"The twisties" is nothing more than a buzz word for vertigo. Ya take your eye off the ball or point of reference and you don't know up from down. She might be past her prime, or maybe the meds she is taking or not taking. Bottom line is just aint as good as she used to be. Get over it.

"I know that this Olympic Games I want it to be for myself," she said, tearing up. "I came in and it felt like I was still doing it for other people, so that just hurts my heart that doing what I love has been kind of taken away from me to please other people." (copied from Simone Biles says gymnastics is not everything, 'we also have to focus on ourselves')

Wow that's weird. I thought there was no I in team. Nevertheless she probably made the right decisions, because her teammates did at least as well as she would have done based on what we saw. It was good that she gave up her spots to the extent possible for teammates.

I can believe there are "twisties" for a gymnast, but I've never seen an Olympic-level gymnast drop out of an event for that reason before. I'd think they'd do a bit more training and try to get their timing back. I've heard of gymnasts doing that during an event.

Everyone seems to have forgotten that she was told that she was going to be graded down for performing at her own level. Because her level is so much higher than that of her competitors. This would have translated to problems for the team possibly winning. And increased risk for her in the individual competition because she would be graded harshly if she performed lower than she is capable, yet not graded in comparison if she did fully perform.
She found a way to withdraw from team competition that would not hurt her team and would allow them to perform and be judged fairly for their abilities.
I'd honestly bet that she was going to continue in the individual events until the full risk to herself became apparent. Too many gymnasts have received lifelong severe injuries doing what she does. If they were not going to grade her fairly, she did not need to take that risk.
She didn't start this. The Olympic judges did when they told her that they would not judge her fairly. This was her last Olympics. I seriously doubt that she wanted to withdraw. The news no longer reports that part. They are reporting the mental health aspect. Unfortunately, I think that is going to ricochet on her and cause her problems later. I think she would have stuck with the injury story except that the Olympic doctors wouldn't have been able to verify one.
And who wouldn't have some mental issues with the idea of being the best in their field, having spent years/decades getting there, and then being told that they would be punished for all of those years of training and effort. I can tell you I would have walked out and told them to "eat $$$$."
So why not beat them at their own game and "dumb down" the routine? I guess I'm not understanding this. I'm old enough to remember Nadia Comaneci doing what had never been done before at the Olympics and getting 10's for doing it and succeeding.

Inner ear disturbances.........like CTE in football players limits the time a person can participate in such activities.....personally I see gymnastics for females as practically child abuse anyway.
She was taking Ritalin which was allowed for her because she reported being ADHD, even though it's normally a banned substance. That would also accelerate the termination of her growth spurt, and she ended up being tiny. That's a big advantage for being a jumping bean who can spin so easily.

I don't cry for her. She's set for life financially. A lot of people have problems in their childhoods and get nothing for it.

Where did you see that she was going to be punished and graded harder? Normally reigning champions that the judges know are graded a little easier. (Or a lot easier, in figure skating.) Someone has to clearly beat them to come out ahead.

Also judges tend to prefer athletes from their own or allied countries, in the politics of the sport. But other US athletes seem to have received fair judging and had good results in women's gymnastics.

Is this something Biles said herself, or how did you hear it?

more like.........Simian Biles the subhuman..............

Another Black athhleet.....that gets a pass for using their body instead of their mind in life.......

I have no respect for the athlete in society anymore...especially the dark ones.........go get a job.

This, and the other one that backed out of tennis something a few weeks ago makes me wonder if they're not superhuman, or subhuman. It makes me wonder if this is another example of a common genetic trait.

She's acting like a special needs student (with apologies to real special needs students)with this mental this and mental that. Same with that tennis player.

I've seen the same thing in business-folks of this persuasion "choke" when having to make big decisions or manage complex situations. Admittedly my observations are unscientific. But it's noticeable.

There have been a couple articles about it .. she was executing some super hard “moves” and the getting the same score as less hard moves When the judges were challenged on they said they were not rewarding for dangerous moves (can’t think of better word). Of course she continued to do the harder ones “ because she could do them”.
Hard to judge her a quitter when she clearly has years of not quitting to get her where she is. I can’t imagine that was an easy decision for her.

here is one article I found Opinion: Punishing Simone Biles for her greatness is act of foolishness by gymnastics officials

On Saturday night, Biles became the first woman to compete a Yurchenko double pike, a vault so difficult few men even attempt it. She is pushing the boundaries of her sport and, much like Michael Phelps’ quest for eight swimming gold medals in Beijing, Biles’ efforts to challenge the notion of what’s possible will be all the talk of the Tokyo Olympics.

Yet, based on guidance from the FIG, judges at the U.S. Classic gave her new vault a start value – the measure of its difficulty – of just 6.6 points.

This was in the press releases the day before she flubbed the landing and then stepped out. It disappeared very quickly to be overtaken by the new news story lines and hasn't been repeated since. Welcome to the news cycle. And geez, the mental health thing gets a lot more news play then the Olympic committee being jerks.

So why not beat them at their own game and "dumb down" the routine? I guess I'm not understanding this. I'm old enough to remember Nadia Comaneci doing what had never been done before at the Olympics and getting 10's for doing it and succeeding.

The basics were that they expected her to be top of her game and knock it out of the park in order to get good scores. But she wasn't allowed to dumb down the routines. None of them are allowed to do that. The routines are submitted in advance and if you don't perform the submitted routine, you lose points. This is an Olympic standard and I've seen people take heavy score hits for simplifying their routines. You can do something more difficult than you submitted, but not something simpler. And if you do something more difficult, you better nail it perfectly because they will roast you if you don't. Most competitors will actually submit routines that are hard but well within their skill level. And then add a new component if they feel they have the mastery and ability when the time comes. I'd bet gold that she submitted exactly what she planned on doing with all the super difficult maneuvers in there.

At the same time, her competitors were going to be judged as if she, and her skill level, did not exist. So they would receive similar or better scores for simpler routines.

There's a word for when they do this nonsense in schools. I forget what it is. But basically, those who excel are held to a higher standard and punished if they don't meet it, even if they still do much better than their competitors. Their competitors are held to a lower standard because it is not believed that they can achieve the higher standard. (If you've ever been in gifted classes, you've been through this.)

In this case, the Olympic committee had already made it clear that they knew she could do what had never been done before, but they were not going to reward her for it because it was "too dangerous" and other gymnasts might get injured trying to copy her.

It was her writing. She is a Super. Bestest, Numba One G.I. Fan so knows a lot more about this than I do. Same with Figure Skating [[FL actually has a nice collection of Medals and stuff from when she Figure Skated]] I did not even know the thread was still going until she emailed me about it She can read Main on her tablet. She emailed me more info and I brought it over-being as ****ing tired as I am from working outside for the last couple of months in the heat, I just skimmed it and pasted without giving it much thought. Figured it was more Simone Hero stuff.

Pride comes before the fall.....Pride month ended.
That bronze will leave a bitter taste for the rest of her life......she will always look back and think what could of been, had she not had an emotional breakdown...... at the end of the day, she will bank on it. PTSD and all it entails on the book trail and the talk show circuit.

Sigh... at the end of the day, I'm sure she wishes she had broken her ankle and had to withdraw. Because it probably would have hurt less than what people are slinging at her now.

Because unfortunately, mental illness is no more controllable than fractured bones. Our response (to a certain degree) is controllable, or at least manageable. But the chemical cascades that are part of the cause/effect cycle (I don't think the docs fully understand any of this, to be honest) are very real, and can be overwhelming to even the strongest mind.

This young woman sounds extremely sheltered. Reportedly, her mom has always traveled with her everywhere. Of course, I instantly wonder, "COVID has been going on for over 18 months; how have they avoided being separated until now?" Also; did it occur to NO ONE in her entourage that practicing being on her own at a minor meet or two might have been beneficial?

It's not just them, I can assure you! I've seen this utter lack of ability to even *think* about more than one potential outcome. Honestly, I've been very isolated for several year, and I'm truly appalled at the obvious dumbing down of our youth. It's truly frightening, because I'm seeing this in the context of the medical field, and it's not confines solely to the secretarial staff.

As just one example, the bride of a good friend of ours is a sweetheart. And she's got a degree based RN, plus a couple years experience in a doctor's office as the sole RN. (Apparently, she could become a Nurse Practitioner with 2 more years of school?!). Anyway, when I was helping them treat a calf with severe pressure necrosis of the leg due to a 6 hour long calving ordeal, I discovered she didn't know "cc's" and "ml's" were equal. And she was afraid to give a cow a shot, "because it might hurt her"!

Like I said, I like her-shes a hard worker, and eager to learn. But she doesn't begin to comprehend just how much she doesn't know! (Thankfully, working in a pediatrician's office, she's not likely to endanger anyone) But the idea that she's a graduate, licensed RN is terrifying in the implications. I'd assess her knowledge level as somewhere around a dedicated LPN... one who cared and paid attention on the job, rather than just doing her job. But the idea of people at her skill level being hired to work critical care in a hospital is terrifying!

But, in the end, Miss Biles probably cost herself her self-endowed G.O.A.T award. Got very close to plain old goat status in the eyes of many, but I do think that's unfair. She still is one of the most powerful, talented athletes in her discipline, in history. She actually seems to be possibly one woman who could compete with the men on an even basis- but thankfully, we've never heard her whining about that! And while I have no idea about her habits, I'm absolutely certain you don't get that good or that strong without self discipline,, being nearly impervious to pain, and a schedule to which few here would EVER willingly subject themselves.

She reached for the highest of the stars but came up short. Her response in the next few months and years will shape my opinion of her. If she shakes it off, addresses it politely for a week or two, but then DROPS IT, good for her.

But if every time her career is brought up, she (or her proxies) start a "oh, so sad, so unfair! I was the best of all time, but they screwed me with their stupid COVID rules"... well, regardless that I agree with thev" stupid COVID rules part,, they we're the same rules for everyone!

But her young teammates got their chance in the spotlight, and they shone brightly, indeed. She *could* choose to highlight that... graciousness hasn't gone out of style completely yet!

I'll wait and see.

She won Bronze on the Beams in 2016. As others or ST anyway, said her dropping gave the others girls-none of whom have Taken a Knee or any such shit, to take home some Medals. Maybe that's why she did it-threw herself on her sword for the others.

If I was taking home Medal after Medal and seeing my Bros happy for me but knowing they were going home emprt-handed, I'd toss it too for them.

Saw all her woke tweets on a website about how much she loves BLM and so forth. How badly blacks are treated. Blah.blah.
She and this team are as woke as the soccer team.
Delighted ended this way. Karma is a bitch.
