My hairdresser related this story to me the last time I saw her.
A group of local women took a road trip to Champaign, IL in November to do some Christmas shopping. While they are in line checking out at the Target store there, a few big black women, with arms full of clothes, just walk right out the front door. The alarm goes off and not one employee moves to stop them. A few of the road trip group had already checked out and were waiting in front for the stragglers. They followed the thieves into the parking lot and tried to stop them. (NOT what I would do.) It didn't even faze the thieves, who just moseyed to their vehicles and loaded the booty into them. When those outside came back in, they questioned the employees as to what happens next. The employees said nothing. They didn't even bother to call the police because nothing is ever done. Apparently, this happens at least once a week! (I guess some are going to get their reparations one way or another.)
My hairdresser told her husband the story as they were walking out after spending $500 on Christmas gifts and he hit the roof! He said, "You mean to tell me that I could have just walked out of there with $500 worth of merchandise, and nothing would have been done?" Nope...sorry. You are of the wrong protected class. You would have been thrown in jail so fast, your shadow would have been sprinting to keep up.

That's what I don't understand about the thefts of phones. The IMEI numbers get flagged and all the carrier's use the same database.
What good are they?
None. They’re bricked before they can be activated. But ghetto apes don’t understand that.

Could they be broken down for parts (like batteries) and sold on the black market? I would think the word would get out that apple products are a waste of time otherwise. But I guess if they are fairly confident that they wouldn't suffer any repercussions, they've got nothing to lose.

Phones put on display become bricks when disconnected from the display they're hooked to. I don't think display models can ever be enabled since they're not intended to ever be sold.

They're left intact and selling them to unsuspecting suckers is the plan from the start. It's a real show to see someone show up to a Verizon or Apple store with the "used phone they just bought that doesn't work" and they get told they have a stolen phone that will never work.

In californication, it's probably illegal to tell them that they have a stolen phone.
From a quick look the screen and battery each are over a hundred bucks. Exact costs depend upon the model of phone. That then gets into the third party repair market and their parts supply stream. That the batteries are now part of the phone's "morher board" in many cases makes things even more interesting....
