Earthquake: 3.5 magnitude tremor jolts L.A.

A magnitude 3.5 earthquake was reported Sunday night about a half mile from View-Park Windsor Hills in South Los Angeles, according to the U.S. Geological

The temblor occurred at 9:17 p.m. Pacific time and occurred at a depth of 6 miles, according to the USGS.

Although tremors were felt across large swaths of Southern California, the epicenter was located inside the boundaries of the Kenneth Hahn State Recreation Area, about eight miles west of downtown Los Angeles.

The area around Baldwin Hills is also the site of oil fields -- leaving some to speculate on social media that the earthquake owed to heavy drilling in the area.

But Dr. Lucy Jones, a USGS seismologist, wrote on Twitter that the quake occurred near the Newport-Inglewood fault and at a depth "way below the oil fields."

"The focal mechanism matches the Newport Inglewood fault which was producing [earthquakes] long before we were pumping oil," Jones wrote.

The epicenter was about 2,000 feet from that of a magnitude 2.5 earthquake that was reported at 4:35 p.m., making the smaller quake a foreshock that typically precedes larger seismic activity.

In response, the Los Angeles Fire Department went into earthquake mode, with firefighters sending out teams to survey for possible damage across the city.

As of 9:25 p.m., no damage was reported on account of the earthquake, said LAFD spokesman Shawn Lenske.

Ha! I knew there was a reason they were making a big deal out of a 3.5. The big bad fracking/drilling boogeyman.

That is the same fault line that the huge destructive Long Beach earthquake happened on in 1933. I remember my Aunt talking about it. Her house was damaged but not destroyed as she was far enough away from the epicenter.

My Dad was a little boy in the back yard with his father, he said they both slid down the yard and were followed by the backyard bench (how terrifying especially for a six year old!). He said the real lesson that people were already forgetting by the 1960's was that EVERY SINGLE SCHOOL in Long Beach fell down but because it was on a weekend, no children were lost. If it had been during the week the majority of the cities school children would have been injured or killed. For quite awhile afterwards the building codes were reflected in trying to make schools safe but over time the lessons were put aside and at least for awhile, the rules became more lax (we also know a lot more about earthquake building than we did back then too).

Neither here nor there.
You got it. Because everyone knows, throwing money at algore will make it all stop and ending fracking will make the earthquakes go away.

Look for more and more stories about quakes being fracking related (not natural) all in the name of saving gaia and so they can carbon tax the hell out of us! Unfortunaely I see a good many members buying this story hook lie and sinker, it's the late 80's early 90's all over again when the indoctrination of global warming was stepped up.

Quakes and other natural disaster type activity will be on the rise, the past 75 years was not the norm.
