WINTHROP — A chaotic and deadly scene erupted Saturday afternoon in this seaside town when an armed man crashed a hijacked truck into a building, then turned on two bystanders and shot them dead before being killed by police.
Police were still reconstructing the chain of events last night, and police said they were looking into whether one of the two bystanders engaged the truck hijacker after the accident, which leveled the building.

Authorities did not identify the suspect but said they believe he was armed with multiple weapons. The victims were also not identified.

WCVB-TV reported Saturday night that one of the victims was a retired State Police trooper. Video broadcast by the station depicted police and other public safety officers lining the street outside the state medical examiner’s office in Boston’s South End, as the body was escorted there.
In addition to three dead, three others were being treated in the Emergency Department at Massachusetts General Hospital, a spokeswoman said. One was in fair condition and the other two in good condition, an MGH spokeswoman said.

Officials said the suspect stole the truck from a plumbing and drain company and crashed into the building at the corner of Cross and Shirley streets a little before 3 p.m.

After the crash, Winthrop police Chief Terence Delehanty said, the suspect jumped over a fence and approached the first gunshot victim, and then, in an alley between two houses, encountered the second gunshot victim.
Bob Harrington, 63, who lives across from the building destroyed in the crash, said he heard a series of loud crashes, went to his window, and saw a young man emerge from the truck. The man had no shoes on and was walking toward Veterans Road when Harrington said he lost sight of him.

“Within 10 seconds of him vanishing from my sight line from my window, I heard ‘boom, boom, boom, boom,’” he said.
Harrington said he went outside and ducked behind a vehicle as more shots were fired and smoke filled the air, making the neighborhood look like “the Wild West.”
In the road, Harrington said, he saw a woman whom he estimated to be in her 20s.

“I walked over to the girl, put my hand on her and said, ‘Are you all right?’” he said. “She didn’t move. She was dead.”
Further down the road, Harrington said he saw an officer standing over the suspect, telling him, “Stay there! Stay there!”
“He looked like he was bleeding, like they shot him,” Harrington said.

Another witness said the shooter had jumped into his car after leaving the truck and before shooting the two victims.
Paulo Correia, said the suspect approached his vehicle and climbed into the back seat.
“I thought he was just trying to get some help for himself,” Correia said in a brief telephone interview.
In a Facebook post, Correia said the man instructed him to drive.

“I told him to get out of my car...twice,” wrote Correia, who confirmed the account in the Facebook post to the Globe.
After the man exited his vehicle, Correia wrote that the man pulled out a gun and shot a pedestrian.
“I saw him shoot someone in my rearview mirror,” Correia told the Globe.
One of the first officers on the scene reported a person pinned in car, and then yelled: radio: “Shots fired! Shots fired!”
Delehanty said that two people in a passenger vehicle sustained non-life-threatening injuries in car crash that occurred during the incident.

Fire Chief Paul Flanagan, in an interview, said the scene covered about a quarter of a mile.
“The people who were pinned in the car were at the wrong place at the wrong time,” said Flanagan.
One police officer was taken to an area hospital for an evaluation but was not seriously injured, according to Winthrop police.
“I just want to start by expressing our condolences to the families of the victims,” State Police Colonel Christopher Mason said at an evening news conference. Authorities did not identify any of the victims.

Authorities Saturday night said the two gunshot victims included a woman who died of her injuries at a local hospital and a man who was pronounced dead at the scene.
The officer who shot the suspect was not seriously injured and will be placed on administrative leave during an investigation of the shooting by the Suffolk District Attorney’s office.
Parts of Winthrop police’s response to Saturday’s shootout were recorded in dramatic radio calls. One of the first officers on the scene reported a person pinned in a vehicle, and then yelled on the radio: “Shots fired! Shots fired!”
The officer reports that one person is down, apparently shot. “It looked like he had a gun, he fired it at them,” he said.

More yelling is recorded on the calls and shortly afterward, another officer reports another person injured in the shooting: “Control we got another body down, another shot victim down.”
A few minutes later, a superior officer asked what was happening; one officer responded: “Deputy, we have multiple shots fired, multiple victims down, multiple firearms on scene.”
In the immediate aftermath of the crash, police and firefighters worked around the box truck in an area that was cordoned off with yellow police tape.

Much of the building had crumbled into rubble that was strewn across the sidewalk.

About 100 feet from the crashed truck, a GMC Terrain sat on a sidewalk with most of its windows smashed out and its air bags deployed. The car’s front end and rear were damaged, and pieces of debris were scattered across the sidewalk and road. The vehicle was later removed on a flatbed truck.

Evan Ferragamo, 15, came out of his Shirley Street home when he heard a loud bang and saw the car and box truck had just crashed.
“I saw smoke coming off both cars and then I heard cracking ... and I realized the cracks were gunshots, and my first instinct was to duck and run [back] into the house,” he said. “I saw people ducking right in front of the car, and that’s when I realized it was gunshots because they’re not just going to be ducking there for nothing.”
Evan said he went back into his house to check on his mother and younger brother.
“I was in shock and didn’t know what to do,” he said. “My heart was racing, it’s still racing. ... I can’t believe that this would happen in Winthrop. It’s just a calm, quiet place.”

The box truck was pulled off the property by about 10:40 p.m. after an effort that took about two hours. A tow truck pulled from behind while another truck with an overhead crane lifted the front end of the box truck off the ground.
The truck’s cab, which was mostly hidden from view after it crashed and the building collapsed on top of it, showed heavy damage with the hood dragging on the pavement yet still attached to the truck as it was pulled onto the street.
Tree limbs, shingles and other pieces of debris from the house had piled on top of the cab in a mound of rubble.
Spectators from the neighborhood and surrounding community stood behind the police tape watching and taking pictures of the scene late into the evening.

Suspected gunman killed after police say he shot 2 bystanders dead in Winthrop
Gunfire erupted after suspect crashed stolen truck into building, police say

June 26, 2021 at 3:48 pm EDTBy Maria Papadopoulos, Boston 25 News and Litsa Pappas, Boston 25 News
WINTHROP, Mass. — A suspected gunman is dead after police say he stole a truck, crashed it into a building, got out of the truck and shot two bystanders dead before officers at the scene returned fire, fatally wounding him, police said.

The incident unfolded around 2:45 p.m. Saturday, when that suspected gunman stole a box truck owned by a plumbing and drain company and then crashed into a residential building on Veterans Road, state police said.

After the crash, the unidentified armed suspect got out of the truck, walked away from the truck and then fatally shot two bystanders, a female and a male.

“We are investigating whether the male may have been trying to engage the suspect to end the threat,” state police said in a statement. “The female and male are both deceased.”

“Winthrop Police arrived on scene within moments and shot the suspect. The suspect also is deceased,” state police said.

Police said there is “no active danger to the public” but they are asking the public to avoid the area.

When officers arrived on scene, they found two people suffering from gunshot wounds.

Police also saw a suspect -- and shot at him, police said.

One police officer, who was not seriously injured, was taken to an area hospital to be evaluated.

“I heard the boom boom boom, I ran down, first thing I saw was the body in the middle of the street”

Neighbors described a harrowing scene.

“When I first heard it, I go, ‘Another accident.’ But then it sounded so loud, like an earthquake, like everything was shaking, it was so loud, the loudest I’ve ever heard,” said Bobby Harrington, who lives nearby.

Harrington ran outside to find a truck had smashed into the small building on Shirley Street. He said the truck also slammed into another car head-on that was going the opposite direction.

”So when he hit this house, I don’t even think he ever touched the brakes,” said Harrington.

Then Harrington said he saw the driver of the stolen truck get out, stumbling, with no shoes on.

”Then he started jogging, I heard the ‘Boom boom boom,’ I ran down, I looked down, the first thing I saw was the body in the middle of the street, so I ran down and got down behind the car because the shots were still going. You could see the smoke from the gun,” said Harrington.

Police said the gunman shot and killed a woman in the street before killing another man. Harrington said he went over to see if that woman was okay but saw she wasn’t moving and realized she didn’t make it.

”To me she was just walking down the street, she had a backpack on, she didn’t look that old, I think she just happened to be there,” said Harrington.

An active investigation is underway by the State Police Detective Unit for Suffolk County and the Suffolk County District Attorney’s Office, with assistance from Winthrop Police, the State Police Crime Scene Services Section, and the State Police Ballistics Unit.

Winthrop is located east of Boston near Logan International Airport.

I was going to try and see if there was something significant about the structure that was hit.
I can't find a street number for it.
Goggle street view seems to maybe show a 2 on the window frame but that's out of sequences. And for some reason the map has no number on it unlike every other structure around.
Kind of non descript little building, possibly an office of some sort at one time but no signs on it.

WINTHROP, Mass. —

A retired Massachusetts State Police trooper and a U.S. Air Force veteran were shot and killed in Winthrop by a man, who was later fatally shot by police, after he crashed a stolen work truck into a home, according to authorities.

Suffolk County District Attorney Rachael Rollins said that David L. Green and 60-year-old Ramona Cooper were "executed" by 28-year-old Nathan Allen Saturday afternoon.

The shootings are being investigated as possible hate crimes because Rollins said "troubling white supremacist rhetoric" in Allen's handwriting was discovered by investigators. That handwriting contained anti-Semitic statements and racist statements against Black people, according to Rollins.

“He walked by several other people that were not Black and they are alive," Rollins said. "They were not harmed. … They are alive and these two visible people of color are not.”

Winthrop police Chief Terence Delehanty said his department received a call shortly before 2:45 p.m. Saturday about the crash involving the stolen truck. He confirmed that no one was inside the home at the time of the crash.

After the crash, authorities said Allen exited the vehicle and proceeded to flee on foot. At some point shortly thereafter, Allen is believed to have shot Cooper and Green. Green was pronounced dead at the scene, while Cooper was transported to Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston, where she was later pronounced dead.

Delehanty said one victim was found by Winthrop police on Shirley Street, about a half-block away from the scene of the crash. The second victim was engaged by the suspect in an alleyway between two houses that was further down the street, according to the police chief.

According to Rollins, Cooper was shot three times in the back and Green was shot four times in the head and three times in his torso.

Police then engaged Allen, who Delehanty said was armed with two weapons, and at least one officer, a Winthrop police sergeant, shot him at the intersection of Shirley Street and Veterans Road. Allen was transported to Mass General, where he died of his injuries.

At this time, investigators believe Allen acted alone in the crash and shootings. Rollins said Allen was "not on my radar" and that he had a lawful license to carry that transferred to another town, meaning he had nothing on his background check.

In a statement, MSP Superintendent Col. Christopher Mason said Green was murdered outside of his Beach Road home.

According to Mason, Green had an honorable 36-year career in law enforcement and retired on Dec. 31, 2016. He became a Metropolitan District Commission police officer in 1980 and became a state trooper 12 years later when the MDC police were merged into the MSP.

Green spent much of his MSP career assigned to the Boston State Police Barracks at Leverett Circle, Mason said.

Rollins said law enforcement stood around Green's body at the scene of the shooting. Police officers, firefighters and emergency medical technicians lined Albany Street in Boston as Green's body was being transported to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner.

“Trooper David Green more than upheld the ideals of integrity, professionalism, and service to others that are the hallmarks of a great Trooper. We are heartbroken by his loss and offer our condolences to his family and friends," Mason said in his statement.

Rollins said Green rose to the rank of staff sergeant in the Air Force and that she was still involved in the military.

"This is a sad day, Rollins said. "These two people protected our rights. They fought for us to be safe and to have the opinions that we have, and they were executed. We will find out why and find out more about this man that did this."

U.S. Air Force Staff Sgt. Ramona Cooper

U.S. Air Force Staff Sgt. Ramona Cooper

State police investigators said the truck Allen stole is owned by a local plumbing and drain company. Video from Sky5 shows the stolen truck involved in the crash belongs to Rapid Flow Inc., a sewer and drain cleaning company in Revere.

Delehanty said another vehicle was involved in the crash with the stolen truck. The two occupants of that vehicle were transported to an area hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Sky5 spotted that vehicle, which sustained severe front-end damage from the crash.

According to Rollins, Allen was traveling at a rate twice the speed limit in the stolen truck and was heading in the direction of Jewish synagogues.

“We don’t know where he was going. That is mere speculation," Rollins said. "We do know that he had anti-Semitic rhetoric written in his own hand.”

The Winthrop police sergeant who shot Allen was taken to an area hospital to be evaluated, but Delehanty said the officer was not seriously injured. Delehanty announced Sunday that the officer involved in the shooting had been released from the hospital.

“It was extremely heroic. He’s a great police officer. He’s a great sergeant. He isolated a significant threat to this community and ended that threat,” Delehanty said.

“It’s something that we don’t wake up in the morning wishing to do," the police chief added. "Again, (no officer) was physically harmed, but we are emotionally harmed by are actions that are necessary to protect the community. We want to make sure he’s taken care of today, tomorrow and in the future.”

The sergeant will be placed on administrative leave while the Suffolk County District Attorney's Office investigates the shooting, per standard procedure.

The Winthrop Police Department, Massachusetts State Police and Suffolk County District Attorney's Office are investigating the shooting.

Boston police, Chelsea police, Revere police, MBTA transit police and officers with the The Northeastern Massachusetts Law Enforcement Council responded to the scene on Saturday assist Winthrop police.

Police: Shooter Who Killed 2 Black People in Massachusetts Was White Supremacist
Police: Shooter Who Killed 2 Black People in Massachusetts Was White Supremacist

(Dreamstime.com)

Monday, 28 June 2021 07:59 AM

A man who rammed a truck into an empty house in Massachusetts, then singled out two Black people from a crowd of bystanders and shot them dead, was a white supremacist who had written that white people are "apex predators," prosecutors said on Sunday.

Nathan Allen, 28, stole a truck from a plumbing company, crashed it into a home in Winthrop, Massachusetts, then got out and killed bystanders David Green and Ramona Cooper, said Suffolk County District Attorney Rachel Rollins. Police who responded to the scene fired on Allen, who died in hospital.
Allen had "troubling white supremacist rhetoric found in own handwriting," and there was evidence of "anti-Semitic and racist statements against Black individuals," Rollins said in a statement.

"This individual wrote about the superiority of the white race. About whites being 'apex predators,'" Rollins added. "He walked by several other people that were not Black, they are alive, they were not harmed."
Police described the victim Green as a retired state trooper who had served 36 years on the force, while Cooper was identified as a 60-year-old Air Force veteran. Cooper died in the hospital after being shot three times in the back. Green was shot four times in the head and three times in the torso, and pronounced dead at the scene.

In security camera footage obtained by ABC News, the stolen truck can be seen being driven out of frame, after which a loud noise is heard, described as the sound of it hitting the house.
White supremacist propaganda in the United States, including racist, anti-Semitic and anti-LGBTQ messages nearly doubled last year to a record level, the Anti-Defamation League said in March. The New York-based advocacy group's data showed 5,125 cases reported in 2020, compared to 2,724 in 2019.
