The Suburban rolled up to the house right on time. Garen and Andrea were outside waiting on it. Emilia was out before it stopped rolling.

“Back seat. It’s Paige. She collapsed!” Emilia said as she opened the back door.

Olivia climbed out of the open front passenger seat.

“How can I help?” asked Olivia.

“Hop in back with Paige and unbuckle her so we can pull her out.” Bekka said as she came around from the driver’s side.

Garen took charge.

“OK, Andrea, Emilia, you carry the feet up first. Bekka and I will carry her head.” Garen turned to Olivia. “Olivia, is it?” When she nodded, he continued. “Please get the door for us.” He turned to Bekka. “What do we have?”

“Kara said she thought Paige was sick, early signs, fever, fatigue, altered mental status. She drove us out of the roughest sections of the trail then collapsed, literally. She fell out of the Suburban unconscious unresponsive. Vomited, defecated, burning up. We cleaned her up, wrapped her up, recovery position and made a beeline to here.”

Andrea was beside herself. Paige was sick! She can’t believe she missed it! She was so focused on Sabine she missed her best friend so sick she collapsed. Damn!

The whole group moved swiftly inside the house.

Garen and Sabine were working on Paige. They were going a mile a minute.

“BP 60 over palp.”

“Sinus tac.”

“Damn, 104 temp”

“Pulse 120 and thready.”

“Respirations 18 shallow and irregular.”

“Lung sounds are crappy.”

“So, what do you think, Sabine?” Garen asked her after their first five minutes of looking at her.

“Influenza, pneumonia, sepsis, are my top thoughts. She could have one two or all three. Fluids, IV antibiotics, expectorants, supportive care. If we put her on the day bed in the room with me, I can keep an eye on her.”

“So, about a week or two recovery time I think from what you are describing, Sabine. We will start looking at someone else driving the recovery vehicle after getting her cleaned up and tucked in.”

Thanks for the fast fix! But they didn't even consider that she was just having a disussion with Henrick on the other side. Hopefully we're not so optimistic that she'll return just to get fooled.
Thank you.

While Garen and Sabine were working on Paige, Bekka, Olivia and Emilia were sitting in the living room.

“Olivia, you were amazing through all of this. I couldn’t have done any of this without you.” Bekka said. Olivia’s smile lit up her face. The serious girl was gone and the bouncy red-headed whirlwind was there. Bekka smiled as well.

Emilia could see Bekka was worn out. She knew she could do something to help.

“Olivia, I know some people who will be very glad to see you. By now, they have your new room all set up for you.” Emilia looked over at Bekka. “When it gets light here in a little bit, I’ll run her down to their new house in the Hyena. I got this. Doug and Heidi are crashed out on the day bed in your room.”

“Sounds good.” Bekka squatted and looked at Olivia. “Sweety, I’m tired and going to go to bed. Emilia here will take good care of you and get you down the hill to your parents and grandparents. I’ll be down later today or tomorrow to check up on you.”

“OK, Ms. Bekka.”

“You are a hell of a great kid and make a great partner. We are going to have a lot more fun together soon. I’m your new neighbor and right up the hill.”

Olivia wrapped herself around Bekka in a big hug before Bekka went off to bed.

Kids need adults who believe in them, challenge and teach them, and most of all like them for themselves. Olivia has earned that and more. Hope she doesn't go home to adults who try to make her a small child again.
Thanks CCG!

You're on-point about kids but, I think that "not a child anymore' ship sailed some time ago.

I fully expect her to be in a leadership role in Vol XXII or III

The next couple of days were interesting. Everyone was settling into a new routine. Sabine finally had her chest tube removed and was helping Doug and Garen work with their casualties. The most serious ones now were Paige and Penny.

Paige was still feverish and mostly unconscious. Sometimes she would move some, moan, or even one time cry out something no one understood. Through it all, she had one of her three protectors always there. If it wasn’t Andrea, it was Sabine. If not Sabine, it was Jesse.

The drugs they were trying, and there were many, seemed to only do so much good. One of the constants was trying to get enough fluid in her. They kept pouring the fluid into her and she kept losing it or they gave her too much and her lung sounds would get worse. The expectorants would loosen the stuff in her lungs up, but she wasn’t conscious enough to cough it out. They dug out some older books Garen had about positional drainage and soon, they were rolling and bending Paige in an attempt to get the garbage out. All the while, her fever raged.

Penny was slowly recovering and spending more time awake. The cracks in her skull had allowed a form of pressure relief for the swelling. She was down at their new place in Mrs. Leary’s old house being watched over by Isadora.

Kevin’s death hit her hard, as was expected. Karl and Isadora reassured her she was as much their daughter as Kevin was their son. Penny tried to put on a brave face when Olivia and Hera were around. She still had a child to raise. She had to get better.

Both Olivia and Hera were glad to have their best friends back. Hera showed Olivia the secret path Emilia found for them down to Larrissa’s and introduced her to everyone. Olivia, in turn, helped Hera learn some map and compass things. They practiced using it to move around the pastures, fields, and hedgerows on their land and Larrissa’s as they helped Brody and Ruby with the cows and goats. They were prepared for trouble as well.

A meeting with Karl, Isadora, David and Karen on one side of the kitchen table and Garen and Bekka on the other side was held the afternoon after Bekka’s return.

“Look, ten years old is old enough these days. Hell, both of them have already been shooting long before now.” Bekka reiterated to the concerned and unconvinced faces.

“I agree” Said David, one of their biggest supporters in this.”

“I don’t know. It’s a little young unsupervised.” Karl hemmed and hawed.

“We can teach them the right way and you set the boundaries but I think it’s a good thing. We aren’t talking about giving five year olds twelve gauge shot guns. We are talking a pistol for self-defense.” Garen said.

“Olivia has had one in her possession for the last five days and hasn’t blown her foot off or shot the cat. We have a second one the same size and configuration for Hera. If they learn the responsibility now, it will stay with them. If they learn them as tools, and to only use them as tools, all should be good.” Bekka said, trying to be convincing. She gave Olivia the pistol and didn’t want them taking it away from her.

Karl looked over at Isadora. She was his source for wisdom in so many things. She took his hands in hers.

“We can’t always be next to them to protect them. We have to work the fields, they have to work the fields. I think they should be able to protect themselves. What do you think?” Karl asked Isadora.

“If they are going to be around them, have some of their own, they need to learn. They need to learn more than the mechanics, they need to learn the why’s and the when’s. They need to learn the seriousness of this.” Isadora said. Isadora and Karl looked over at Kevin and David. Both were silent. They nodded back at Karl and Isadora.

“Garen, Bekka, We agree. They need trained though. Will you train them in this?”

Bekka and Garen smiled.

“We will train them. We would like some of you to attend during some of the later training so you can see what they have learned and what they should and should not be doing.” Garen said in his soothing teacher’s voice.

Fundamentals, properly instructed in any sort of activity, translate to safety & learned critical thinking going forward. Sort of makes one wonder how some of out congress-critters were raised; at least it raises that question for me.

Garen and Bekka were out walking around the property the evening of the meeting, trying to relax and get their minds in order.

“So, now we need to figure out how to train ten-year-olds.” Bekka said.

“Well, it’s kinda your fault. You armed Olivia.” He felt Bekka stiffen and start to turn. “No, I’m not saying it was the wrong thing to do. I agree. I’m just not sure what we need to do differently.”

“Training Emilia went well, so how about starting there.” Bekka said as she tried to put her hackles back down.

“Actually, you may have hit on a brilliant angle we can use.” Garen stopped walking and turned towards Bekka. “We have Emilia train them, with one of us watching as the assistant and back up.”

Bekka thought about his suggestion. Emilia was a hell of a learner. This would give her a chance to try teaching. Who knows, she might be a great teacher. They knew what she was taught, so she shouldn’t have any really bad habits yet and the teaching was fresh in her mind.

Bekka made the next big jump. If she did well, then she could also start some basic instruction with Ruby and maybe even Ashley. Basic knowledge would be a good thing. Teaching what you know to others helps cement things in your own mind as well.

“That could definitely work.” She said to Garen. “Once she gets them up on the fundamentals, then she could help Heidi or Allyson teach the next level of shooting.”

“If the others are back and Allyson and Heidi are off alert.” Garen said, addressing the elephant in the meadow so to speak.

“It’s been several days. They should be ready to come home soon. You told me Zed was planning for a week or so, they have a day or two left on that timetable. Besides, they have been checking in and haven’t reported any problems yet.”

“I know, but I just want everyone home. It’s bad enough Sabine and I haven’t been able to break this flu Paige has. With those three still out there, we don’t know what other dangers might be lurking or coming our way. Speaking of not knowing, Karen and I are going out tomorrow to check the far cameras since Kara and Angelique aren’t here to do it.”

“That will be good for you. You need to get off the porch and run the yard some. Getting Karen a bit more knowledge of the land behind us will be good too.”

He got in the middle of a huge story, then passed on. I'm gonna start praying for you every night.

As I said in #5034-

wife already told me if that happens, she will just start making up random shit and claiming it was in my notes

example from her- Sabine hallucinates in drugged stupor and beats Andrea to death then makes it look like Paige did it, telling everyone Paige killed Henrik and Sabine covered it up for Paige

Not many of us know your wife so maybe we should all start praying. When was your last annual? Any cardiac or stroke precursors we need to be aware of?

I'm sorry but you know what follows if you cut a junky off cold turkey. I don't know how many followers this tale has but imagine all of us going cold turkey! Not a pretty sight!

Please take care of yourself ......

the greatest danger to me is the wife and a pillow in my sleep. Relatively healthy so the story should continue for some time. Was thinking pretty hard on elements of part seven on the way home

Foam, not feather pillows. Remove any plastic or vinyl covers. Practice the following phrases.

Yes Dear!

Here, have some chocolate/coffee/tea.

What can I do to help?

Let me rub your feet.

You chose what we watch.

You look better to me every day!

Wow, you are so good to me!

And mean it and say it like you mean it.

Remote Paramedical pain in the ass
By now, with everyone all still busy either with the sick people or on standby or monitoring for the crew still out, Emilia had basically taken over the main contact with Larrissa’s family and in some ways, Karl’s group since she went right by their house on the way to Larrissa’s

One afternoon, Emilia stopped at Karl’s to get an update for Garen and Sabine on Penny’s progress from Isadora. While she waited for Isadora to come downstairs, she was in the kitchen talking with Hera and Olivia. They were at the kitchen table, papers strewn across it along with colored pencils. Emilia was instantly engrossed. She thought you could see a lot about how someone thought if you could see how they see things, like drawings they make or pictures they take

“Whatcha doing?”

“Finishing some drawings we started when we were down the hill with Ashley and Finn. Larrissa asked us to watch them so her, Ruby and Brody could do some ‘cow stuff’ without the little one getting stepped on.’ Hera said as she kept working on what seemed to be a landscape drawing with a neat tree and ridgeline in the distance. Emilia thought she recognized the tree from the far side of Larrissa’s pastures.

“That’s really friggen good Hera. I didn’t know you were so good at it.”

Hera blushed a bit. She had seen some of Emilia’s work and considered herself nowhere near as good as even Emilia’s crappiest doodles.

Emilia shifted over to see what Olivia was drawing. It was….different. It kind of looked a bit like some of her own style, being a creature rather than a landscape. She hated trying to draw a landscape and sucked at taking a decent picture of one. They never came out like she saw them in her head.

Emilia looked some more. It looked kind of like a humming bird, but the head wasn’t quite right. The beak was too small for a humming bird, more like a sparrow maybe? There were too many wings. A moth maybe? The front wings looked like a humming bird’s, complete with feathers. The back wings as well, but …different? And there was the long tapering base of the back wings that made her think moth or butterfly at first. The wings were silver-grey and looked feathered she thought again. The body was electric blue. She would have to look through some of Doug’s insect books because this was quite neat! She forgot how many different wild types of moths there were out there.

“That’s pretty wild looking. I don’t think I have ever seen a moth like that before.” Emilia said, still entranced trying to place where she had seen elements like this before.

“Neither had I. It’s Solomon, Paige asked him to help us get home the other night.” Olivia said as she worked on his antenna.

Emilia didn’t know what to say to that. She was saved from speechlessness by Isadora’s arrival. They went off to discuss Penny’s progress.

“She’s getting better and stronger each day. She is still a bit wobbly on her feet, but she can go to and from the bathroom without falling or stumbling if she takes it slow.”

“How is her appetite? Garen seems to place a lot of importance on her appetite; getting hungry, eating enough compared to before, nausea after eating, and so on and so forth.”

“She was never a big eater, but she is doing ok. I have been keeping food mild and filling, with plenty of broth and such to go with it.” Isadora said. She looked Emilia up and down, taking in how she was dressed. “Going down to see Brody, I assume?”

“What makes you say that?” Emilia said, looking down at herself quickly, the blush rising in her neck.

“Because you are dressed as Tenshi, that’s why. You have a real thing for Brody, don’t you?”

“Does it show?” The red was all the way to her hairline now.

Isadora looked at her, She saw the 14 year old girl she was, not the image of ‘big, bad Warrior woman Tenshi’. She remembered when Karen was that age, how love was so all consuming and derailing for her. ‘Engle’ might be protective of her ‘sister’ but poor Heidi would have a serious handful if anything went wrong.

“How long are you guys going to keep the whole secret identity thing going down there? If it’s going to be serious with Brody, he has a right to know you, and not just the one side of you.”

“I know, Isadora. Brody and Ruby and I talked the other day, with no one else around. I told them it was like in the comic books. The whole alter-ego thing was to protect everyone involved. I tried to use what Bekka said when we were talking about it. When she was a Sargent, she had to do, and say and be a certain way, to do the things she needed to do. Things she couldn’t do as just ‘Bekka’. It made sense to me, and Brody and Ruby said they kinda understood. Afterwards, I told those two my real name, but told them to not use it when anyone is around.”

Isadora nodded as Emilia said this.

“You really do have feelings for Brody and Ruby. You gave them a great gift, at least in their eyes. So when are you going to tell Heidi?”

Emilia cringed visibly.

“Soon. I wanted to wait until the other group gets back, but……” Emilia took a big deep breath. “Everyone is on pins and needles so much right now. I’ll probably still wait until afterwards.”

“Well, you better get down the hill and see Brody before it gets too late.” Isadora said, wrapping her up in a big hug.

Emilia turned to leave then turned back.

“Oh, I almost forgot. Sabine sent some books over for you. Something like needing someone to assist when her time came.” She pulled a pair of textbooks from her bag and handed them to Isadora.

Isadora looked at the books. Birthing books. It wouldn’t hurt to brush up. It had been a very long long time ago being a teenager helping her mother midwifing and delivering there in their small farming community. A long time indeed.

Thank you. I'm happy you added in the firearms training section. This book is going to be a classic in many ways and while most of us here follow that pattern teaching our kids, that information adds to it.

Is it Tenshi or Tenchi? You used both in

Tenshi, I fixed the error, thanks!

The trio had a good hide site. They had solid cover from most angles between a deadfall and some rocks. Here they compared notes at a whisper, handing around Bekka’s camera and the shell casings.

“Yay, 7mm Remington Magnum. That will be a bolt gun but it hits like a freight train from a long way away. We can’t give them any straight shots at us. With the number of holes and the speed they were going, we are looking at two or three shooters with them minimum.” Zed said.

“That matches with some of Bekka’s pics. There are at least four individuals with slung bolt guns. The rest have AR variants. There are at least fifteen different people at the ambush site in the series of pics. Men, women and even some older kids.” Kara said.

“Who brings kids and unarmed people to an ambush?” Angelique didn’t understand why someone would put them in jeopardy.

“Well, let’s get some rest and backtrack the trail. They couldn’t be that far away. We need to find their base and watch them. I want how many, how armed, how observant. We need to know why they did it, and are they doing it all the time or was this a one-time thing. Once we have all of that, we then have enough to ask one of them some questions. I want to have the questions ready and snatch the right person to answer them. That’s why we hide and watch first. I know I said all of this before we came out, but nothing we have seen so far has changed it.” Zed looked at Kara and Angelique. Both nodded in agreeance.

“Good. Let’s get some sleep.”
