It was a missile defense test done by the Iranians. Or so they say. (ie: would they admit it was something else if it was something else? in today's tech world with videos popping up all over social media, they can't deny it happened, so they have to say something; it probably was what they say but a healthy dose of skeptiscm never hurt anyone...)

(fair use applies)

Iran's Army Says Air-Defense 'Test' Behind Blast Over Nuclear City Of Natanz
December 04, 2021 18:59 GMT
By RFE/RL

Iranian state television has said the country's military fired a missile to test air defenses over Natanz, a city that houses nuclear sites.

The announcement came after unconfirmed local reports on December 4 of a blast in the sky above the city, in central Iran, about 200 kilometers from the capital, Tehran.

"Iran's air-defense units fire missile to test [the] rapid-reaction force over Natanz city," read a bulletin on Press-TV, Iran's English-language international broadcaster.

Natanz hosts an underground center for centrifuges that enrich uranium, which is at the center of Western allegations of secret military nuclear activities.

"Such exercises are carried out in a completely secure environment...and there is no cause for concern," army spokesman Shahin Taqikhani told state TV, according to Reuters.

AFP quoted a spokesman as saying, "An hour ago, one of our missile systems in the region was tested to assess the state of readiness on the ground, and there is nothing to fear."

The army was responding after widespread concern from locals who witnessed the unexplained blast.

No drills or exercises had been announced prior to the incident.

"Local sources have reported hearing a large explosion in the Natanz sky," the ISNA news agency said earlier on December 4. "No official source has yet confirmed or denied the report."

The semiofficial Fars news agency quoted a reporter in a nearby city as saying an intense light had been seen and a blast rang out.

"No exact details are available about this," Fars quoted a local governor as saying, according to Reuters.

Later, Press-TV published a breaking story that said simply that "Iran’s air defense force" had confirmed the "test."

Iran blamed Israel for what it called an attack on Natanz when a power cutoff caused a blackout at the facility in April.

Multiple incidents at Iranian nuclear and scientific facilities and assassinations of leading nuclear scientists have been blamed by Iranian officials on Israel or the West.

A seventh round of international talks in Vienna aimed at reviving a 2015 nuclear deal between Iran and world powers including the United States ended on December 3 with talk of new setbacks.

Israel has threatened to take military action if diplomatic efforts to prevent Iran from acquiring a nuclear weapons capability fail.

Iran has consistently rejected accusations it is developing nuclear weapons and says its atomic activities are for civilian aims, despite findings by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) that Tehran previously obfuscated and deceived over its nuclear activities.

Secretary-General Rafael Grossi warned after a trip to Tehran last month that time was running out for the IAEA to gain access to reinstall cameras at a workshop in Iran that makes parts for advanced centrifuges, saying its inspectors would soon be unable to "guarantee" equipment there was not being diverted to a potential secret nuclear program.

There are some analysis, tweets and articles re: this latest incident on the Persian Gulf thread as well that some may wish to review.

Amir has been saying, all week, that Israel was going to have to step things up. I guess they're finally getting moving.

I'm curious how they're going to crack those plants that are dug into the mountains without going Nuclear. Cyber Attacks can only do so much.

FWIW, Amir posts a lot more stuff via Telegram since most of the Antisemitic Social Media platforms started scrubbing his posts. I kinda find it ironic since Telegram is UAE based.

SINCE THE IRANIANS TOOK DOWN THE INTERNET IN THE ENTIRE REGION, WE WON’T HAVE AND MORE INFORMATION SOON.

The event in Natanaz

There are many reports from different areas within the radius of the facility in the Natanz about a pungent odor carried in the air.

OP & Admin: Should we post stuff related to this event in this thread or one of the larger threads?

The larger thread serves as a general archive, but sometimes "little" stuff like this can get buried.

Also, is there a preferred method to cite Amir's posts from Telegram? I can do the standard share the link and copy text if that's preferred.

Wonder whose drone they were trying to take out-American, Israeli or Saudi.
The Joebama administration wouldn't move against Iran, so I doubt it was us, I doubt the Saudi's would do this... they can hardly handle the problems in Yemen... so... ready for spicey times?

Let's keep posts about this event here, at least while it's "breaking" and fluid.

As far as Tekegram posts, if thrybcan be deleted after the fact by either the OP or Telegram, it's best to copy an paste the relevant text. It's actually pretty shocking how many Twitter links are dead and gone within a few days or weeks. It's a shame , because it makes some of our historical threads much less useful.

As far as I know, they can be deleted so I'll make a point to copy the text.

My bets are on the Israelis. The Iranians have been pretty clear and brazen about their goals during the Vienna Conference this week. Israel has the most to lose and the rest of the world doesn't care. I expect a lot of stuff is going to happen over the next months as they try all options to cripple the project. Since the facility is all but the definition of "hardened target" I'm curious to see how far they go.

If things start to kick off elsewhere, like China and or Russia, I would think they'd get more aggressive as the chaos ensues.

I'm not a member of Telegraph so can't see posts unless I hit 'preview' channel. This is what I found on Amir's channel tonight. There's a video on the channel and then a link to a video on youtube, which I will copy over.

Amir Tsarfati

An interesting report, from sources affiliated with the Iranian opposition, tells, tonight, about the evacuations of the two villages of Sojq-Abad and Ahmad-Abad near the Natanz nuclear site.

There are many reports from different areas within the radius of the facility in the Natanz about a pungent odor carried in the air.

The telephone network fell in the area.
Iran has deliberately toppled the communications systems to prevent information from being extracted from the region.

If something did happen, the radiation levels in other countries will tell the story that the Iranians might not want to tell.

Spy satellites over the area probably have already shown various governments just what happened. Whether they decide to share that information is doubtful. With all the spy in the sky stuff, you probably can't walk your dog without some devise seeing it.

Iran's cover story about testing a drone shoot down system is so full of BS that it can't pass any sniff test. First, they would not do it over their nuclear production site and second, it shook buildings 100 miles away. The LAST think you want to happen around spinning centrifuges is any shaking. The last ones that got "Shook" are still interned in a glass mountain.

They tested some earth penetrating weapons at a range where I do a little contracting. One might opine that structures strongly resembling those found "elsewhere" were built, buried and "Tested"......

The structures were found wanting.

I'm guessing that the recent incident was mostly Cyber. Taking down the grid would be a good way to isolate the site, especially considering how much damage Stuxnet did last time. If it was anything similar to Stuxnet than the site is already infected and taking the area dark could limit "damage assessment" via phone home routines. If I remember correctly, the site has limited remote access anyway.

If physical damage can be done to the site itself it would be a greater setback, but being buried in a mountain is going to make that difficult. Fuel air explosive maybe?

I think desertvet2 is referring to a physical attack on the nuclear facility by someone with hostile intent.

Let me rephrase that as someone who attacks something obviously has a hostile intent. It's possible someone bombed the nuclear facility and hit pay dirt.

Yeah, but that's a lot of rock to penetrate.
Exactly why you test it in the correct environment first.....

Thermal drone view of another test (small 5Lb VBIED in box truck) at same range (Unrelated, not classified), screen shot from my phone. The reinforced concrete wall at the bottom left is about 12 feet high and 16 feet long.

We will know soon enough if a retaliation hits Israel. They will get blamed regardless of whether it was them or not. This is how war's start.
