were negative.

The Associated Press, located across the street from NBC, temporarily closed its mailroom, as did CBS. ABC halted internal mail delivery in New York and Washington pending a security evaluation, while CNN said it had closed its mailrooms in New York, Washington and Atlanta.

Time Inc. and Newsweek suspended mail delivery in their New York headquarters. The Wall Street Journal told employees worldwide not to open packages or letters that are not specifically addressed to them.

In Los Angeles, authorities are investigating an anthrax scare on the third floor of the Los Angeles Times Building. Security personnel told employees to remain in the building until tests could be performed, according to a Los Angeles Times employee.

The skin and inhaled forms of anthrax are caused by the same bacterium. The only difference is whether the microscopic spores enter the skin through a cut or are inhaled into the lungs. It takes more than 8,000 spores to cause the inhalation form of anthrax. Neither form of anthrax can be spread directly from person to person.

When caught through the skin, anthrax is a much less serious disease. The first symptoms are reddish-black sores on the skin. The disease is easily cured if it is caught at that point and treated with antibiotics. Even without treatment, cutaneous anthrax is lethal in only one case out of 20.

Dr. Scott Lillibridge, the bioterrorism chief for the U.S. Health and Human Services Department, said the NBC employee is thought to have come in contact with the envelope on Sept. 25. Three days later, she noticed a dark-colored lesion, Lillibridge said, and on Oct. 1 began taking the antibiotic Cipro for another infection.

Mayor Rudolph Giuliani said all network employees exposed to the powder will be tested for anthrax and treated with Cipro.

"People should not overreact to this," Giuliani said. "Much of this is being done to allay people's fears."

Last Friday, a photo editor for The Sun supermarket tabloid in Boca Raton, Fla., died of the more serious inhaled form of anthrax. The American Media building where Bob Stevens, 63, worked was sealed off after anthrax was found on his keyboard.

Traces of anthrax were later found in the mailroom. Two other employees turned out to have anthrax in their nasal passages, although neither has developed the disease. Both are taking antibiotics, and one has returned to work.

In Florida, FBI agent Hector Pesquera said test results of 965 people who were in the building recently found no new infections. A few test results were still pending. Pesquera said investigators are still trying to determine how the anthrax got into the building.

Fifteen clerks who worked in the South Florida post office that handled American Media's mail were also tested, a union official said.

Also on Friday, two corporate jets were ordered to land by the Federal Aviation Administration after an air traffic controller heard the word "anthrax" used on a cockpit radio frequency. One jet landed in Austin, Texas, and the other in Tulsa, Oklahoma.

The jet ordered to land in Austin was checked by the FBI and allowed to continue, while Tulsa was the intended final destination for the other plane.

Separately, Health and Human Services Secretary Tommy Thompson said Friday that the Bush administration planned to ask Congress for $643 million to expand the nation's capability to handle biological attacks.

The money will be used to increase supplies of pharmaceutical drugs and anthrax antibiotics, as well as to fortify health systems throughout the country, Thompson told newspaper editors in Wisconsin via video from Washington.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.

NOT to be alarmist, but something to file under the "What If" from Bunker:

I have said publicly that I believe that recent "anthrax" attacks,
focusing on the media, will be blamed on the militia/right wing
and/or Christian groups.

The Reno, Nevada anthrax was mailed to Microsoft in Reno.

The anti-gun crusader who was murdered in Seattle last night had
filed a huge lawsuit against gun manufacturers. The lawsuit was
funded by.... MICROSOFT.

The Terror focus is changing. You will hear the words DOMESTIC
terrorism alot very soon.

Buckle UP.

Giddy UP.

Word is, if ONE case of Smallpox is announced, the roadblocks and checkpoints go up.

Interesting post DJ, something to think about. And so very
much true as concerning smallpox. What will be the implications
IF JUST ONE case of Smallpox shows up? Remember Anthrax
is NOT conntagious but SMALLPOX is espicelly contagious. And
one could expect the people to really PANIC if this does start to
show up. Hmmmm! Hope that everyone does have their
Bug Out Bags Ready! It could be a very rough ride!
May The Creator Bless!

i don't think i like the direction this is taking. you've got preserving the Constitution, gun rights and domestic terrorism all in the same thread. are we talking revolution here? not that i'd mind seeing shrubya leave a little early. (he has how much longer??)

but hey, if it's time, it's time. but, opportunites abound for those who would attack US soil both within and without. bad time for instability, IMO; then again, the time may be fleeting. tough call.

as for the press, they have a lot of work to do, lots of catchup. i don't hold out too much hope for them to do their job. they really BELIEVE they are doing their job. too commercial nowadays.

RE: Preserving the Constitution

BWD:

If our foremost goal in preserving our way of life, liberty, and pursuit of happiness is not our objective, then I would propose that we have already lost.

The Constitution would not have been adopted if the Bill of Rights was not an integral part of that document. (The Bill of Rights was an essential part of the founding of our government.)

I'll fight and die for my country, the Constitution and the Bill of Rights.

But I'll be dead and damned before I fight for the pork barrel politics, special interests and international banking interests that wish to confuse patriotism with profit.

The "four freedoms" that Roosevelt espoused, and Norman Rockwell so eloquently protrayed, are the bedrock of our cause.

This isn't about political jingoism anymore, it's about the basic survival a representatinve republican form of government and the preservation of the Bill of Rights. (Which exists nowhere else on the planet at this time, and those God given rights are currently under assault from within and without.)

I agree that we are under attack from several different fronts. But if we are willing to sacrifice our freedoms, and our rights, for some chimera of security, then surely, we have already lost not just the battle, but the war.

Freedom cannot be confused with anarchy, but the sacrifice of freedom is not the cure for chaos.

It's the domestic political situation and not anthrax is precisely what I'm afraid of.

In our moment of fear and patriotic fervor what are we giving away in our quest for security?

Greybeard is right. IF the political front takes a turn towards the domestic (more than it already is) things are going to get really tense for a great many of us.

There's a great deal of manipulation of public opinion and politics happening here and it's happening on several fronts and it's coming from at least several different elements only one of which is Al Queda.

maybe we have, maybe we haven't. sure it is the foremost goal, but you think this incarnation of the 'free' press is up to the task?

i don't.

the resolve will come from elsewhere. i think. i hope.
