The Minnesota Department of Health is monitoring one person in the state for possible Ebola and following up with at least 26 other people who have traveled from West African countries affected by Ebola.
The information was given to reporter Jessica Miles from our sister station KSTP in the Twin Cities during a press conference Monday.
Health officials wouldn't comment on any specifics, but say most of the potential cases are in Hennepin County.
Mayo Clinic in Rochester is one of four hospitals in Minnesota that would serve as a treatment facility if Ebola does arrive in the state. We contacted Mayo to find out if anybody is currently being treated that that could have Ebola. We have not yet heard back.
Gov. Dayton says there is no reason for alarm as state ramps up Ebola monitoring in the state.
Minnesota health officials are now providing more detail to their plans for monitoring travelers from countries battling Ebola.
Their new framework calls for quarantine only when a traveler has treated an Ebola patient and been exposed to the virus. In such a case, the traveler would be restricted to their home.
Any traveler exposed to Ebola would be banned from public transit and mass gatherings.
And anyone coming into Minnesota from an Ebola-affected country would get twice-daily monitoring by the Minnesota Department of Health.
Travelers would have to keep a log of all their activities and the people they come in contact with for the 21-day period that Ebola incubates.
About 10 people arrive each week from the West African nations. Minnesota has one of the largest Liberian communities in the U.S.
ABC 6 News will continue to monitor this story and bring you reports tonight at 5:00 and 6:00.
