TRANS Accused of having an incorrect visa, Mem Fox detained by immigration officials at LA airpo

I realize this is the sort of article the MSM is going to play up to try to make all the new immigration policies look bad; so I am posting it with that caution. However, the Homeland Security/Airport Immigration folks need to wise up and treat people with dignity - especially those whom it is OBVIOUS are not a threat and frequent travlers to book or the US will simply have no tourist industry.

Even BEFORE Trump took office, like right after Homeland Security took over and a major women reported from the Times of London was held because they changed the visa rules and didn't bother to announce it yet - I've heard many Europeans say things like "The US is just sort of becoming a no travel zone especially for tourism, sort of like Israel."

Translation "it is simply too expensive and too dangerous to risk going there to spend money shopping and have fun; and now immigration have made it such a headache it isn't worth it."

At the moment, this trade-off may seem "worth it" but I have to ask WHY people like this author are being treated this way? Maybe her books got her on a "list" but I don't think so - I am thinking this is either just some extremely dumb policy (possible these goons are not always bright) or:

This is being done intentionally to create a backlash against stricter immigration enforcement - and the press was let in out to create just this sort of article.

I've seen this sort of thing with immigration reform in the past - usually stories of families torn apart by raids intended to cause a backlash while the factories actually employee and benefiting from the illegal workers are ignored (but families and small businesses with one or two employees are targeted).

Accused of having an incorrect visa, Mem Fox detained by immigration officials at LA airport

AUSTRALIA’S best-loved children’s author, Mem Fox, was left sobbing and shaken after being detained for two hours and aggressively interrogated by immigration officials at Los Angeles airport.

Fox says she’s unlikely to ever travel to the United States again after being made to feel like “a prisoner at Guantanamo Bay”.

[Now see it is all his fault, though this has been a on-going problem since about 2003- Melodi]President Donald Trump had created the climate for this sort of behaviour, she said, adding: “This is what happens when extremists take power.”

Mem Fox. Picture: Matt Turner

En route to Milwaukee for a conference on February 9, where she was to deliver the opening keynote address at a literacy conference, Fox was ushered into an airport holding room and told she was travelling on the wrong visa. This was incorrect and the US Embassy in Canberra has since apologised. Fox, 70, said that by the time she checked in to her hotel she was shaking and sobbing.

“I am old and white, innocent and educated, and I speak English fluently,” she said. “Imagine what happened to the others in the room, including an old Iranian woman in her 80s, in a wheelchair.

“The way I was treated would have made any decent American shocked to the core, because that’s not America as a whole, it really isn’t. It’s just that people have been given permission to let rip in a fashion that is alarming.”

The irony that the two most popular of her more than 25 books published in the US, Ten Little Fingers and Ten Little Toes and Whoever You Are, are both about diversity, was not lost on her. Nor was the fact that the theme of the conference she was attending was inclusivity and diversity.

Fox has visited the US more than 100 times since 1985, and is widely known there as an author and literacy educator.

After returning to Adelaide, she made a complaint to the US Embassy in Canberra, and received an emailed apology. An embassy spokeswoman told The Advertiser consular cases were not discussed with the media for privacy reasons.

[Now we get to the part where the media spin it as a personal attack because of her work - I actually think it was just agents trying to get a quota of "holds" - Melodi]

Her experience has confirmed in Fox the importance of her new book, I’m Australian Too, about multiculturalism, illustrated by an Indian-born Australian, Ronojoy Ghosh. Fox wrote the book in late 2014 in response to what she saw as a rising tide of antagonism towards immigrants and refugees. “And it’s got worse since then,” she said. “I just feel that the hate speech that is going on is trying to change that aspect of our national character and it would be heartbreaking if that happened.”

You did notice the part about immigration being WRONG, her being detained by MISTAKE and the APOLOGY she received?

She did NOTHING WRONG, the US immigration goons were WRONG; the fact that she is famous only means this got in the newspaper.

Again I think it is being SPUN, to make blame it all the Trump administration but this sort of thing has been on-going pretty much since Homeland Security took over airports; all because they don't want to "racially profile" and the immigration and airport "security" people get in trouble if they don't meet a "quota" of "interesting" people to investigate.

Actually the rules (such as they my have been codified----or made up on the spot) SHOULD have had her passing right through, instead of stuffed into Interrogation Room B and interrogated.

Nuttin to do with fame or multiculturalism.

For a bunch of folks who most all used to ABHOR and Loathe Jingoism, you seem to have been heavily empowered IN and BY Jingoism since Nov. And quite honestly, it looks FINE on y'all as it coordinates well with the boots and jodhpurs.

There are stupid Immigration officers in every country......even Canada!! lol

My friend likes to "collect" entry stamps to each place she travels and when we drove across the border to Washington and back on a day trip she asked for her passport to be stamped re-entering Canada.

We were there for an hour, as the officer in training marked the request form and sent her inside for her stamp - only he put the wrong code on it and that was for an interrogation of her travel history (lots of countries and day trips inside Europe and N. America).

Being a 70 year old white lady with a huge grin wasn't really suspicious, but she had a lot of explaining due to the incorrect code the employee had made - and that is probably the same kind of error made in this author's story.

Not really cause for sobbing on her part, just frustration at being held, when a simple phone call or computer check would have shown her past history and why she traveled so much - just breaking in new employees, likely.

Need more training, but still nowhere as bad as the strip searchers at the airport......

Next time you get to spend a couple hours with 2-4 customs and immigration guys shouting at you and demanding to know why you are REALLY coming into the country because they don't believe what you are saying, THEN you can say the above. Unfortunately, MANY of these guys are ijits, and, as Doz puts it "badge heavy" and enjoy watching people squirm.

Whining crying, whimpering, poor little liberal. I went into Canada at Cut Bank Montana to deliver a few head of my livestock purchased by a couple of ranchers around Lethbridge. All paper work and veterinary work had been done and cleared prior to my trip. The vet bill was over $120 per head for Canadian requirements. Got to the Canadian Customs and my truck trailer and stock were seized. They wanted to search through all of it. I was put in a small holding room and interrogated by two agents. I was also searched. I had to have all my paper work reviewed by a custom official to the tune of another $100.00 per head. Six hours later I was cleared to go on to the ranch. Nobody was nice to me nor did they smile. Just another American A-Hole that thinks he has rights and don't bend a knee to a queen.

There seems to be some serious reading comprehension problems on this thread.

Yup.

Folks need to go back and actually read the first post, word for word, sounding them out if needed, but paying special attention to line 2 and 3 under her picture and then para 3, down where she points out she actually likes Americans.

AND s has been pointed out, if this is how we "welcome" typical tourist demographics we are in trouble.

Perhaps you should go back and read the story. How many times has she traveled to America? If this is the only time this has happened after all those times. What percentage of trips did she have a problem with?

Typical usually means a lot more than a low single digit.

Yep, and it can even be a horrific experience outside the US - we had this happen decades ago in Sweden because my husband was wearing a Thor's hammer - we had no idea what the problem was (they didn't tell us) and while they didn't exactly scream (that's very "American") they intimidated, implied, got right up in our faces and yep I was crying.

This also contributed to our moving from the country eventually - it wasn't the only reason, but this was before the US security people went insane and I had never had an experience like that - now I know and at least we were not locked in a room; and we were "profiled."

You people have NO IDEA what this is like until you experience it - and we go the "Scandinavian Lite" version - also at least in Sweden, the said they were sorry on the spot; explained afterwards what the problem was so we could avoid it. None of this "we don't have to tell you anything" either.

Isn't it convenient that this happened to an "old white lady" who just happens to make her living writing books about diversity and inclusiveness. Oh and she also just happens to be a Trump hater. I think that is why the responses on this thread are not what some expect. Perhaps we've been set up too many times by the lying left and the press. There's not one thread of proof other than the "victim's" say so that this went down the way described.

being made to feel like “a prisoner at Guantanamo Bay”
......she has only ever had a problem once in her career, with all her travels?? - so many of these "interrogations" are totally random and her turn finally came around, by the numbers. She is an Aussie Snowflake but I assumed she would be a bit tougher, because she couldn't vote for Hillary.

My husband was stopped at the US border crossing (same one mentioned above into Washington) by a newbie with the swagger and big sunglasses (I know that is profiling LOL), and asked about any criminal charges......

He ended up inside explaining to the Supervisor about the 50-year old charge of damage at a football game fight when he was 21 (broke a car antenna) and they both ended up laughing, so some Immig people do have a sense of humour......was told to use his American passport to travel to US and his Canadian one to re-enter Canada. So he always travels with both.

50 years ago, 3 Australian girl friends and I went to Montana from Canada to shop and one didn't think to take her passport - so her only ID was her credit card and our vouching for her .......they let her in and we still laugh about that.

Some good guys, some not so much......but tough times call for tougher measures. Have lots of stories about crossing borders in lots of places, and being questioned intently - but sometimes they just goof up and admit and apologize.

Question
: If she had the correct Visa, why would the US Embassy in Australia apologize? The apology should have come from US Immigration, not the Embassy - maybe they speak for all international bureaucracy and travel?

Here, let me edit it to fit what I meant:

AND as has been pointed out, if this NOW is how we "welcome" typical tourist demographics we are in trouble.

I might also add, should you choose to diagram the sentence correctly that the word typical refers to her TYPE of person/demographic, white, middle aged moderately wealthy with disposable income. It does not refer to her total experiences.

Reading comprehension, again.

Yep and if the US really doesn't want tourism dollars, well that should be spelled out and at this point in history there ARE other places people can visit and spend money.

Having been raised near a Coastal Village in California whose two main industries were fishing and tourism; and from what I saw there years ago they still are, this could be a potential voter issue down the line.

I also point out that before the 2008 downturn there were so many Irish and UK folks with money to burn going to New York on Christmas "buying sprees" that the local larger big-named stores hired in special Irish shopping "assistants" and formed "Irish buying clubs" etc..(some of this was done for the UK and other Europeans too).

I mean sure this stopped once the economy crashed but there are still other people coming in from other places doing the same thing; and yep certain countries may simply be too dangerous to let this keep happening - but one of the largest is Saudi Arabia and their citizens were not even put under watch much less put under the special ban that was struck down.

Maybe the US will decide it is worth not having few if any visitors over to spend money, but that will increase the unemployment problem in many areas; and those people will vote (and not just in Coastal California either).

Mem Fox's husband guilty of child abuse

Malcolm Fox was found guilty in Adelaide's District Court of four counts of unlawful sexual intercourse with a teenage student while he was drama teacher in the 1980s.

At the time of the offending his wife Mem Fox was celebrating the success of her popular children's book Possum Magic.

Fox gave evidence during his trial that the boy had made sexual advances towards him and performed oral sex on him.

But he said that only happened after the boy had finished school and Fox was no longer his teacher.

Under South Australian law the age of consent is 17, but where the accused is in a position of authority the age is 18 years.

The prosecution said Fox's version of events beggared belief, and he had made it up to explain why the student knew he was uncircumcised.

Judge Gordon Barrett found Fox guilty on all counts.

Mem Fox, who has supported her husband at every court hearing, gaped with her mouth open and muttered "that is absolutely unbelievable" from the body of the courtroom.

Fox is the father of South Australian Labor MP Chloe Fox.

The court heard the offences took place in Fox's school office, in Fox's marital bed and at the students home.

Judge Barrett said he found Fox on the witness stand to be "concise, and almost curt at times".

He said Fox "appeared unemotional", but in contrast he found the student's evidence to be credible.

"In my view the complainant gave a credible account of sexual experiences with the accused," Judge Barrett said in his judgment.

Fox walked with his arm around his wife outside court and made kissing gestures at each other in front of news cameras.

The case returns to court in a fortnight, when a date is expected to be set for sentencing submissions.

So what's the problem? I don't buy that European tourists aren't going to come to the US, spend money and shop. They are all over Hawaii, they come here to go on cruises, we meet many Europeans on cruises. All they gripe about is the Euro is worth crap against our dollar. DH gets frisked and pulled over every time we go through TSA. He has a knee replacement. Whenever we plan a trip and we must go to a foreign port, we make sure our papers are in order. As a tourist, it's up to us to do this. Mistakes are made, some went through JFK recently without being screened. What if?

Well to be honest with you, the Europeans we met on the ship can stay home. They trash our country, its leader and they want respect from me. I just tell them that Nigel Farage is my hero and love him to death. We brag about our money going further than theirs on the ship. They stiff the cabin stewards and waiters out of their tips. Yes, please stay home.

This fits the profile for more underage sexual abuse with political connections. They fit right in with the pizzagate crowd. I wonder if they are friends with Podesta?

Maybe the sexual predator attachment came up on a computer search at customs? She seems to be all in for her husbands play toys.

There is an insurgency going on. Both outside and inside the bureaucracy.
It would not surprise me in the least that there were elements of Homeland Security which had decided to make life hell for a few travelers to 'highlight' Trump's 'mistakes' - according to them.
Just as it was reported there were Border Control offices which were not following the Trump administration's guidelines on deportations.
