CHAT Afternoon snack

Dozdoats

Deceased
We usually eat hot two meals a day, breakfast and dinner. An afternoon snack is in order if breakfast does not hold out. Mine today was Beach Cliff sardines packed in Louisiana hot sauce, with saltine crackers.

DW and mom fall back on lo-salt Ritz crackers and honey roast creamy peanut butter...

I like sardines and saltine crackers, but I prefer the sardines in soybean oil. And like beef summer sausage and saltines. Now you guys are making me hungry!!!!!!
I can tell you that I have eaten smelt and even dipped for them. But I have never eaten a sardine in my life. I opened a can once was going to try them, and it made me gag. Don't know why, just knew I couldn't do it.

snacks here usually involve some sort of cheese - typically sharp - parmigiano or Vermont sharp chedar; sometimes smoked Gouda or Brie and some club crackers and some almonds - typically the wasabi or smokehouse variety . . . Raggedyann prefers the salt and vinegar variety

sardines are EXCELLENT! I may have to steal a page from the Doz playbuk here shortly . . . Raggedyann will be skipping those :shr:

Grew up dipping smelt, (many a spring night on the river mouth with Pa, a washtub and the Coleman lantern!) but he also taught my brother and I to eat sardines early on. Pickled pig's feet, too. Yumm!

Oh yeah...with smelt, you can pull the bones when they are cooked, just like a zipper. :)

Dad used to make sardine sandwiches when we were kids. He slathered on the mayo. on both slices of bread and added a slice of lettuce before lining it with the sardines. I followed in his footsteps except one slice of bread gets pesto instead of mayo. I use Polar brand-product of Germany. Or sometimes I just eat them out of the tin with Dijon mustard.

Canned fish... :kk2:

That's a huge portion of my preps!
I love the stuff plain out of the can or tin. Maybe salt and pepper too.
King Oscar Boneless Skinless Sardines in olive oil, olive oil/lemon, olive oil and Mediterranean spices.
Boneless Mackerel fillets in olive oil in the same flavors.
Yellow Fin Tuna in olive oil, that stuff is so good!

My dad likes sardines but I can't stand even the smell of them. They aren't as healthy for you as you think. My dad's endocrinologist rattled his cage about them and he didn't tell Mom or I because I was keeping his supply up. Too much sodium overrides the other benefits they are supposed to have. They also shouldn't be eaten by people with kidney disease or gout. And be careful where they are sourced from due to ocean toxins.

Now this is what I call an entire meal for me. High protein and very to zero carbs. Great as a replacement meal when I have a heavy carb other meal but still can't skip for other reasons.
It is an entire meal for me. Normally breakfast. But parts of it can be snacks at other times.

My body doesn't like hardboiled eggs normally. But friend's fresh chicken and duck eggs break that rule. And I'm considering a test batch of quail eggs.

I eat breakfast and dinner and snack at other times and have dropped down to 212 pounds.

I like sardines and canned fish generally in oil or mustard.

I normally eat two pieces of Russel Stover Sugar Free Chocolate Assorted Caramels with peanuts or almonds for snacks and after dinner for dessert. My other snack is oatmeal cookies with peanut butter which are shared with furr buddies as are the peanuts.

Dinner tonight was fried pork loin with gravy and rice which the DW did a wonderful job.

Never tried the sardines, at least to the best of my knowledge- but ritz and peanut butter are not only my snack they're my usual breakfast/lunch and dinner as well.

Otherwise I smoosh some homemade cheese onto some homemade sausage, and use homegrown cuke slices to make sammiches.

Duck eggs aren't my favorite. Have you ever had goose eggs? Been a long time since I've been able to find them, but they make really great omelets as well as soft boiled and poached eggs.

I bought a dozen duck eggs a couple years ago. Very thick shells, and almost orange yolk. To my rudimentary egg palate, I couldn’t detect much of a flavor difference. But they were much more full bodied. I looked for goose eggs after that, but those are unobtanium these days.

No goose eggs around here. But if the opportunity come up, I'll try them.

I don't taste much difference in any of them. Except quail eggs were an absolute no for my body for a while. They kicked off the same reaction that eating yolks did. That reaction went away after they treated the kidney issue.

Saved, to glorify God.
I tried Beach Cliff sardines ONCE. The can i got had fish LIKE SARDINES but they had scales as hard and impossible to eat AS CARP scales!

Must have been some other kind of fish in the net with
the sardines. Yuk.
