Whether you like history or not... These are pretty amazing considering they were taken up to 145 years ago: A compendium of photos from the Civil War era.

Truly fortunate that so many of these have survived. Probably a million wet plate photos were made during the civil war on glass plate.

Popular during the war, they lost their appeal afterwards and so many were sold for the glass. Many used in green houses. Over the years the sun caused the images to disappear. Run the cursor over the photograph and the picture caption will pop up. Click photo to enlarge.

Interesting how one of the pictures of Ford's Theater has a ghostly image of a man in front wearing a stovepipe hat.

I wonder whether the man stood still briefly before walking away during what was probably a very long exposure, or whether the image was added as a double exposure or even painted in with tint and a 000 brush as an "artistic" touch.

thank you for the link.

I urge you my friends here to look closely back into what happened during this horrific war, and the atrocities that were committed. Pray, prepare and keep a watchful eye out, for it can happen again in the blink of an eye.

Heartbreaking pics. Somehow, I pray we can avoid this, but I'm not sure we can.

By the end of the War of Northern Aggression, 550,000 men and boys (A few women also) perished on the fields of battle. As has been the case in recent wars, where the death toll has been much smaller, a similar scale of death will likely emerge in the upcoming war. However, the number of wounded will be a greater percentage of the total causalities, and the damage to the infrastructure will be as great, or even greater.

It should be noted that the death toll as a percentage of the total 35.2 million people of the country in 1865, was huge. It was as if a generation of males had perished.

By contrast, WWII saw about 450,000 military deaths (mostly young males) from a population of about 150 million people.

It is an open question as to whether the Union could survive another such tumult? It will not be an easy decision to take.
