AOC says proposed $1B budget cut to NYPD isn't enough: 'Defunding police means defunding police’

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y., weighed in Tuesday on the proposed New York City budget cuts to the police department she said don't go far enough, saying “defunding police means defunding police.”

“Defunding police means defunding police. It does not mean budget tricks or funny math. It does not mean moving school police officers from the NYPD budget to the Department of Education’s budget so the exact same police remain in schools,” the congresswoman said in a statement.

Establishment Democrats and progressives have debated over what “defund the police” actually means. Some argue the phrase shouldn’t be taken literally and just stands to represent police reforms.

“It does not mean counting overtime cuts as cuts, even as NYPD ignores every attempt by City Council to curb overtime spending and overspends on overtime anyways,” Ocasio-Cortez continued. “If these reports are accurate, then these proposed ‘cuts’ to the NYPD budget are a disingenuous illusion. This is not a victory. The fight to defund policing continues.”

The New York City Council and Mayor Bill de Blasio reached a deal Tuesday to cut $1 billion from the NYPD’s $6 billion budget.

According to the Gotham Gazette report Ocasio-Cortez was referring to, the agreement would reduce the number of officers in the city by canceling its July class of 1,163 cadets. It also includes $350 million in cuts to overtime pay and and various other expenses such as travel enforcement and vehicle purchases.

The new budget will shift school safety and school crossing guards out of the NYPD’s jurisdiction to account for $483 million total, according to the Gazette.

That $1 billion would go instead to education, social services in communities hit hard by the virus, and summer youth programming for over 100,000 young people.

Cuts are also coming for the NYPD’s capital budget, such as canceling plans to build a new precinct in Jamaica, Queens, and instead, building a community center. The city is also planning to shift some police capital funding to install broadband internet in public housing complexes.

The liberal mayor flaunted the budget, which must be passed by midnight Wednesday as real action on a call for justice.

“We’re acting on that call for justice. I believe it is our mission to redistribute resources to those who need them the most,” the mayor said. “This is real redistribution.”

Activists siding with AOC have said they won't accept any plan that merely shifts money around without making what they see as meaningful changes.

“No funny math. No budget musical chairs,” relatives of more than a dozen people killed by NYPD officers said in a letter Tuesday to the mayor and council. “We’ll know if you fought for our communities or whether you will let the NYPD continue to be treated as if they’re above the law, even in the budget.”

Public Advocate Jumaani Williams held a Zoom call to talk about plans to potentially block the budget.

"If we have a hiring freeze for every single city agency, that should include the NYPD," he said, according to ABC7 NY. "There's no reason why we're not hiring additional guidance counselors. We're not hiring additional nurses. We're not hiring additional homeless outreach workers across the city."

President of the Police Benevolent Association Pat Lynch wasn’t happy with the budget either.

"Shootings more than doubled again last week," he said in a statement. "Even right now, the NYPD doesn't have enough manpower to shift cops to one neighborhood without making another neighborhood less safe. We will say it again: the mayor and the City Council have surrendered the city to lawlessness. Things won't improve until New Yorkers hold them responsible."

The discussion comes as the city is grappling with what de Blasio has pegged at a $9 billion revenue loss because of coronavirus.

The city’s budget totaled $93 billion when passed last June, but this year’s proposed budget sits at $88.1 billion.

How the <bleep> did she get re-elected, anyway? Can anyone be dumb enough to fall for this nonsense? I refuse to believe it was anything other than election fraud. 70%? No way. Portent of things to come...

They will destroy NYC as the violence overwhelms them. Imagine the level of chaos over the next 6 months. A cut of some 1200 in July, the great withering away, plus retirements, officers quitting. The 35,000 NYPD strength is likely 3500 short now, plus the 1200 cadets. What contempt the people of NYC have for their police. The 1200 cadets have sacrificed for a year or two or three, and then they just dump them, don't even graduate them, or have a ceremony?May the vile city full of demons suffer the wrath they so richly deserve. Let the demons run wild and the streets flow with blood. A people this EVIL deserve every thing that will now happen to them.

The left doesn't want to do away with police, it merely wants to do away with the current police. Once the blue line is off the street, there is nothing to oppose their brownshirts who will immediately be out in force. The city won't be chaos, it will simply be left-controlled tyranny.

Trump should offer to endorse this view if she can de-fund the US Capitol Police.

In fact AOC could propose this since the administration of the Capitol Police is overseen by Congress

Payroll administration for the Capitol Police and civilian support personnel of the Capitol Police shall be carried out on a unified basis by a single disbursing authority. The Capitol Police Board, with the approval of the Committee on House Oversight of the House of Representatives and the Committee on Rules and Administration of the Senate, acting jointly, shall, by contract or otherwise, provide for such unified payroll administration.
Good for the Gander.

Will be hard to lose the Constitutional Documents/Library of Congress, who fall in this jurisdiction.

But, hay, a new broom sweeps the stall clean. Power to the humans!

AOC is really a simple minded bi*ch. She hasn't the brains to get in from a shower of piss (as my Dad used to say).

Her family background has them relocating to the US because they didn't like where they came from in PR............

............and her ideas of what to do in the US will end up replication where her family wanted to leave.

.....her family should have just stayed put and she could have had what she wanted without working at it.

Finally not a lurker!
Well, she has at least learned of budget trickery. I'm reminded of, I think. the 1880s when the USN got four new cruisers under the guise of "a great repair " to older vessels.
