Prep Genrl Amazon returned two huge Keystone GB orders today due to “damage!!”

I got a notification from Amazon that 2 of my very large orders of Keystone ground beef were damaged when they arrived at a Kentucky distribution center and they were returning them to the shipper and issuing me a refund. I don’t want a refund! I want them replaced! What the heck? They were on a huge sale. Isn’t this strange? I’m trying to contact the seller and Amazon to get this fixed but it’s impossible to get through! I have two other orders that are supposed to be delivered Sunday or Monday. Now, the prices have gone back up again! :bhd: :o267F5326-49AC-41C6-A7E6-DAD2647B2C0B.jpeg3C2FCF59-8E97-4232-A9A4-BC9047B075A4.jpeg

Wow. Sorry to hear that.

Can I ask what price you were able to them at on sale?

Maybe consider buying them directly from Keystone?

had the same thing happen to me last month with an order of laundry detergent and fabric softener. Same distribution center too. I was annoyed and just went and bought what I needed local since by the time I had waited I needed it. Didn't realize I had run low.

$14.48 for 28 oz cans!! They’ve cost well over &20 for a very long time. I think someone here or on a Prepper channel, someone said they were on sale. I bought….. a lot. It’s bizarre that they arrive in Kentucky and suddenly they are all damaged and I get a refund not a replacement. They didn’t even give me the option. Now the cans are back over $20

I thought I had purchased 4 separate orders from Keystone’s Amazon store. Turns out that only one I ordered was through their store. I just was NOT paying attention. It was pretty late when I ordered them and saw prices and ordered. I really screwed it up.

Out of curiosity I looked it up on Amazon and looked at the reviews. A few complaints of bulging cans after a short while. You might have gotten a blessing instead by getting a refund.
Well… there you go. Maybe that’s exactly what has been happening. Thank you for the heads up. We’re just trying to get our hands on as much protein as possible. I don’t have time to cook then can.

Day by day
You might want to check out Pleasant Hill Grains. They're showing 28oz cans of Keystone Ground Beef at a price of $163.00 for a case of 12. If I did the math right, that's $13.58 a can. They do charge shipping, though, of I think $10.99, but most definitely check that out. (ETA, the smaller cans are out of stock)

Direct from Keystone shows stock on their canned ground beef in 14oz and 28oz cans. Shipping is extra. Even with shipping, this looks cheaper than the "sale" price.

Edit: their canned beef, chicken, pork, and ground beef all show in stock. Turkey is out of stock.

You might be able to get them cheaper direct from Keystone, on thier website. See the below thread I started. When (Aug 8th) I ordered some, they were $10.88 per can for the 28oz ground beef cans, after shipping to me. I ordered 2 cases, and they came quickly & well packed and in perfect shape. They are still in stock!

On The Level
It's probably safe to assume the distribution center workers see a lot of prep type food goods going through their hands. Would not be surprised to learn there's some malicious damage in handling going on there. Or maybe someone decided to help themselves to a couple cans out of the case.

I bought their ground beef when it was about $5 a can on amazon. I've only used a couple of the cans and it was very good. No way I can afford it any more.

I guess the second best thing to do is can your own ground beef.

I ran the numbers in the past, and I've run the numbers again. Both times, it seems that buying Keystone Ground Beef may actually be very close to doing it yourself. Obviously it matters most what the price of ground beef is locally for everyone, and if you can get it on sale or not.

Keystone uses 94% / 6% ground beef. Here locally 93% / 7% ground beef is $5.76 per pound. In my numbers I assume that all 28oz of pre-cook weight is in the can of 28oz (they probably drain off the fat, however, instead).

My local meat is $5.76/lb so 28oz of it is $10.08. A regular canning lid is $0.33, so without adding the cost of electricity, driving gas, time, & labor the price to can 28oz is $10.41.

Keystone's 28oz cans are currently $10.88 each shipped to my door.

For about $0.47 a can: I have to think that Keystone's product will probably last longer than mine. That savings is completely lost if I mess up even a single can.

However, if I find a great sale on 93/7 ground beef, that changes the numbers considerably.

Edited to add: Strike thru, base on 1911user below.

Maybe. Or maybe they did a really crummy job of packing and with rough handling both at the supplier and the delivery agent, the boxes burst open and damaged some cans. :shr: I've had orders from Sam's online have that happen, and they replaced the order (I could have asked for a refund instead).

The damaged cans might have been the reason for the reduced pricing initially.
They didn’t deliver the cans to me. I can’t imagine that they’d advertise lower prices on damaged cans and then actually ship them only to get returned from the second distribution center.

Where in the world are you seeing that price??? I’ve checked Keystone…

YAY! I revisited the actual Keystone website and bought a case of 12 cans 28 oz cans for $108… after what I purchased, the shipping was $75 but that’s fine with me. Thank you everyone!!

I'm glad you found some. Shipping prices vary, but wow... $75 vs $27. That is a pretty big difference. Still better than those 3rd party sellers, and better yet, direct from the factory (at least in theory) is fresher product.

Just to mention..Walmart online has the Keystone regular beef (not ground) for $9.98/28 oz can.
Shipping is free if you order over $35.00.

It may not be as versatile as ground, but it will sub in and fill bellies.

I've bought a few this way when adding them on to some other orders. There was a limit of 2 cans when ordered online.

(Note this was for sold/shipped by Walmart, not 3rd party sellers).

It's letting me do a max of 12 today, but that's probably dependent on daily inventory, and the limit changes all the time. Might also depend on location..how close you are to which warehouse.

All very true. I just double checked out of curiosity, I was wondering if it might have changed for me. Checked. Nope, it still has a limit of 2 for me. Congrats!

Walmart stores have them for $9 something right now.

28 oz cans?
Yes, but only in select stores and very limited variety if they carry anything Keystone.
The beef chunks and ground beef are the ones in the stores I'm around. Both Keystone items are empty shelves and have been for awhile.

Use this link to see if a store in your area carries any of the Keystone meats. Also, walmart usually has very tight limits for online orders, like 2 cans maximum. But the link might show an in store, in stock option.

The $30+ per can offerings are NOT from walmart, just other sellers renting space on walmart.com.
Just like the outside sellers on amazon with their crazy high pricing when amazon is out of stock.

From what I've seen, you don't save much not ordering direct from Keystone anymore, even with shipping added.
And direct from Keystone is the only way to have a good chance of no dented cans. Walmart and amazon have always been a crapshoot for bad packing and dented cans.

Neither here nor there.

My WM has a single can of Keystone ground beef, 28 ounces for $31.00, I just took a screen shot let me resize and post it.

ETA added the screen shot, this is from a seller not WM directly. My WM's don't sell this product at all.

Makes me happy that I canned a bunch of ground beef in 2020 and 2021.

Ugh…. I opened up a can of the Keystone ground beef. My stomach does NOT like this. I’m so hoping this isn’t food poisoning. I opened a can of the beef strips a few ago. Both kinds smell like dog food, so much so that my dog comes running. I doctored the ground beef up really well. It tastes good enough to live on when things go south. But right now, the only thing going south ….
