Prep Genrl Belated Weekly Prep Thread - December 26 ~ January 30, 2017

I apologize - between work, grandkids, and the holiday, I didn't have time to start this thread until now.

Do take a look at last week's thread; Ivan the Russian had an interesting post about trapping!

Got one grandson a set of walkie talkies for Christmas and discovered that they had quite the range lol! The boys spent some time talking with several folks in town (monitored, of course!) and daughter is working out a 'house channel'. I forsee some of their friends across town getting walkie talkies as presents during their upcoming birthday parties :) Good prep item, as well as lots of fun!

Hubby and I usually do not exchange gifts (maybe some ammo for birthdays, etc...) but this year the shop where he works got in a small Kawasaki Mule as a trade in, so he swapped an older bike he'd rebuilt for the Mule, and sent me a text with a photo and 'Merry Christmas!' I will get to go by the shop and visit it in a week or so; he's cleaning it up, doing some minor repairs and a tune up on it during his down time at work. I will be so happy not to have to hitch the trailer up to the lawn tractor to haul small loads of this or that across the farm :)

I'm off to a basketball tournament/cheer competition with daughter and the grands later this morning; with only one other quick stop planned at the thrift store to find a dress shirt for Hubby to wear to a wedding later this week - he has one dress shirt, but it is the same color as the bridesmaids dresses, so he will need a different one.

While I'm at the game, Hubby - who has the day off as well - will be going the other direction to take the ham his boss gave him for Christmas to his Mama, and to stop by the shop to work on the Mule a bit while no one is there to bug him. He'll stop on the way home to pick up some suet for my birds, plus a new 10 or 12 foot step ladder - we're getting to an age where teetering on the top of the ladder to do chores around the place has lost it's appeal - well, that; plus I break easily when I fall nowadays, so would rather have something a little more sturdy under me than our old ladders that are even older than me

We are supposed to get more snow on Friday and Saturday, so I need to go down to the basement storeroom and dig out the snow boots I bought on clearance last year for $5/pair - at that price, I bought an assortment of sizes so not only have them for all three grandkids, but also a new pair for ME as well! And best of all - the pair in my size are neon green, so they'll be able to find me if I end up head first in a snowbank

Hmmm.... somehow my coffee cup has turned up empty - guess that means it's time to grab a refill before I go find my purple sweatshirt and head out to warm up the van; it's 8*F BRRRRR!!

Take care all; have a wonderful week!

You'll love the mule, Renee. We have a Kubota and a mule - both are great little vehicles.

Spent Christmas lazing around - I didn't even get out of my pajamas. Today, I need to get some stuff done. Planning on getting some pineapple that the local store has on sale for 50c/can. I don't like how it starts to taste like aluminum/tin after it's stored that way, so I'll re-can it in glass. I need to can up more that I got in ks my last trip too, so I'll just make a day of it. I also need to get laundry and some cleaning done. We didn't decorate this year, so packing it away is something I DON'T have to do!

in regard to the tinny taste of the pineapple - the better companies are going to a solid type poly can liner instead of the old coating - Dole just might be at that stage - check out a can and see if they made the change ....

I just open the can, put it in a pint jar and waterbath for 15 minutes. I get a little extra juice, and 4 cans of crushed pineapple make 5 pints. This was Dole brand - the cans are not lined and they have pull tabs. In my experience, the pull tab cans go bad more quickly than normal ones. And, I"m not sure I've seen #10 cans of pineapple. I"m sure they have them, I just don't run across them. Even so, I"m not sure I'd beat 50c for 20 ounces.

It was a good Christmas here. Spent time with good friends and kept things somewhat quiet. Had to run a few errands today (return a pair of jeans to LL Bean by UPS drop off, pick up a prescription, run by the bank, etc) and stopped at the grocery store. Decided to take advantage of the bogo on Del Monte veggies and bought 8 more cans of green beans with potatoes (my favorite). Also bought 4 Christmas boxes of lifesavers (6 rolls to a box) for $1.25 each. That was the only after Christmas markdown purchase made. Can't beat lifesavers at 20 cents a roll.

Just four more nights at my job and the new year begins with a new job. Looking forward to 2018.

Wishing you all the best with your new job, Prudentwatcher!

Thanks for the tip on canning the pineapple, Moldy - I'm going to have to try that. I'd like to try turning some crushed pineapple into ice cream topping (which I use in a cookie recipe) as well - if I can pry myself away from the garden porn that has started to arrive in the mailbox, I will try canning some pineapple both ways; tropical fruits are one of the things I would really miss! Dumb kid trick story - when I turned 16 and got my driver's license, I became the Go-fer for the family (don't think Mama set foot in a store for at least 5 years after that!) and taking over the grocery shopping/meal planning/meal prep etc... was added to my (mostly outside) chore list. I found a fabulous sale on pineapple one day and bought around 20 cans - pretty sure we had pineapple with every meal for a month or so, to the point that none of us cared if we EVER saw pineapple again! Good thing we had other fruit available from the farm and gardens, but we sure did get tired of pineapple - and I learned to shop a little better for the needs of my family at the time. Mama was terrified of pressure canners/cookers and wouldn't use one on a bet, so it was water bath canning and freezing for us during my childhood; that made the home pantry look quite a bit different from the ones I keep now.

Yesterday's 12 hour shift turned into 15 so I wasn't able to stop to look for a shirt for Hubby on my way home so I may be making a quick trip to town today. I need to go to town anyway to drop off the tempered glass tablet protectors at daughter's; then run to the grocery store to snag a point cut corned beef brisket plus cabbage, stuff to make Hoppin' John, etc... to make my families traditional New Year's Day meal to carry in to work as that is where I will be on the holiday. (Just hope we have time to eat it - New Year's Eve partying combined with a Full Moon on New Year's Day does not bode well for spare minutes on the psych ward...) Didn't see much else in the ads that made me so much as blink, but that is good because I will be able to save my grocery money to take advantage of the mark downs on ham, etc.. that will hit after New Year's Day :)

Here in a bit, I need to weed out some baby toys to take with me as we head to the wedding this afternoon; we have a month old baby in the extended family again and my cousin (the Great Aunt who is doing some babysitting) put the word out for baby gear. A football shaped toybox will likely be going to her house as well, which will make room for the Lego table that is going to end up in my grandsons' room just as soon as it gets built.

No basketball game for Hubby and myself tonight; our team got beat last night in the round robin tournament so will be vying for 3rd place in their game, which is the same time as the wedding; if they'd won, we were going to skip the reception and head for the playoff game but no rush now (other than that edgy feeling both Hubby and I get from being in 'town' lol!)

Off to paw through Hubby's closet - again - to see if a wedding worthy shirt has somehow appeared before I head to town...

Take care all; have a safe weekend!

Hope you found something suitable, Renee - I know the struggle!

We spent the day butchering. Was able to clear about a dozen roosters, a couple egg-eating hens, and 3 turkeys out of the chicken house. A friend's son - he's 12 -came to help and thought butchering was the coolest thing ever. We also managed to empty out part of one the hog feeders. The hogs went to freezer camp, and the remaining chickens can use the feed (we don't plan on having hogs next year). Back in the house now - tomato soup and grilled cheese for supper.

give the 12yr old kid credit - if he didn't grow up skinning game and butchering livestock that sort of thing can be tough at first - most kids and many adults don't like handling raw meat that comes off a supermarket wrapped tray ....

That forest the construction company cut and turned into a pile of logs is getting smaller.

I promised the wife we would clean the house top to bottom. I moved all the appliances, furniture, to sweep mop and or vacuum. I cleaned the baseboards .

We're tossing old things, worn out, unused.

We're between tossing and having garage sale.

Everything is getting washed. The rugs shampooed is next.
