At a yard sale on Friday I bought 2 nice Universal hand-crank meat grinders. They look almost the same but one is a #1 and one is a #2. Both had extra cutters. They were $5 each and looked maybe unused.
We already had a good hand-crank meat grinder that was fine but for the price I thought these would make good trade items if things ever did collapse.

Repotted some basil starts, this stuff is very prolific! Clipped some blackberry stems and got them potted.
Harvested a large bag of bok choy, letting some of it get bigger.
Sent in a Walmart order, pickup tomorrow.
We've got the green house framed, he's framing the window and then a trip to Lowe's for a sheet of siding and polycarbonate. We should be at 300.00 for materials with extra for 2 water barrels, mulch for the floor and a few other odds and ends. So 400.00 when finished.
Next up is chickens, I really miss mine!

Thought you might find worth in my observations after eating out of storage for 7 wks. While hospitalized for 3 weeks my hubby did not shop once and for the last 4 weeks we have eaten out of storage. I have found that I need to label things a little differently for my hubby. He had some difficulty finding things. As a result my pantry was a bit messy when I returned home! The frozen meals that I had put together for extra busy days has been a God send for both of us. We did not experience any food boredom but we still have fresh fruit in the orchard and fresh vegetables in garden. Overall it was successful!
Yesterday we moved our green house that is on sleds to the "Winter Spot" which gets more winter sun than the summer spot. A little worried that our spring plant dates may be later in 2022 and stuff my have to hang out in green house a little later that usual. Hubby is adding some extra shelves just in case.
Sweet potatoes are hardening off and peanuts to be dug this week.

Have a great week! And fear not! I know Who is in control!

Thank you! Still a wrinkle or two to overcome but moment by moment right?! And just a side note...as a retired nurse I would like to say that my confidence in the medical community is almost nonexistent! I am with Moldy on everyone who doesn't own a good herbal medicine book and first aid book should buy them and read them!

Yes, I've been studying them, but as I keep whining, I'm not a medical person. I've been trying to work on my attitude, but it's slow going.

If I had wanted to become a nurse or doctor, I would've studied medicine in college! I have zero problems growing herbs or making and using herbal teas, but when it comes to figuring out dosages, studying anatomy, or having to culture bacteria, analyze blood under a microscope, or other lab work, I'm out!

I need to develop a barter relationship with a good nurse and a dentist.

Yes, I know. Shut up and hit the books.

Thank you for starting the thread, briches!

Good to see you back, Philkar!

As a not-quite-retired-yet nurse, I don't have a whole lot of faith in the medical community either. I've downloaded several Herbal Medicine books from Kindle Unlimited, and have been doing a copy/paste/printout of information that sounds useful - have also picked up a few hardcopy books in that line as well when the info seems worth the price.

Glad you're doing well Philkar! How cool to have a mobile greenhouse! I agree medical care is declining. I have some herbal books, Rosemary Gladstar. I also like Rain Country's youtube channel. I bought some cheap notebooks to start putting together recipes in one place. ST's Elderberry syrup recipe will be first. : )

We've been busy this month, so I haven't accomplished much. I did put more apples up. I have put away summer stuff, and got out ( most of) fall stuff. I've done some more organizing in the pantry. It's amazing how quickly a room goes from organized to mess! I took a load of clothes and varous stuff to the GW. This week I need to can some potatoes. They're close to sprouting. Should thaw and can some chicken to make room for a turkey too. Today I made a big pot of chili for this week. That's about it.

Praying for a good week!

So, so good to see you back here, philkar!! I didn’t see this thread until after we had messaged, lol.

We scored five blueberry bushes for $20 last week at the end of our market and got those planted. Also have a hazelnut tree that we need to get planted in the next couple of days.

We’re moving stuff and organizing in several different rooms, so everything is crazy right now. Our youngest son is getting married two weeks from yesterday and they’ve decided to stay here for several months at least. We’re very happy about that. :)

Still adding to preps. Pork roast was on sale so I got 10lbs and turned it into posole. Yielded 12 quarts pressure canned. Wife got an order of AAA and AA batteries in. Made a Dollar Tree run for a dozen candles, anti fungal and triple antibiotic, and hygiene stuff. Also got 6 extra pairs of readers.

I'm noticing canned goods going on sale in my AO. Each week it seems a different brand is discounted.

Problem is I found I have to watch the cans. I recently got a few cans of organic veggies. Cheap no, but price ok, so I got a few. At home I really looked at the cans. The metal is thin, like so thin I doubt the can will last as long term storage. I wouldn't trust them.

We are still working on the chicken coop and my moving from the small shed to the bigger one I built. The smaller one is being used by the wife as a place for her gardening tools / etc. So I have been building shelves for her to store things.

We also finally got the concrete done on the chicken coop. We poured 4500 pounds of concrete in the last week. 2000 of that I did by myself on Saturday. I still feel it. LOL

note too bad for being 58.....

The dog is driving me crazy. I am too old for a puppy. I had to get her a shock collar because she ran away from me and I couldn't catch her. The directions were printed microscopically and not available online, and thank goodness dh could figure them out, because I could not. he was supposed to watch her last week for me to go to the store. She ate half of a wicker chair, a pair of his shoes, chewed one of my shoes and threw the other one in her water bucket (I had put mine where she supposedly couldn't reach them) and demolished a couple paper plates all over the house. It took me over an hour to clean up her mess.
Between walking her for her potty breaks, and letting her run 3 times a day with the shock collar,I'm averaging a little over 4 hours a day with her. I hope she will settle down soon. I need to get some work done.
I had to make a fuel run this morning so I combined other errands. Gas went up 20 cents a gallon since last week, it took almost $50 to fill up the truck
50 pound mineral blocks doubled in price since back in the spring when I stocked up, now they're $10 each.
Dreading doing my WM pickup tomorrow...

I didn’t make it to the Mennonite store last week, maybe this week. I’m still working on my stock of herbs and spices but it’s looking better.

DH decided last week to go ahead and take care of fertilizing our main hayfield instead of waiting until next spring. Price was up about 1/3 since last time and from his conversation with the guy at the co-op, it’s getting harder to come by and will get worse. He also went to a cattle auction out of town this past weekend and stopped by a Walmart and decided to check on canning lids, yay, they had wide mouth lids. We’ve been looking for some all summer so I’m happy to finally get them.

I’ve got some sage, corned beef hash, pecans and instant potatoes on the way.

I've been going to a free food drop lately and there was one today. A lot of the time it really is stuff well past its prime but today was good. Lots of bell peppers and winter squashes that I will freeze dry. I really need to get some beans canned and some wood split but I'm just not in the mood for either. Plus the few minutes I was outside unloading groceries today the mosquitoes about ate me alive. Guess they're prepping for winter too...

Don’t let the Piss Ants get you down…
Got bulk packs of AAA and AA batteries, put up 8 lbs of dried pintos into Mylar vacuum sealer bags, got two 5 lb buckets of a rice mixture @ Costco (sale) which will go into immediately use, as it contains brown rice, but it looked good! Also saw a good deal on a Case Trimmer and got it (for
Reloading) and 5K large pistol primers.

Finally got my USA made regular mouth jar Amish made canning lids from Lehmans.com. Pricey most definitely, but I got them. I plan to be daring and try them out in the pressure canner later this week. Note as of my order he's not making wide mouth lids.

Jeff B was that rice Ralston Family Farms? They make a Natures Blend rice that is wonderful. They are friends of mine. All their rice is so good.

We got a few odds and ends. I have a running list of things we should get. I got a strainer and a tea ball for my herbs. We are working on shop supplies too. Added oil and some cleaners. I have some herb books on my list I need to get.

My chickens have slowed down laying. I may have to give them more light. I wish I had a couple more solar lights like I have. I bought 2 to go with the one I bought originally. But one of the new ones doesn't work well. The quality seems to have declined since I purchased the first one.

Found that a 10# bag of GV chicken breasts goes into 5 qt jars nicely. I think I will do my next batch with lemon pepper seasoning. Then maybe rosemary and garlic.

Purchased 2 big shelf units from WM to keep my boxes of canning jars off the floor. Now I can see what I have, and I won't worry if I don't have enough. I can also see the floor in the front bedroom again.

Reorganized my pantry of ingredients and condiments. Now I know I have 6 jars of peanut butter and 4 big bottles of Frank's hot sauce. With the news of possible food oil shortages on the horizon, I needed to take stock of what I have, and the emerging hole is Avocado oil. We use it the most, and I only have 2 bottles left. I bought my first tub of lard Sunday. Should I just keep it sealed in the blue tub or melt and put it into jars?

Hubby has spent most of our money fixing the electrical mess in our garage. This means a lot of stuff in the garage is ending up on the front porch and in the house. Now I have that clutter to deal with.

The good news about the garage project is that it got parts of some of my projects out where I can reach them. I only lack neodimium magnets to make my VAWT. I can fix my bike up now to install an electric motor. I can build the fly trap, chicken protein supplementer. And I now have my Powersource 1800 out so I can replace the batteries. Already have one of them on the way now.

I have to frame all of my energy projects to hubby as keeping cost down with his new hobby of welding. It takes a lot of electricity to weld. If I can defray that cost by setting up all my solar and wind to take some of our stuff off the grid, it will help him with his welding. Right?
;)

Edit: the stupid question mark keeps moving

Another great reason to prep. Last week, I lost my job. Was a Human Resources Manager making really good money. Did file for unemployment tho. We are gonna do just fine. And in a way, it was a blessing. Hubby has a good job. And this gives me time to spend with my parents that are in their 80's. They're keeping me busy taking them to doctor appointments and grocery shopping. Will get another job eventually, but will enjoy spending time with my folks. And thank goodness we have always kept up on preps. God has a plan. :-)

Little bits here and there. Picked up some extra deodorant today--it was BOGO. Picked up a couple of 2 lb bags of pinto beans at Aldis. It was cheaper to get a 2lb bag there than a 1lb bag anywhere else. Also picked up a couple more cans of peaches and a couple cream of chicken soups.

The big "to do" was to order a new canner gasket for my pressure canner. I wanted to make sure I had one in reserve just in case. The one that is on there now is pretty old.

Finished ordering Christmas gifts yesterday. Except for one gift (an edible one), I am finished with that.

Plugging away here too. Just got some more dog food and chicken feed from Tractor Supply. I also got a few pantry items - shopping the sales.
Starting tomorrow Food Lion has Progresso soups 4/$5 so will stock up some (more) on those.

While at the grocery store today I noticed a few areas that were low, but not out. Paper products were low. Soda and Gatorade was low. Canned veggies were sporadic -
Store was quite busy for a Tuesday afternoon.

Picked up another 20 lb propane tank...even though there is a thread on here about the rising price of propane, it was the same price as two years ago...? I won't complain :)
The chest freezer I moved into the house last weekend died...so I picked up an upright that fit the space better. Last one of that size in the store. Fortunately, no food was compromised.
Put in an order for more vacuum sealer bags, too.
Ever get the feeling you're forgetting something important, but you just can't put your finger on it?

I keep checking lists. Reading threads. Trying to project situations and adjusting as I go. But yes, I hate that feeling.

This week's haul. Actually this is the 2nd haul this week. The first one was 250 peppers and this one is 460. I only got a picture of the 2nd one.

These are ALL very hot peppers. They seem to do so much better in the SE GA than sweet peppers.

Our garden is almost like a jungle right now.

What a day... I needed 2 things at 2 stores. One thing was from Dollar Tree. I usually go shopping early before the crowds get out, but they don't open until 9 am so I waited til 9 to leave the house. Big sign on the door that they're temporarily opening at 11. Pooey!

The other thing I needed was ink cartridges for my printer which are only sold at WalMart. Nope. None. Pooey again.

So, I guess the prep for the day will be staying home and doing laundry and housecleaning. Pooey!

Here are a few pictures of the garden.

Note: the pvc is 5 feet tall. Many of the plants are above that mark. In the thin areas, they were cut back and are sweet peppers which did not grow as much as the hot peppers.

Most of my spending this week has been for Halloween candy - I likes the little goblins and ghouls that come to visit, I do; and I had some pretty good coupons to use at CVS for most of the candy :) Anything left over will be tucked away in the freezer to use in cookie baking over the winter - chopped up Snickers bars are pretty good used in place of chocolate chips in cookies (but you better have non-stick cookies sheets to bake 'em on!)

I did manage to sneak in some AAA batteries while I was loading up on candy at CVS - the store brand batteries were on sale buy one get one 50% off. I had the younger two grandsons with me and was trying to keep track of the youngest one so grabbed two 8 packs of batteries off the rack and turned to go to the checkout when the older one stopped me and pointed out that a 16 pack of batteries was actually cheaper than the two 8 packs - even with the 50% off. Out of the mouths of babes...

Some stores in the area appear to have bare spots, others that are the same name don't - kind of odd, I thought. Don't know if it's a stocking issue or shipping one. Aldi is missing a few things that I buy frequently, but none of those things are neccessities for us. I did notice the large cans of soup that Hubby likes were not in stock, but those are a convenience item, not a need.

They are finally cutting the corn across the road today so I have everything shut up tight and the kittens inside. I'll be glad to have it done - I don't like to waste time washing my windows until the crops are out of those fields.

Back to work tonight and tomorrow; then three days off, including Hallowe'en. The grandson that is in JFL will be going to a college football game on Saturday; the younger one and the grand-dog will be hanging out with me while daughter works on her rental house. The short person and I are going to go over and chop down some tall weeds for my co-worker Buddy, and rake any leaves he might have; then we are going to come back to my house and we will either pick up dropped ears in the field across the road or pick up the walnuts in the side yard. He's a hard worker - as long as you feed him  I'll save washing my windows for when I don't have his help

Finally started my first coal fire in cabin stove today yay! It's wonderful. Think of a hot burning oven over a slow going crockpot. I'm going to sleep in there now.
Horse is doing a tiny bit better each few days. It's going to be a ride.
Big doings tonight at Awana. Chili cook off!

I'm hearing one thing and one thing only....food! Learning from history with an economic implosion food becomes primary above almost anything else. While I have enough I keep on buying more. Spent $70 for close to 70 gravy and sauce mix packets, the type you add a cup of water bringing to a boil and making gravy. Picked up spaghetti sauce packets, pork gravy, chicken, brown and ham gravy mixes.

In addition while I have a lot of freeze dried hash browns in cartons as well as potato pearls and restaurant size scalloped potato type cartons and #10 cans of various potato products I'm putting away about 70 mashed potato packets. These are the type where you just add water [Hungry Jack brand] and don't need to add butter and milk as it has the milk solids included in the packet.

You can whip these up in minutes and use your gravy packets and then with canned veggies and meats you can whip up nice meals or casseroles.

Lot's of starches of course and in normal times I like to limit those as much as possible but when times are not normal things such as this are easy to prepare, requires minimal other resources and are made quickly.

DH and I took a self defence course. Ok so imagine DH and I, two overweight out of shape old farts surrounded by in shape millennials with an instructor who could probably kill us with his eyebrows. Hilarity ensued. We may have slowed the instructor down with our unique technique, he was laughing so hard.

It was fun.

I'm struggling. With the sudden dx of diabetes, over half of my preps are suddenly dangerous to me. And due to repeated illness over the last year, the financial buffer isn't there to just add a chunk of new things to the pantry. So each week, as I find things that work, I grab a bit more than I'll actually use so I can start the build up. It's a bit nerve wracking with the supply chain issues. I've got to get the three month supply built. And then I can go digging for good recipes for the every day things and start building the ingredients pantry.
And each step of the way, I also have to evaluate how I can slowly shift my son over. Because he has a kidney condition that pretty much guarantees diabetes at some point. And as I go through this, I find that reality is it would be much easier to have him already on the pathway so that the last switch over isn't something drastic.
So yeah, for the foreseeable future, my preps are food and plants.

I'm just now getting home from the hospital with Cary. He has been hospitilized since the 21st with sepsis, UTI, and pneumonia. It's been touch and go, but no ICU, thank God. Since I only had Cary's phone, I couldn't log in to the net to let anyone know. I never left his side at the hospital. Cary did PM Dennis, once he was able, since he knows how to log in to the net by phone. Cary didn't particurly ask for a prayer request thread, so Dennis apparantly didn't start one for him.

He's still going to have to take it easy for the next two weeks, and is still on oral antibiotics for another week. He's very weak, and is just now beginning to regain an appetite.

It's good to be home.
