I appreciate China Connection recent post...We here above the 62nd parallel are just starting to green up. The birch trees just popped yesterday and the robins are all following me around the various beds checking out what I am doing :)

Planted my garlic starts yesterday and horseradish today. I don't know if I will be here to harvest but I have to do this. Two potato beds in, one more to go...working on either a new bed or just a compost pile :) I love working outdoors, have many new peonies in despite the ridiculous amount of rocks (guess we had glaciers thru here or something).

Anyone else here grown horseradish? I like it really strong...but it is a new one for me! :)

"Anyone else here grown horseradish? I like it really strong...but it is a new one for me! " I grow horseradish. Now that DH is gone, I'm not so much a meateater, so don't use it much.
Horseradish likes deep fertile soil, if it can get it. The best horseradish i grew was years ago on the farm, in a big pile of very old horse manure. - A long time ago, and far, far away. It is a good perennial vegetable, if you replant the smaller pieces when or if you dig it for harvest.

We're not much farther ahead of you guys in Alaska here in southwestern NY state. For years, our "last frost date" was Memorial Day (May 31st, not this stupid "last Monday in May" crap!). Planting before then (anything not frost tolerant) was NOT a good idea.

Looks like we're going back to that...

seraphima, looks like you are off to a good start there already! Are those yellow daffodils near the tree up by the road? :) You still have a lot of raised beds, similar to what I had at my son's house. And thank you for the tip on the horseradish! :)

ST, our traditional date here for planting is also Memorial Day - too much risk of a frost until then. Before I retired, I always had the two weeks before and after Memorial Day weekend so I could have the time to get everything in. This year is looking to be a warm one but I am only planting a few things so far. Mainly lots of bed prep and leaf raking! Sigh, I will have to restrain myself from actually putting out my 2 dozen hanging baskets a while yet. ;)
