A Missouri boy fatally shot an alleged thief with an arrow after catching the man trying to steal a tractor on a family friend’s property, authorities said Tuesday.

The unidentified juvenile, whose age has not been released, was walking toward a tree stand where he planned to hunt deer with a bow and arrows when he saw the suspected intruder stealing a lawn tractor and wood splitter from the property Friday afternoon, according to the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office.

The boy called his father and a confrontation ensued between the two adults, authorities said. During the incident, the suspect allegedly ran toward the juvenile, the boy’s family told investigators at the scene.

The family’s attorney said the young hunter warned the man several times to stop and was “in fear of his safety” as the accused thief came closer, according to the sheriff’s office. The man apparently did not stop, so the boy released an arrow that fatally struck him, authorities said.

The suspected thief was identified as 40-year-old Michael Stotts. The juvenile shooter was not taken into custody, but the investigation is ongoing.

Authorities said the property has been the site of several recent thefts.

I've taking large game with my bow.

And liked the heavier serrated heads, like..

Up to 150 grains. Absolutely deadly. And they really tare things up. Even shot a little high one time and broke the back bone clean through. Animals didn't suffer. Much like a old flint arrow head. They work great!

When I was a kid in the old days, I was at a Camp (Boys State) where a State Trooper demonstrating weapon lethality filled a 3 pound coffee can with sand and shot it with a .357 magnum pistol at close range, the bullet penetrated the can but did not go out the other side. He then took a compound bow with an arrow and shot the coffee can and the arrow traveled through both sides of the can. Heck of a demonstration for a youngster

The trespasser could have just shut up and ran away in full haste.

Nope, the perp was fully determined to go stealing on someone else's property and then copped an attitude about it no less.

Probably a career criminal and likely a doper besides with a long record of arrests.

A broadhead at close range sounds like a nasty way to get terminated.

Hope it hurt.

Wow,

Dad gave me his Sears branded High Standard Supermatic 12 gauge semi-auto shotgun when I was 14.

First thing he did was take me out to a friend's farm and hung up a nice new galvanized bucket from a tree branch. We stepped back about 20 yards and he proceeded to blow a basketball size hole through the bucket.

He said, "This is what happens when you make a mistake".

A very effective safety lesson!

Yeah, you could hear the self defense lawyers advice through out that statement,
but I imagine few, if any, really mind if it was crafted for coverage. Not sure 'bout
the E side o' MO, but on the west, the LE might have lent a hand in the crafting themselves.
..obeying the spirit and letter of the law o' course..
Still... bittersweet at best.

I somehow doubt that the thief "ran towards the boy", especially with his daddy right there, but since there is no one to contradict that story, it works.

Attorney friend of mine (Italian Lady from Argentina) once told me, if you ever have to shoot someone and they are outside, drag them inside.

I remember being told that when I was a kid and the laws that were in place at the time in New York State as it was murder if they made it out side the house before they died.

Unless Stotts thought he could take the bow from the boy who would not have the will to use it .... like they show on entertainment propaganda.

Two liter soda bottle full of water, throw it down, kick it, stomp it, then step back and shoot it.

Ol Mick Stotts. Folks around Jeff County never saw him around sober much. Always come into the bar smellin' of stale whiskey, piss, and guilt.

The grapevine was set all abuzz t'other night when Mick told all his cronies he was going out to Old Man Peterson's farm out by the county line, way back off the road in the woods, and help hisself to the new Country Squire lawn mowin' tractor and matching wood splitter he saw the old man buying at the Tractor Supply store last week.

Well, story goes that ol Mick had a snoot full when he showed up with his pickup and trailer to do what ol Mick done natcherlee. Stealing came easy to him, and he'd been picking up odds and end at Peterson's off and on for a few months. He knew when the farm was empty of folks and when to go in and get out.

Seems ol Mick was trying to figure out how to get the tractor to fire when Ol Man Peterson's grandson come on the place. He'd been out in the woods sighting in his new compound bow, getting ready for deer season.

The young'in hollered at Ol Mick, the story goes, to get his ass off his grandpa's new tractor. Mick, seeing a boy not more'n 11, mebbe 12 years old all puffed up at him and telling him to skedaddle.

Mick figgered the boy'd piss hisself if he rushed him, and he could get on with making the tractor and splitter his.

Mick didn't say nothin to the boy. He just took after him lickitty split.

Now, the boy, who was already limbered up, real quick like put an arrow to the string, pulled back, and let fly the purtiest, shiniest, straightest arrow y'ever seen.

Ol Mick let out nary a squeek as that arrow hit him dead center in his juggler vein, all four blades hitting dead center of his cervical spine, and out the back of his neck pulling Mick's innards out the hole with it.

Mick's throat went to gooshin blood all over, and his head dang neart fell off his shoulders 'fore his carcass lit aground there in the barnyard. Fell facedown in a muddy tractor rut full of now reddish water.

The boys father called it into Sheriff Beasley's office, and Beasley himself showed up right ahead of the meat wagon.

The sheriff didn't say much as the boy told him what happened. Just nodded a lot. Took a few pictures, and told the ambulance crew to haul the body to the mortician.

And that was that. Oh, there was a lot of drunk talk at the bar about going out to Peterson's and makin things right for Ol Mick. Never happened though.

Drunks do a lot of talkin, and not much doin when it comes to getting even.

Police need to complete investigation and report to DA or SA; if charges are filed, we'll find out more. I'll hold final judgement untill then but i f as presented; good reason not to steal stuff &/or threaten anyone.
