The Monroe County School District is investigating a girl’s report that she was called the n-word by a student, and that another student drew a racist cartoon on a chalkboard.

“This is unbelievable,” said Jwanna Powell, whose 13-year-old daughter texted her Friday morning from Sugarloaf School to report she had been called the racist slur by a boy.
The girl said she entered the cafeteria and the boy said, “Look at that [n-word].”

Powell said the girl also said that students were making fun of George Floyd, who a jury recently found was murdered in Minneapolis by former police officer Derek Chauvin.

“The School Board has clear-cut policies regarding bullying and harassment,” Superintendent Theresa Axford said. The superintendent said she spent 30 minutes on the phone with Powell on Friday.

Axford said she did not dispute Powell’s account of the incident.

“We are going to investigate, use disciplinary procedures and protect the victim going forward,” Axford said. “The social workers are developing a plan right now.”

Powell, a medical scientist currently working in Juneau, Alaska, said she isn’t one to seek publicity but wants the public to know about the incident.

“This is my daughter. I’m going to protect my daughter,” Powell said. “This is not going to be swept under the rug. The parents need to be held accountable. I’m sure it’s learned behavior.”
She isn’t asking for the students involved to be expelled, she said.

The girl said she would like to see changes at Sugarloaf when it comes to racism by students.
“I know a lot of teachers hear what they say but all they do is tell them to hush and they don’t take any responsibility in what they’re saying,” she said.

The girl will attend school remotely by computer starting Monday.
“She’s not going back after today,” Powell said Friday of her daughter. “You’re talking about a straight-A student who has to stay home now because of this.”

Powell said in the two years the family has lived in the Keys, this is the second time they’ve experienced racism.

The first time was when they wanted to rent a house on Big Pine Key. The person who made the referral, though, reported back that the owner didn’t want the family to live there.
“He texted her back and said he couldn’t rent his house out to Black people because his neighbors would be upset,” Powell said.

“We’re leaving,” Powell said. “Honestly, I can’t put up with it. This is the last straw. I”m done.”
Powell said her family will move back to Washington state.

“I was warned prior to coming down here and I did not listen,” Powell said of the Keys. “I was told a lot of the Trumpers are down here, a lot of racism is down here. It’s not like it used to be. I just think it needs exposure. That’s the only way to stop this.”

So what are they going to do, arrest a 13-year-old boy and throw him in jail? Destroy his life, deny him an education and ruin any future employment when he becomes an adult?

The problem is the kid doesn't own enough of anything for them to sue him. Maybe they can sue somebody else, ah yeah perhaps the landlord, but really it's the entire town. After all, they have been insulted twice.

I am so tired of this garbage. I listened to a preacher on YouTube and he was talking about identity. What name, or label, you call yourself is who you are and "insult" was one of the worst. It doesn't matter what color they are or aren't this family will never find peace or fulfillment and insults are all they will get.

I realize this fact upsets all the believers in the virtues of "diversity" but you are bumping up against human nature.

If there is a racial war coming, no one can be certain of the outcome now. It will be vicious, brutal, and bloody.

No rational person wants war, but a war doesn't need the victims consent to involve them.

When neither side will be reasonable, the only way to determine the outcome is by fighting.

Our local nextdoor exploded last week because some mom said a grown man had ridden down her middle class mostly white Subdivision street in the middle of the day and called her 12 year old son a N__g__r.

100+ idiots who had probably recently moved in to our once quiet peaceful area immediately posted how horrible and shameful and on and on and on.... blah blah blah... Not one person was even willing to say the obvious. Not one.

Does this warrant all the response? Not at all.

And the parent connects this to Trump.

Since this made it to MEEDIA, Trump lawyers should be all over this defamation.

I might even opine that Jwanna can move but Jwanna can't get away from human nature - and this what this is.

One human looking to dominate another - even by damaging their "feelings."

I was two years younger than everyone else in my grade and when I moved from Kansas to Louisiana in eighth grade, I was literally tortured by my peers. No one really stopped it. I did have a wonderful teacher>>>>>Mr. Nail, who did make this a point to give the class something to think about, and things got a little better, but over all my self esteem and confidence was shot to hell. And those years are SO crucial in anyone's development.

I did live through it.....and found most of those who teased me got married right out of high school and started poppin' out kiddos!

this was my first thought. what about all the other people that get insulted and have whatever other things said about them? on a daily and weekly basis? it doesn't make it right, it just makes it life.

and 2 times in 2 years......in a place she was warned was SO racist.

Seriously? I got called a lot of names growing up. An "N" word among them...NERD! Four-eyes, geek, bat (blind), dork, and so on because I had to start wearing glasses in the third grade.

The only way to PROPERLY deal with a bully is to put a fist into their mouth...that shuts them up right quickly. Doesn't even matter if the person is bigger than you (ESPECIALLY if they are bigger than you), surprise and outright VICIOUS violence rules the day.

Actually your FIRST shot should be to the nose. That makes their eyes water and breathing difficult. Followed by a swift kick to a knee and the Jewels (not necessarily in that order) followed with of couple of punches to either or both eyes. Hard to hit back when you can't see, breath or run. And the black eyes are a reminder TO EVERYONE that "you just might be crazy". Bully's hate and fear crazy.

Geez, who didn't get called a name in school? Always being the shortest, I was called a lot of names and bullied. My mom just told me that since I couldn't change my height, I would have to deal with it. My sister, who was another vertically challenged, managed to find a big friend who would deal with anyone that harassed her.

Name calling has been going on since the beginning of time..."four eyes", "metal mouth", "crater face", "nerd", "runt", "brown nose-er", "tubby", etc. Most of us learned to deal with it. Only one group seems to be unable to deal with a name that they themselves use with abandon. I am willing to bet that this didn't happen. An investigation will take place and nothing will be found, and you will hear nothing more of it.

When we moved from Tipton to Hebert springs 4 grade I picked out the meanest kid in that grade and started the fight. He finished it but that was the absolute only fight I had that year.

Why do you keep insulting Africans who are really from Africa. They are completely different kinds of people than the American blacks who have never even been to Africa. All people with darker skin are not all the same. Even real africans don't like American blacks.

While I don't disagree with your premise, I do disagree with the African verbage.
