$20 WEEKLY PREP CHALLENGE--1st QUARTER REVIEW

When I started this exercise, my goal was to see how much in the way of prep food I could put away for $20 week. To do this, I had to figure out some totals to shoot for so I would have a framework for buying preps. In my household there are two adults, no children. I've looked at a lot of info and refined things over the years, but the amounts in bold type are the amounts that I think we would need for a year. The amounts listed below are the amounts that my $20 week would have purchased through 13 weeks, or the first quarter of the year. I don't think I can cover 2 people for 1 year on that $20 week, but it looks like I could cover us for 7-8 months on that amount. Before I get criticism, let me point out that the amounts are for eating only, not preserving food in any form and not growing a garden. Let's see how I did:

500 LBS GRAINS and 200 LBS GRAIN PRODUCTS--
20 lbs flour
5 lb cornmeal
3 lb oats
20 lb rice
14 lb pasta
30 packages ramen noodles
4 lb pancake mix
5 boxes cereal
2 boxes granola bars
3 boxes instant oatmeal
13 cornbread mix
4 rice/pasta side dishes

15 LB SUGAR
none yet

50 LB DRY BEANS
7 lb

275 CANS FRUIT
26 cans

50 CANS BEANS
9 cans

300 CANS VEGGIES
60 cans

50 CANS TOMATOES
11 cans

200 CANS MEATS
40 cans

250 CANS PREPARED MEALS (SOUPS, CHILI, PASTA, etc)
47 cans

50 CANS REGULAR SOUPS
22 cans

12 JARS PEANUT BUTTER
4 jars

10 20qt BOXES POWDERED MILK
2 boxes

48 CANS EVAP MILK
5 cans

10 LB SALT
3 lb

6 LARGE INSTANT POTATOES
1 box + 4 potato mixes (AuGratin, etc)

50 MAC & CHEESE
8 boxes

36 SPAGHETTI SAUCE
9 jars

52 DESSERTS
21

VARIOUS ITEMS
2 ketchup
2 mayo
2 pickles
4 64-oz juice
2-100 ct tea bags
2-48 oz bottles oil
1 small solid crisco
48 oz syrup
2 lb yeast
2 boxes poptarts
2 18oz grape jelly

I think that is quite a lot for $260. That should be at least 2-3 months of food for one person, so I'm quite happy with the results so far.

I hope I am doing two things with these threads--1) helping you to stockup using sales and 2) making you think about the specific food goals that you need. I'm certainly learning a lot.

WOW! That is impressive prudentwatcher. A great idea nearly anyone should be able to do. Just goes to show, there's no excuse for not being prepped.

PW: Nice job.

As a reminder you can easily make your own pancake mix.

Get a grain mill -- the 'Porkert' is a nice inexpensive one.
Buckwheat does not look like wheat, and many alergic folks are not sensitive to Buckwheat.
