Kathy: I've been drying apple slices in my dehydrator... I know you said you don't have one now, but I have to tell you, a friend told me how she does hers and we're very pleased with it! As soon as I slice each apple, I dip the slices into a mixture of 1/2 C sugar & 2 teasp cinnamon and place on the racks for drying.
Try checking at a Goodwill near you or similar place for used dehydrators. I do have a neighbor who used her oven on its lowest setting with the door slightly propped open. Personally that wouldn't be my favorite way to do it, cause I wouldn't want the additional heat in the house this time of year. I've been wanting to make something with wooden frames and using screening to lay the food on... then let the sun take care of it. If you had enough screened frames made up, you could probably dry quite a few out in the sun.
OH! Another way is to lay them on cookie sheets and place them in the dash of a parked car sitting in the sun. I did talk to a gal who used that method and she said it made her car smell great, plus it worked. LOL. (I should try that just for fun and see how it works!)
