Anyone change their ketchup decisions lately?

I have to wonder how the presidential campaign is treating the Heinz products.

DH and I went to the grocery store yesterday and needed Ketchup (which seems to be the new spelling for Catsup, but don't get me started).

Anyway, I reached for Heinz because it was cheaper (by about fifteen cents), put it in the cart and thought, "no, I don't like her", put it back and got the Hunts.

Has anyone else either bought or not bought a Heinz product based on their feelings about Teresa or the Kerry campaign?

Nope. I always buy whatever is cheapest, regardless of brand. I'm too poor to play politics at the grocer store.

I don't buy much ketchup..mostly cuz I know how it's made and what it's made from. You don't wanna know! But among brands heinz is the worst tasting most watered down of the bunch.

----OT alert-----
FYI: in the tomato canning processes, whole-peeled is the freshest, ripest level. The full ripeness quality you can get from your garden. Sliced is next level quality (over ripe, bruised) down..then diced..sauce..puree..paste. Ketchup is the very last. Calling it floor-sweepings is being generous..your garbage can would reject it. [hmmm...maybe this part wasn't too far OT LOL]

Try this. An 12-15oz can of diced, sliced or whole tomatoes, a tblsp or two of sugar (brown is yummy), a tblsp of worchestershire or soy sauce, a tblspoon of apple vinegar, a pinch of finely ground ginger or cummin..blend to mush. Strain seeds if necessary.

Same recipe for pizza/pasta sauce..just add garlic, oregano and other fav eyetie herbs.

Anyway after all blended, heat to almost boiling, simmer (stirring to avoid carmalizing) for 5-10min..no longer or the tomato breaks down to juice. Pull it off if ya see that happening. Thicken slightly during the simmer if necesary with corn starch to pour preference (go easy..cooling thickens). Spice with jalapeno sauce or other hotstuff to taste if ya like at this point. Now the last trick for enhanced taste..refridge over night to let the flavors finish mingling. If ya decide it's not sweet enough at this point, a little corn syrup blends in easily.

You'll never look at ketchup the same way again.

Has good shelf life in a 35F fridge. I've never tried to hot can it.

A co-worker said there's only Hunt's in my house. I said, "like H.L. Hunt?" and he didn't know who I was talking about. For shame!
