We've been cleaning, tossing and decluttering. We emptied about 7 plastic shoeboxes and 2 large totes. Next is the garage. Eek!
We were hoping to get the greenhouse painted but it's way too windy so we'll wait. It's also supposed to rain tomorrow and Tuesday. Gosh I hope it does!
Praying for moldy and everyone.
Nomifyle, you're right about the month flying by!

Our drought just keeps going and going and.......What we need is a tropical system that comes right up through the center of our state to break it. We have a 50% chance of rain, Tuesday, but that will probably change as that day approaches just like it does every time. They give out rain in our forecast, but nothing develops. We are so tired of trying to keep everything watered. We're now having to use community water to water everything with. All our tanks and barrels have almost run dry again, and I don't want to use it down to nothing, since it is our emergency water source.

We haven't had any rain to speak of either. DH put some ashes from the woods stove in one of the raised beds and they were still hot and it caused a big blaze, completely burned up the raised bed. I told him there was a burn ban going on.

so I've been wanting to go to dollar tree and finally made it today. Then I couldn't remember why I wanted to go. I did get two containers of whole shelf stable milk for 1.25. they had a big jug of Downey and I asked the price and she said 3.00, I go it too. I went up and down the isles trying to remember what I wanted. I put a few things in the basket and ended up spending 25.00.

Another lazy day, the pastor and his wife have been on vacation, so we have a pastor in training that did the sermon this morning. He did very well. I considered skipping but decided that I need to support the church and their endevors so I went and was glad.

Been sunny, mild and dry down here. Good for catching up on some much-needed painting around the place.

No deals to speak of this week, so no grocery run...but that's fine, since there isn't anywhere to put more. ;)

Did get in an order for 4 dozen socks and some more t-shirts that were on sale.

It’s extremely dry here too. Rain is supposed to be in our forecast for Tuesday also, I’m hoping for a good soaking rain for us and everyone else needing it.

I‘ve been needing to get more bed sheets so I finally ordered 2 sets, they should be here in the next day or so.

DH is planning on building some more shelving in our small basement pantry and taking the metal shelves out in hopes that we can organize things better and have more storage room. Not sure when he’ll get started but probably soon since he bought plywood the other day.

We got a nice surprise last night. Cary has a cousin on his dad's side who lives in Dallas. He's also retired. He has been in Boston visiting with his daughter (a transplant for her DH's job). She decided to come back home with him for a couple of weeks. He called Cary last night and asked if we wanted to go out to eat with them, tonight. They were staying in Tupelo, before they finished their journey on to Dallas. Cary said yes, so here we go. I'm doing extra cleaning today getting ready for their visit, tonight.

Cary found this 3rd cousin online while doing his genealogy on his dad's side of the family a few years ago. They've talked on the phone many times, and he came for a visit last year. We've never met his daughter, so I'm a bit nervous with her being from Boston. Lots of liberals up that way. They are also Mormon, which doesn't matter to us, except I don't want to stick my foot in my mouth over something. I told Cary to stay away from conversations having to do with religion and politics. LOL!

Off to dust, sweep, and mop...........etc.

Hope y'all have a nice visit!

We're hoping for some much needed rain today. The forecast is calling for a 60% chance today through the afternoon, then overnight tonight with severe thunderstorms possible. Like Sherree, we've had forecasts for rain that seem to go around us, or don't amount to much more than sprinkles.

Thanks.

We have rain and severe thunderstorms with possible tornadoes in our forecast for tonight and tomorrow. I'll believe it when I see it. Like you, they forecast rain, but it never develops where we are. If it does rain, it's just a sprinkle. Not enough to break our drought. It's been over 3 months without any significant or measurable rainfall, here.

Placed an order for elderly dog, he's almost out of b12 liquid.
My sister brought over soup so we'll have that for lunch. We share food, it's so nice.
I just want to sit in my chair and listen to the rain!
Prayers for all of you! :)

I love Rural King too, closest thing we have here is Tractor Supply, but they are not the same. Closest one to us in 500 miles, so we only go when we go to Illinois to visit DH's children, but that has been almost 4 years now. I doubt we'll make that trip again.

Tractor Supply is what we have in small town, but we have Scrugg's Farm and Ranch is big town. No Rural King for us, either. I don't even know where the closest one of those would be. Maybe, closer to Memphis.

We have several Tractor Supply near us they are ok but they don't carry near the stuff that Rural King does.. I got fleece lined tights for $4.49. I grabbed three different colors navy, black and dark gray at that price..too good to pass up.... They had cotton flannel shirts for $15.... Just an example of their prices...and a free popcorn machine when you come in the door... yum

We picked up our USDA commodities today. DH wasn't feeling well so I drove. His blood pressure is wacky and he's had a headache. Please pray for him. I drove to pick up the commodities.

We are signed up as two separate households, but the boxes are never the same. One box had a package of chicken, the other had boxed drinks, like the kind children drink. Each box had a five pound bag of potatoes and I got a 5# bag at walmart, not knowing, now to figure out what to do with 15#s of potatoes. The pickings were slim, but I'm greatful for what we get.

One thing I had forgotten to get at Walmart when I went on friday was potatoes, which is why I got some today. They did have the sliced ham pieces that I've been getting the last couple of months, they were out on friday. I looked for the rotissorie chickens but they were still being cooked, they cost 6.97, I won't be getting one unless I'm feeling particularly flush with money, LOL. They do have pulled chicken for 8.97 for 16 oz. I might get that again some time, not today. I have been getting a little cash back when I go to wm as a way to pull a few dollars here and there out of the bank.

I was hoping I would get my va check early like I did last month, but not today, it normally comes on the last day of the month. Its not a lot it but makes a difference. I'm greatful, I have so many blessings.

Walmart had nylon tank tops on sale for $3. I bought 3 on Friday and another $3 today. I would have loved to have had them for the summer, but no matter they will be great to wear under a long sleeved flannel shirt that needs something under it, but not something bulky.

Our dinner out with Cary's cousin and his daughter went really well. We didn't get off into politics or religion, so thankful for that. The daughter did mention that she was the weird one in Boston, because she had several guns, had a wood burning heater, cans veggies, and taught her kids to be survivors. My first instinct was that she was a Conservative Republican after all, but then she went on to say that she and her DH had a house on Martha's Vineyard and one in Boston. That sorta set me back as far as her being conservative (doubtful), but I asked NO questions other than if she knew another cousin of Cary's on his mom's side of the family who also lives on Martha's Vineyard. She didn't know them.

All in all, we all had a great time, and we invited them back the next time they were traveling through.

Still no rain, but it is expected to arrive early afternoon. I'm still doing laundry, today, and hanging the load on my drying racks. Not much else going on, today.

The freeze almost ended our growing season. The cherry tomatoes in the flower bed on the south side if the house did not freeze. But the summer stuff in the gardens is gone. I have a few turnip greens and snow peas that the drought didn't kill. I may plant more turnips. We got a good rain last night. It was certainly needed.

I canned the last of the field peas last week. I canned 6 pints of tomatoes yesterday. Now I have to find somewhere to put them. I have been wondering about making persimmon jam. I have never had it, but there are lots of persimmons this year.

I am trying to straighten up the house. I have some things to donate and other stuff to throw out. One thing I need to find a place for my paper bags of wild herbs. They are just on my sewing table and they need a new home. I would like to sew some.

Glad you had a nice dinner and visit with Cary's kin last night, Sherree!

We ended up getting .6" of rain last night, and had a brief period of pretty brisk (60mph) winds that quit as quick as they started. Lots of lightning in the area, and some places got more rain than we did. We've got another chance for rain later on in the week, so we'll see.

We still haven't received a drop, YET. It's getting close according to our local radar. I just hope it holds together, and doesn't break up, before it gets here. We've been under a wind advisory since yesterday, but today, the wind is really bad. Warnings that we may lose power and possible tornadoes. Like you, I think we have more chances of rain over the weekend, if I'm remembering right. Today is the best chance, though.

I hope you get the good kind of rain and enough to do some good. We were under a tornado watch for a few hours last night and there were a few spotted, but I don't think any touched down. Hope there aren't any over your way. It's not quite as windy now as it was earlier this morning, but still getting gusts of 25mph.

Apparently we got some rain last night, the ground looked damp this morning, but it did not wake me up.

DH is feeling better this morning so he went to the VA by himself for his monthly INR check.

Its 61 outside, I tried to get a fire going in the wood stove, although its not cold in the house. It didn't get going although I didn't try very hard. Instead of my usual shorts I have on long pants, also one of my new tank tops, my arms are not cold. I need to go out to the she shed and look for some long sleeve tops to wear around the house.

I'm sorting through the commodities and my recent walmart purchases, I need to put them all away in the pantry but need to reorganize to make room for them.

I was off DE for about ten days but got back on it. so now my coffee includes my collegen, DE and Kerrygold butter. The butter kills the chalky taste of the DE. Second cup just butter.

The sun is shinning. The tree outside my window has pretty much dropped all of its leaves, but I just noticed some green leaves popping out, strange.

Trying to get things ready at home for my surgery. We are still cooking down sorghum....cooked it about 8 hours Saturday, then over night in roasters (volume decreased from 20 gallons of juice to less than 8 at this point). Need to finish it so I can clean up all the stickiness!

Need to clean out some of the freezers so we can butcher about 5 or so turkeys this weekend. Luckily we have friends helping for a turkey.

Wow! We're getting a flood right now! So good, and I'm so thankful. All our rain catchment systems should be filling back up to overflowing about now. Pretty strong wind gusts, too. We've got a big limb down in our front yard, but it's not the size Cary would have to cut up to move.

I went out to my she shed to look for more fat clothes. I found two nice robes, my favorite one has a hole in the sleeve so I wanted something that's not airy. One robe belonged to me and one was my mothers. I like them both. The purple one that is mine is a pull over and will be cozy to sleep in and its nice and big. And I found a couple of jackets that I made years ago, I also created the pattern for them. They are still in decent shape, light weight but long sleeve, much needed living in New Orleans. I lost the patterns I made and all my supplies in katrina, although I did replace a lot but I've not sewn since then.

I was particularly looking for a green plaid long sleeve flannel shirt and I found it, so happy about that. After I lost weight several years back I gave away a ton of my fat clothes but not all of them just in case, what a blessing. I blessed other people and also blessed myself. I also found two pair of flannel lined satin pjs. I know I had more and also night gowns, but haven't found those yet. The flannel is warm and the satin makes it easy to turn over in the bed, although I haven't slept in a bed in about two years. Thank God for my lift chair. Maybe I need to get a back up one and put it in the cabin, LOL.

Now I have to wash all these clothes, not matter, its a blessing to have them.

I'm planning on making Au Gratin potatoes tonight, and I had the idea of using a drained can of roast beef in with it, instead of ham that I usually use. Would that be a good idea, or not? I'm trying to learn more ways of using all this store bought canned roast beef I've stocked up on.

Absolutely nothing going on, today.

Tomorrow morning, Cary has to go to big town to have his CT scan done on his lungs to make sure there isn't any cancer. If the scan is clear, he won't have to have another one. That part of all these scans will be done. He's still waiting on an appointment for a scan on his kidney to make sure there's no sign of cancer returning there.

We finally got some of that precious liquid called rain yesterday! We were so happy to see it and are hoping to get more soon.

Our plans for the week changed somewhat, we were going to take a day trip either Monday or today but we were needed for a few extra days of babysitting. Suits me, as I‘ve been having a fibro flare up and not feeling up to it anyway.

The 2 new sheet sets arrived yesterday so they‘ve been washed, dried, folded and put away. I’m planning on giving the refrigerator a good cleaning today and making a list of what needs to be used soon and what I want to make to use up said items.

SB~I’d be interested in ways to use the canned roast beef to as I’ve bought some but haven’t used it yet. We may just have to do “experiments“ and see what we come up and share the results. Prayers that all goes well for Cary.

moldy~You continue to amaze me with all you do.

Well, I didn't like the roast beef mixed in with the au gratin potatoes. Cary liked it ok, but I won't fix that again. Smoked ham is much better. I've used the roast beef twice, now, and neither time was to my liking. I think I'll be saving it for dog food or an extreme emergency food. It just doesn't taste like my home cook roast beef. I didn't expect it to, but I thought it would taste better than it does. Everyone is different, though.

I made fried cabbage and purple hull peas with garlic bread to go with it. I ate fried cabbage.

I was wondering how it might work to make a sandwich spread out of it like ham salad!?

Sherree, this was store bought roast beef, correct? I don't care for the texture of the store bought canned meat either. I do can chunks of beef roasts - whatever is on sale at the time. Cut the raw meat into cubes, make a weak broth from a packet of onion soup mix, bring it up to a boil, and drop the chunks of meat into the broth and let them simmer just long enough to seal the outside of the meat. Then I pack them in a pint jar, add the onion soup 'broth' to the shoulder, then can the pint jars of beef chunks for 75 minutes at 10# pressure. We use it for quite a few things - beef stew, beef and noodles, beefy vegetable soup, beef and gravy over rice, etc... Sealing the outside of the meat by dropping it in the boiling broth for a short time seems to keep it less 'mushy'. Like you, I prefer ham in my scalloped potatoes, although smoked sausage is also pretty good :)

This week has been kind of crappy, but I'm hoping things take a turn for the better soon. I had a hypertensive crisis and ended up in the ED; thank goodness the hospital was nearly full so I was treated and released instead of having to stay - helped to be a nurse, and to have a husband who had worked EMS in the ED and can promise the staff they'll monitor me. I'm off work until Halloween (or until my bp stabilizes) and will likely be changing MDs soon - daughter works on some of the medical folks in her town, and is going to see if she can hook me up with one of them. And my work schedule has been changed so I'm working with a different group of co-workers - the QUIET ones. And speaking of work; I've got to go over and grab some paperwork, so I'd better get going!

Take care, all; stay safe out there!

Thanks for the info on canning my own! I've looked at the chunks of beef and roasts at the grocery store, but they're just too expensive. I can never seem to catch either of those on sale. The last time I looked, a small pack of beef chunks was $16. I might get one pint out of that, once it's cooked. Small beef roasts are about the same or higher in price. I've got around 30, 12oz cans of the store bought stuff, so I need to try and find a way to use it that's agreeable, or just let it sit in the pantry and spoil. I won't be buying anymore. I sure hope that the Keystone beef chunks are much better.

I'm having issues with my BP, again, too. It seems I'm going to have to go to my PCP to get it checked out. 146/84 this morning. That's about the same for the last 2 weeks or longer. I can't think of anything that would be causing it to spike up again. I check it, before I come to the forum, cause everyone knows all that goes on here causes an increase in BP, LOL.

Renee and Sherree, I hope you feel better!
I got a stack of broken buckets and some trashed electronics hauled to the recycle with the regular trash this morning. Glad to get rid of them.
Husband finally felt well enough to drive the tractor and haul up 750 pounds of sand for the barn. I still had to shovel it in the stalls, but it would have taken me 4 days to shovel that much by hand off the sand bar.
Looking for a better internet provider. HughesNet has gone from mediocre to not working at all half the time.

Renee~Prayers up that you’ll get your health issues solved soon. I hope you feel better.

SB~Is the canned beef you bought the one that Sam’s sells? If so, I’m getting concerned because thats what I bought too! Maybe I can use it up in soup LOL. Prayers up for you too that your BP settles to where it should be.

Speaking of BP, I’m sure mine is going to be on the rise too. My mother is coming to visit for a few weeks. So y’all send up prayers and good thoughts for me please, I’ll need every one of them.

I got the refrigerator cleaned and organized better, now if I can get DH to put things where they belong instead of stuck in just anywhere. It seems to make sense only to me to put pickled type items together, dairy type, meats in the lowest coldest drawer! There weren’t too many science experiments thank goodness but I did find a half pack of Oscar Meyer beef bologna pushed all the way to the back of a drawer. DH only eats bologna when we have fresh tomatoes from the garden so I know it’s been there awhile. I managed to get a list of things that need to be used soon and menus to use them in. I spent a little time in the pantry after granddaughter went home and tossed a few bottles of salad dressing that was way more out of date than I care to use. I should really just make them as I need them but the convenience sure is nice at times.
