I made a fast run to HEB (New Braunfels TX) this morning.
I was shocked at luncheon meat prices! Store brand, 15 oz package used to be $7, now $11.

I’ve been trying Hill Country Fare more lately. I think the lunch meat tastes fine.

Also, my daughter discovered that the Hill Country Fare brand breakfast sausage can be substituted for hamburger in some meals because it doesn’t have alot if spice. It’s so much cheaper than ground beef.

Genetic upgrades to wheat meant to increase yield accidentally increased a substance called gliadin. Gliadin consumption causes the feeling of more hunger.

Going into a period of mass shortage means you should be looking at dry beans as a source for protein and because they can be sprouted for vitamin C. I've also grown beans from food-stock beans off the shelf.

It's time to budget for basic protein. Yeast bread (sourdough) can be jiggered to increase protein, but the gliadin problem remains.
You can also use dry beans as seed stock

I’ve done it with small red beans and navy beans.

I tested the germination before I used them and they were in the 60-65% range, so I planted them thicker. They produced ok.

Depends on how old they are.

I went to Kroger after work today, dead tired but it had to be done.

I’m tellin ya, I searched high and low for meat items that weren’t priced so high, that I felt secure enough to buy.
It’s terrible.

Even pork is getting to be high!
There are sales posted, but it’s almost as of prices have been jacked up then they’ve tried to make the item look like a “great deal” just because they’ve slapped on a sale.

Even Kroger brand items are bad, across the board.
One example is their frozen French fries…I’m just grabbing this example out of thin air.
They have been 1.79$ for years. All varieties.

Now, every style of frozen potatoes is 2.99$/bag.

Just extrapolate this example to everything in the store.
Indiana area, north of Indy.

To add: we always buy Pinot noir to have at home once/twice weekly.
Yes, DH is a wine snob of sorts, and I do like good wine too…we only buy the good stuff for holidays in the last few years due to price….but a particular brand we use for our wine night dinner at home, has always ALWAYS been around 14$…. It’s not bad, so why not, right?

It’s now 18$….

Even the tougher, stringier cuts of beef roasts I’ve only experimented with (lately) because they were cheaper, were ALL marked at around 18-22$…, for a cut that wouldn’t even feed the two of us after it slow cooked down into a tough little ball…and I was t raised to be a picky eater, either. I’ll work with something until I get it right. I think it’s called arm roast or shoulder roast?

Even those were too expensive.
:(

Recently received an email from Wild Fork foods.

For a limited time any new customer who spends a minimum of $100 can get a free annual membership. That's worth $30. However this offer doesn't apply to existing or past members. This means you can get unlimited free shipping for a small order amount. With today's meat prices it's easy to to rack up $100.

I personally have made many online mail orders with them. Even in the hottest days of Summer everything was still frozen rock hard when delivered. Their cardboard boxes are foam lined and packed with dry ice.

The meat is top quality and prices are competitive. If online shopping is important to you, consider their offer.

Disclaimer: I have no financial connections of any kind with them except as a satisfied customer.

Grabbed some Orowheat whole wheat bread for a PB sandwich tonigjt. Ate the sandwich and it was the last of the open loaf. I looked at the date on the bread. JANUARY 23, 2022. IT'S SEPTEMBER!

Bread-NINE MONTHS OLD!

I dont check the date on bread after I buy it. i only thow it out when it gets moldy.
But they MUST be doing somthing to preserve it!

It wasn't moldy, it wasnt stale or hard!
You only need five ingredients to make bread. Keep it simple and great taste. Now comes store bought bread. You will need a magnifying glass to read all the ingredients stuck in that four inches of space. It is totally indestructible and I am sure does wonders for your insides.

Our Kroger had no disposable pans. An employee said they are having trouble getting them in because of an aluminum shortage. I don't normally use them, but a family member isn't expected to make it through the night, and I wanted to send a meal today for the close family gathering and for the meal following the funeral.

I’m so sorry! I’ll keep your family in prayer.

I’d help you with a dish to take over, if I were closer!
I’m really good at whipping up “solace comfort food”

I'm sorry about your family member.
I know this isn't going to help now, but maybe in the future --- our $1.25 Tree has every kind of aluminum disposable pan you would ever need.

In central georgia my casserole favorite, (tomato soup) has doubled in price or is not in stack. When did tomato soup get to be more expensive than cream of mushroom or chicken noodle. If you see tomato soup on the shelves at a reasonable price buy it.
All tomato products going up or become unavailable. Tomato shortage. I know our garden crop failed.

I bake my own. Four days is all I can get before it goes to the chickens. Nine months is insane. That’s not bread it’s just a loaf of preservatives.

and by the way my friend, how do you know what southerns like, you don't live in the south, you live in Texas

Texas is in the south (at least the eastern half.) It’s Florida that’s not.

Just my $0.60 (Two cents from 1913 adjusted for inflation):

Generally, most (but not all) Texans I have known do not consider Texas part of "The South", and although in casual conversations they may talk about Texas being in the south when pressed they draw a distinction between "The South" and "Texas". Sometimes when they start talking about "The South" they start transitioning to phrases like the "Deep South". The description I heard the most when I was a kid was "Texas is Texas". Although these days, generally the younger Texans and those that are transplants seem to draw less of a distinction, if any.

As a kid I was raised that Texas may be in the south, it is not part of The South. Texas is Texas.

Talked with my CSA (Community Supported Agriculture) grower for our Beef and Pork. He was telling me feed prices have more than doubled and tripled since last year when we bought 1/2 a steer and 1/2 a hog. Last year a bale of good quality hay was going for $9/bale, up $4 from the year before....that same bale this year is going for $19/bale!! I don't recall exactly what he said his grain costs were but they had tripled as well.

We're still getting a deal over store bought meat in both price and quality, but I can imagine that large commercial growers are getting totally hammered by their costs and seriously hurting the farmers/ranchers bottom line. He also mentioned concern about next year and the impact of the drought on hay production and how that is going to impact growers. Our grower is a "small holding" and only produces a half a dozen cattle and hogs a year mostly for themselves and immediate family and friends.

Trying to hang out with the cool kids.
As I am preparing my weekly Walmart delivery grocery list here is an observation...
they will NOT deliver any stewed tomatoes. Doesn't matter what brand or size.

But the third party SCALPERS on Walmart will ship to me for $13.98 EACH can and $16.99 delivery fee!
I'm not feeling too good about what may happen in the next few weeks.

I wonder if there are any kickbacks for such an "arrangement" and if so, is that illegal? To suspend delivery from Wal-art, but delivery IS available for the same thing from a third party price gouger?

Really? No, it's not illegal. Its called caveat emptor. There is noth8ng in the Constitution that guarantees you the right to get the groceries of your choice delivered!
