By now, with everyone all still busy either with the sick people or on standby or monitoring for the crew still out, Emilia had basically taken over the main contact with Larrissa’s family and in some ways, Karl’s group since she went right by their house on the way to Larrissa’s
One afternoon, Emilia stopped at Karl’s to get an update for Garen and Sabine on Penny’s progress from Isadora. While she waited for Isadora to come downstairs, she was in the kitchen talking with Hera and Olivia. They were at the kitchen table, papers strewn across it along with colored pencils. Emilia was instantly engrossed. She thought you could see a lot about how someone thought if you could see how they see things, like drawings they make or pictures they take
“Whatcha doing?”
“Finishing some drawings we started when we were down the hill with Ashley and Finn. Larrissa asked us to watch them so her, Ruby and Brody could do some ‘cow stuff’ without the little one getting stepped on.’ Hera said as she kept working on what seemed to be a landscape drawing with a neat tree and ridgeline in the distance. Emilia thought she recognized the tree from the far side of Larrissa’s pastures.
“That’s really friggen good Hera. I didn’t know you were so good at it.”
Hera blushed a bit. She had seen some of Emilia’s work and considered herself nowhere near as good as even Emilia’s crappiest doodles.
Emilia shifted over to see what Olivia was drawing. It was….different. It kind of looked a bit like some of her own style, being a creature rather than a landscape. She hated trying to draw a landscape and sucked at taking a decent picture of one. They never came out like she saw them in her head.
Emilia looked some more. It looked kind of like a humming bird, but the head wasn’t quite right. The beak was too small for a humming bird, more like a sparrow maybe? There were too many wings. A moth maybe? The front wings looked like a humming bird’s, complete with feathers. The back wings as well, but …different? And there was the long tapering base of the back wings that made her think moth or butterfly at first. The wings were silver-grey and looked feathered she thought again. The body was electric blue. She would have to look through some of Doug’s insect books because this was quite neat! She forgot how many different wild types of moths there were out there.
“That’s pretty wild looking. I don’t think I have ever seen a moth like that before.” Emilia said, still entranced trying to place where she had seen elements like this before.
“Neither had I. It’s Solomon, Paige asked him to help us get home the other night.” Olivia said as she worked on his antenna.
Emilia didn’t know what to say to that. She was saved from speechlessness by Isadora’s arrival. They went off to discuss Penny’s progress.
“She’s getting better and stronger each day. She is still a bit wobbly on her feet, but she can go to and from the bathroom without falling or stumbling if she takes it slow.”
“How is her appetite? Garen seems to place a lot of importance on her appetite; getting hungry, eating enough compared to before, nausea after eating, and so on and so forth.”
“She was never a big eater, but she is doing ok. I have been keeping food mild and filling, with plenty of broth and such to go with it.” Isadora said. She looked Emilia up and down, taking in how she was dressed. “Going down to see Brody, I assume?”
“What makes you say that?” Emilia said, looking down at herself quickly, the blush rising in her neck.
“Because you are dressed as Tenshi, that’s why. You have a real thing for Brody, don’t you?”
“Does it show?” The red was all the way to her hairline now.
Isadora looked at her, She saw the 14 year old girl she was, not the image of ‘big, bad Warrior woman Tenshi’. She remembered when Karen was that age, how love was so all consuming and derailing for her. ‘Engle’ might be protective of her ‘sister’ but poor Heidi would have a serious handful if anything went wrong.
“How long are you guys going to keep the whole secret identity thing going down there? If it’s going to be serious with Brody, he has a right to know you, and not just the one side of you.”
“I know, Isadora. Brody and Ruby and I talked the other day, with no one else around. I told them it was like in the comic books. The whole alter-ego thing was to protect everyone involved. I tried to use what Bekka said when we were talking about it. When she was a Sargent, she had to do, and say and be a certain way, to do the things she needed to do. Things she couldn’t do as just ‘Bekka’. It made sense to me, and Brody and Ruby said they kinda understood. Afterwards, I told those two my real name, but told them to not use it when anyone is around.”
Isadora nodded as Emilia said this.
“You really do have feelings for Brody and Ruby. You gave them a great gift, at least in their eyes. So when are you going to tell Heidi?”
Emilia cringed visibly.
“Soon. I wanted to wait until the other group gets back, but……” Emilia took a big deep breath. “Everyone is on pins and needles so much right now. I’ll probably still wait until afterwards.”
“Well, you better get down the hill and see Brody before it gets too late.” Isadora said, wrapping her up in a big hug.
Emilia turned to leave then turned back.
“Oh, I almost forgot. Sabine sent some books over for you. Something like needing someone to assist when her time came.” She pulled a pair of textbooks from her bag and handed them to Isadora.
Isadora looked at the books. Birthing books. It wouldn’t hurt to brush up. It had been a very long long time ago being a teenager helping her mother midwifing and delivering there in their small farming community. A long time indeed.
