Apocalypse Warning

In July, I highlighted how a total solar eclipse may be a portent of the Apocalypse. Meanwhile, as I've also paid close attention to in this blog, long-wave patterns in stock prices and mass mood are on the verge of turning down again into what may be the collapse of Western Civilization. Now I'm starting to discern the geopolitical ingredients for the realization of the apocalyptic vision I experienced 18 years ago.

Today, Hezbollah's deputy secretary-general, Sheikh Naim Qassem, said Hezbollah would avenge the 'assassination' of Imad Mughniyeh that the terrorist organization attributes to Israel (although there is substantial reason to suspect otherwise). In so doing, Hezbollah is making an 'in your face' threat against Israel that could be a harbinger of a new Arab-Israeli war which, in turn, could have catastrophic consequences for the entire world.

In recent weeks a war of words erupted between Israel and Lebanon. Although the source of tension was unclear, there were signs it had to do with intelligence Israel received regarding an imminent threat of some sort from Hezbollah:

The war of words between Israel and the Lebanese resistance movement Hizbullah has heated up in the last week, raising fears that another war between Lebanon and Israel is imminent. On Monday Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu warned the Lebanese government that it would be held responsible for any attacks on Israeli targets even if the attacks were carried out independently by the group.

“The government of Lebanon cannot just say ‘that’s Hizbullah,’ and hide behind them,” Netan*yahu was reported in the Israeli daily Haaretz as saying. “The government of Lebanon is in power and responsible.” (The Daily Star, 8/13/09)

With regard to a threat from Hezbollah, Israel has been keeping a close eye on Latin America as the potential site for a terrorist attack purportedly to avenge the death of Imad Mugniyeh:

Threats have been volleyed back and forth between Hezbollah and Israel recently. Senior Israeli officials warned that if the organization makes an attempt to attack Israeli targets, the response will be unforgiving. Hezbollah responded in kind with a threat of its own that if Israel were to attack Lebanon, the Jewish State will pay a heavy price.

It has recently been made clear that Israel's public warnings on the issue stem from intelligence assessments that Hezbollah is investing significant efforts to carry out terrorist attacks against Israeli targets and Jewish institutions in Brazil, Argentina, Uruguay, Paraguay, and Peru in a bid to avenge the death of the organization's late leader Imad Mughniyeh, who was assassinated in Damascus more than a year ago.

According to the Israeli source, Hezbollah operatives in South America are collecting intelligence to this end. The Israeli intelligence community estimates that Hezbollah will try as much as possible not to leave identifying footprints that could associate the organization with the attack in the wake of such a strike in a bid to avoid Israel's heavy hand. In the same vein, it is estimated that the organization will not take public responsibility for a terrorist attack if it were to carry one out successfully.

This is also the reason the organization is purportedly looking to carry out an attack far away from Israel.

Egypt has recently exposed cluster of secret Hezbollah-related terrorist cells that planned on assassinated Israeli Ambassador to Egypt Shalom Cohen. Another cell that planned on targeting Israeli tourists was discovered in Jordan. On this backdrop, Deputy Foreign Minister Danny Ayalon warned that should Hezbollah attack Israeli targets anywhere around the globe, harsh retaliation will ensue.

During his visit to South America a few weeks ago, Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman handed over information to his Latin counterparts on Hezbollah's activities in the countries he visited. According to the Israeli source, the main objective is to signal to Hezbollah that Israel is aware of the organization's subversive activities in South America and is keeping close watch.

"We sought to deter them and to say to them that the Israeli response will be difficult to bear should they try to take action against Israelis anywhere," warned the source. (Ynet News, 8/13/09; Also see "Waiting For Orders", Ynet News, 8/14/09)

Thus, there is clearly something up between Israel and Hezbollah likely related to intelligence of an upcoming terrorist attack against Jewish interests in Latin America. Note that this has occurred twice before:

The two largest terrorist attacks in Latin American history were conducted by Hizballah against Jewish interests in Buenos Aires. Argentina's Israeli Embassy in Buenos Aires was the sight of the first explosion, a car bomb, on Mar. 17, 1992. The bomb killed 29 and injured over 250. On Jul. 18, 1994, the AMIA Jewish community center in Buenos Aires was bombed; 87 people were killed, and over 100 injured. While the two cases, which are thought to be related, have been officially under investigation for over thirteen years, little progress has been made, and the responsible parties have not yet been apprehended. (The Examiner, 8/14/09)

Should another such attack occur, it appears Israel will target not just Hezbollah, but Lebanon as a proxy state for the the terrorist organization....which, in turn, means Iran, since Tehran is the puppet-master behind the Shiite Moslem terrorist organization:

There is no better place to understand Iranian strategy than the Laleh Park in central Tehran, where young and old gather most afternoons to engage in an ancient form of combat.

Chess has helped sharpen the Persian mind for centuries and may explain how today’s regime is plotting its next move to become a superpower.

Some time over the coming two to three years, Iran will be able to build its first nuclear weapon, granting it membership of the world’s most elite club and putting it on par with Israel as the dominant forces in the Middle East.

If diplomatic efforts fail to halt Tehran, then there is only one last obstacle — the open threat by Israel to destroy Tehran’s nuclear sites before it can complete an atomic weapon.

Israel has the political will and the military muscle to execute an attack against Iran’s nuclear facilities. The range may be beyond anything attempted by the Israeli Air Force, but Iran’s conventional forces are outdated and defences weak. It is assumed that Arab states, whose airspace Israeli bombers and fighters would have to fly through to reach Iran, would secretly cooperate on a mission to blunt the Persian threat.

That is why Tehran is investing so heavily in its Lebanese proxy Hezbollah. The Shia Muslim militia has rebuilt and strengthened its arsenal since the bloody war it fought with the Israelis in 2006. It has amassed tens of thousands of rockets and missiles capable of bombarding half the country.

Israeli planners have no doubt that should they make the fateful decision to attack Iran, they will provoke massive retaliation on an unprecedented scale. The most densely populated areas of the country would come under Hezbollah range, including Tel Aviv, Haifa and Ben Gurion, Israel’s only international airport.

Israel may be able to take Iran’s queen. But in the process it could put itself into check. (UK Times, 8/5/09)

My 1991 vision of the Apocalypse started with seeing a special report of a chemical missile attack on Haifa, Israel.

Is this what is about to occur?

Lebanese fears of Israeli strike swell
Published: Aug. 20, 2009 at 12:18 PM

BEIRUT, Lebanon, Aug. 20 (UPI) -- Reports that Israel has ordered 100 "bunker buster" bombs from the United States has caused tremors of concern in Lebanon that the weapons are for use against Hezbollah in the event of war between Iran and the Jewish state.

The Jerusalem Post reported Aug. 3 that the Israeli Defense Ministry ordered the laser-guided Joint Direct Attack Munition kits earlier this summer.

The kits are fitted onto conventional bombs to transform them into precision-guided weapons that are highly accurate and capable of destroying bunkers built deep underground.

Since Hezbollah's 2006 war with Israel, the Iranian-backed Shiite movement has rebuilt an elaborate network of bunkers in South Lebanon and constructed a whole new defensive line north of the Litani River.

These include command-and-control centers, arms dumps and underground launch sites for an estimated 20,000 rockets the Israelis claim Hezbollah has deployed in the south.

The Jerusalem Post cited no delivery date for the LJDAMs, but the order was reported amid growing concerns that Israel may launch a unilateral strike against Iran to knock out its nuclear program infrastructure.

U.S. leaders have cautioned in recent weeks that the Obama administration still retains its options for a military strike of its own.

U.S. efforts to open a dialogue with Tehran on the nuclear issue appear to have been stymied by the political turmoil gripping Iran following the disputed re-election of firebrand President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad June 12 and the growing power of the Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps, a key Ahmadinejad ally that controls Iran's nuclear and missile programs.

American forces in Iraq and Afghanistan have found the LJDAM's guidance system -- combining GPS systems and lasers, frequently used by ground troops to designate targets for strike aircraft -- is particularly effective against moving targets.

"Given that most of the targets that Israeli intelligence would be able to pinpoint in Iran would be fixed, the LJDAM seems most appropriate for a South Lebanon scenario targeting Hezbollah fighters and Revolutionary Guards officers operating in Lebanon," according to the Texas-based Strategic Forecasting security consultancy.

It noted the Israelis used earlier versions of the JDAM "in South Lebanon in 2006 and then in Gaza in 2009 … for targeting everything from Hezbollah safe houses in downtown Beirut to smuggling tunnels along the Gaza border with Egypt."

Hezbollah would be a key target for Israel if hostilities erupt with Iran because Tehran would be expected to activate it to retaliate against the Jewish state.

Hezbollah's main weapon would be the estimated 40,000 rockets it is believed to have amassed since 2006. These include long-range weapons deployed in northwest Lebanon capable of hitting deep inside Israel.

Palestinian Hamas militants in the Gaza Strip on Israel's southern border, who are also aided by Tehran, would likely open up too.

Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah has threatened to bombard Tel Aviv if the Israelis bomb Beirut's southern suburbs, a Hezbollah stronghold. The area was pounded daily by Israeli air raids throughout the 2006 conflict. Tel Aviv was never hit.

There have been no significant clashes between Hezbollah and Israel since that conflict ended. But there have been constant provocations. Israeli jets violate Lebanese airspace almost daily, and troops recently extended border fortifications.

On July 14 a Hezbollah arms dump hidden in the basement of a house in the border village of Khirbet Silim blew up. Israel charged that the dump was only one of around 100 violating U.N. Security Resolution 1701, which ended hostilities in 2006.

According to security sources in Beirut, Israel had tipped off the U.N. peacekeeping force in South Lebanon about the cache and demanded it destroy the dump.

Lebanese concerns have heightened with the breaking up of some 15 Israeli spy cells across the country. Some 40 people have been indicted for espionage.

The extent of the elaborate network and the scale of its operations, assassinations and gathering intelligence on Hezbollah have stunned the nation. The suspects, Muslims and Christians, include a former brigadier general in Lebanon's leading security service and three army colonels.

According to security authorities, some agents had identified targets that were attacked in 2006 and were supposedly pinpointing new ones to be hit if hostilities resume.

In anticipating the blowback from Hezbollah in the event of strikes against Iran, Strategic Forecasting noted that "Israel would have a strong interest in degrading Hezbollah's military capabilities prior to attacking Iran."

Gingrich Says World War III Has Begun

http://archive.newsmax.com/archives/ic/2006/7/16/155736.shtml

World War III has begun, and the nation’s leadership is failing to deal with this reality, former House of Representatives Speaker Newt Gingrich concludes.

Appearing on NBC’s "Meet the Press" with Tim Russert Sunday, Gingrich explained that "today is not the fifth day of the war, it’s the 58th year of the effort by those who want to destroy Israel. As Ahmadinejad, the head of Iran, says, he wants to defeat the Americans and eliminate Israel from the face of the earth. So we should not see this event in isolation. There is an . . . Iran/Syria, Hezbollah and Hamas alliance trying to destroy Israel.”

"The Israelis withdrew from Gaza to create the circumstance of peace. The Israelis withdrew from south Lebanon to create the circumstance of peace,” Gingrich continued. "They now have a thousand missiles fired from Gaza, they’ve had hundreds of missiles fired from south Lebanon. You clearly have Iranian involvement. There are at least 400 Iranian guards in south Lebanon. Apparently it was an Iranian missile fired by Iranians which hit an Israeli warship yesterday. The United States should be saying to Syria and Iran, 'South Lebanon is going to be cleared out. We are for Israel and the Lebanese government breaking the back of Hezbollah, getting rid of all 10,000 to 13,000 missiles, and we will decisively stop any effort by Syria and Iran to intervene.'”

Gingrich says the current crisis facing Israel is part of a larger world war that involved the United States.

"I mean, this is absolutely a question of the survival of Israel, but it’s also a question of what is really a world war,” Gingrich said.

He then cited a litany of events that confirm this conclusion.

"North Korea firing missiles. We say there’ll be consequences, there are none. North Koreans fire seven missiles on our Fourth of July; bombs going off in Mumbai, India; a war in Afghanistan with sanctuaries in Pakistan . . . the Iran/Syria/Hamas/Hezbollah alliance.”

In addition, he said "there is the war in Iraq funded largely from Saudi Arabia and supplied largely from Syria and Iran.”

Other evidence of the war, Gingrich argues, includes:

# The British home secretary saying that there are 20 terrorist groups with 1,200 terrorists in Britain.

# Seven people in Miami videotaped pledging allegiance to al-Qaida.

# Eighteen people in Canada being picked up with twice the explosives that were used in Oklahoma City, with an explicit threat to bomb the Canadian parliament, and saying they’d like to behead the Canadian prime minister.

# In New York City, reports that in three different countries people were plotting to destroy the tunnels of New York.

Gingrich explained: "We are in the early stages of what I would describe as the third world war, and frankly, our bureaucracies aren’t responding fast enough. We don’t have the right attitude about this . . . And frankly, the Israelis have every right to insist that every single missile leave south Lebanon and that the United States ought to be helping the Lebanese government have the strength to eliminate Hezbollah as a military force, not as a political force in the parliament, but as a military force in south Lebanon.”

Asked host Tim Russert "This is World War III?”

"I believe if you take all the countries I just listed, that you’ve been covering, put them on a map, look at all the different connectivity, you’d have to say to yourself this is, in fact, World War III,” Gingrich said.

Israeli attack on Lebanon - Prelude to World War III
July 23rd, 2006 by Kashif Aziz ( 1,632 Views )

It’s been termed as a war of proxies. With Israel getting support from United States and Lebanon being added by Syria, Iran (and persumably China), the attack of Israel on Lebanon may be a prelude to World War III.

According to a New York Times report, the Bush administration is rushing a delivery of precision-guided bombs to Israel, which requested the expedited shipment last week after beginning its air campaign against Hezbollah targets in Lebanon.

The new American arms shipment to Israel has not been announced publicly, and the officials who described the administration’s decision to rush the munitions to Israel would discuss it only after being promised anonymity. The officials included employees of two government agencies, and one described the shipment as just one example of a broad array of armaments that the United States has long provided Israel.

One American official said the shipment should not be compared to the kind of an “emergency resupply of dwindling Israeli stockpiles that was provided during the 1973 Arab-Israeli war, when an American military airlift helped Israel recover from early Arab victories.

On the other hand, Syria and Iran are perceived to stand behind Lebanon, with support from China, as analyzed by NubianObserver:

The Hizhbollah missile attacks on northern Israel cities had demonstrated to the world that Israel is defenseless against a massive nuclear or non-nuclear missile attacks. Even with an Arrow Patriot antimissile system, Israel would be overwhelmed by the numbers of missiles attacking its cities. To protect Israel against such a serious missile attack would cost tens of billions of dollar and would bankrupt the Israeli national economy.

The massive killing by the Israeli army of old people, women and children with US weapons of mass destructuction made in the US, is costing Israeli the respect and political support of a critical element of American political culture for Israel new need for advanced US antimissile systems. Given the massive unemployment in the US, Americans are not willing or able to foot the bill for Israel antimissile defensive needs.

A movement by Israel back into southern Lebannon will increase the pressure on China to increase its aid to Iran. The most problemic aspect of the China aid, is ICBM and cruise missile for the Iranian submarine warfare.

This over reaction by Israel to military move back into Lebanon is playing directly into the China hands and plans for gaining Iran’s. China hard pressed for oil, is quietly transferring critical missile technologies and manufacturing capacities to build longer range missiles to Iran and Syria exchange for oil. This will increase the risk to Israeli cities.

In order to protect Israeli cities from missile attack, the US Space Command would have to allow Israel access to its antimissile detection grid and advanced space-based counter measures. This will force the Chinese to up grade the missiles they provide Iran.

Israel is being surrounded by a ring of countries able to launch cheap, non-nuclear missiles into high-valued urban targets and cities. Turning southern Lebanon into a DMZ is only the answer for the short range Hizhbollah missiles. The longer ranges Chinese missiles coming to Iran, when placed on mobile launch platform, will be very to difficult, for even Israel Air Force to find and destroy. Israel will be force out of necessity to into attacking Syria and Iran missile production facilities in ordered to reduce the risk of too many missiles being deployed.
