Remote Paramedical pain in the ass
Andrea spent at least a half an hour going through the radio with Jesse. The frequencies, the repeater locations, the map with the reference locations, all the other operations elements took another hour. She was seriously impressed at the level of organization and planning going on here. She was in Tactical Operations Centers downrange that were nowhere near this set up. Who were these people?

Garen had impressed upon both her and Isadora the need to let Penny and Sabine rest and to keep Hera from overdoing things. He also showed them where to write the vital signs and what to do if this one went up or this one went down, when to empty the bags on the urinary catheters, what to look for before they dumped them, and what things to immediately call Garen or Doug about.

Andrea didn’t care. She considered it a small price to pay to be here with Sabine most of the time instead of twiddling her thumbs in the other building. One of the things she did as she waited for Sabine to wake up some was compose an update to radio down to Ivar.

She was building a bigger update so she could send it Packet style. She had her small laptop and all the linking cables with her now and wanted to warn them of the two danger points, the revised fuel estimates and the safe haven with Chance the Vet. She decided to hold off on telling them about Henrik. That should only be done face to face.

Kara, Angelique and Zed were standing around the table in the workshop running through scenarios to work on their packing and pre-plans when a significant problem came to Kara’s attention. She sent Angelique to get Garen. When they returned, she laid out the problem to the four others.

“So, we were running through the plan and with who we have, where, we end up with a crew out and about without a medic.”

Garen thought he saw what Kara was getting at.

“Well, sure, Bekka and Olivia don’t have a medic with them right now , but we are headed out to get them so all should be good.” Before he finished his statement, Kara was shaking her head.

“No the problem is when we get there, we will be sending Bekka, Paige and Olivia somewhere without a medic.”

“Yeah, but that’s just between pick up and the house.” Garen countered.

Angelique was catching on now and spoke up.

“Yeah, and Kara and Heidi just went down to drop off some gas.”

Ouch! Garen cringed at that reminder.

“Alright, Kara. What do you propose?”

“Right now, for medics you have you, me, Doug, Allyson and the wonder Russian there.” She pointed over at Angelique before she continued. ”Heidi is half trained and Emilia is just starting and neither would be a good choice to work without a net.”

At this statement, Angelique straightened up a bit. She wasn’t included in the ‘need to be babysat’ crew!

“Either you or Doug needs to stay here for our intensive care ward. So, we have me and Angelique going walkabout with Zed, and Allyson the ace fighter pilot of our rescue team. What do we do for medical for them as they are coming back?”

Garen knew Kara was right. He was primarily hoping there wouldn’t be a need, he realized. He sat there with his gears whirling for some time while they all looked at him. He worked several combinations in his head, evaluating risk versus reward in each. Finally he came to a conclusion. Not the perfect answer, but a viable plan, he thought.

“So, you guys ride out with Paige in the Suburban. For that leg, we have Kara and Angelique for med support. If there’s an issue, they can handle it and we rework the recon. Bekka is fairly well trained in the basics and some advanced medical for immediate action stuff. You guys take an extra aid bag to leave with her in case they need it on the drive home. Meanwhile, I add my med gear to Allyson’s truck. If there is a medical emergency before they get back, I go out with her and Heidi. Once we get Paige, Bekka and Olivia back here, we look at any needed plan for your pick up. If it’s a slow and stealthy extract, Paige again driving with a medic with her. A fast pick up, Allyson, Heidi and I slide up in the truck and you guys hop in the back and we boogie. Does that help your concerns?”

“I guess that should work. I don’t have a better idea.” Kara said, her worries placated for now.

“Good. Let me know what else you three need to prep and I will dig it out for you.” Garen said. He was already thinking, trying to figure out any changes to his med bag before he dumped it in the truck with Allyson and Heidi.

Thank you. I've already forgotten about Ivar and the crowd back home! Sure hope they don't head this way without previously making radio contact.
Pretty sure that wouldn't happen assuming there's power to run comms.
I would suggest upgrading seating systems, beverage holders etc etc and being certain any required cardiac meds are current & near to hand as I think we're in close proximity to another major nexus in the main story line.

Only question for me is will Bekka be successfully retrieved whole before or after we move on.

Not to suggest for one moment our fearless guide on this journey would consider establishing a new, higher, twisting-in-the-wind TB2K record cliff-moment for his faithful readers.

Such a quandary ......

“So, you were talking about hitting them fast and hard. What were you thinking weapon-wise?” Kara asked Zed as Garen walked out.

“Well, I have twelve mags pulled for my rifle….” Zed started. Angelique interrupted.

“Twelve mags! That’s a shit ton of ammo to haul around!” Everyone was quiet a moment. “Do you really think we need that much?” Kara answered Angelique question.

“I don’t remember anyone commenting after a firefight ‘I wish I didn’t bring all this ammo’ so If Zed thinks it might be necessary, we should probably gear up to be the worst nightmare to anyone who discovers us.”

“So, like a friend of mine put it, it should be like a kitten sneaking up in a water balloon. They shouldn’t know what we are and if they get too curious, POP, they get splashed and the balloon vanishes before all the water even hits the floor.” Zed hoped they understood his analogy.

Kara and Angelique had to laugh at the mental image. Once Angelique got some semblance of control, she now had more questions.

“So, moving fast and hitting hard. Are we thinking any long-range stuff? If so, I guess I would be the designated shooter? I already have all my mags for my long gun loaded and I can throw some extra boxes in my pack.”

When Angelique brought up long guns, Kara definitely agreed with Angelique.

“Yeah, if she brings the long reach, I’ll bring one of the suppressed ARs, which would give us some medium quiet reach, then if it comes to unloading we have my AR and your AK and if they are close, the pistols are good for a hundred yards at least, as fast as we can drive them. We have decent firepower if we have to break and run.”

“Sounds like we are good on that aspect. Jesse is getting the manpack radio all set up. I’ll carry it since you two will have med gear. Garen said there was a bunch of lightweight backpacking food on one of the shelves in the tunnel. I figure if we figure two weeks for supplies and only target being out a week, we should be set.” Zed was trying to think what other major elements they still needed to address.

Paige was busy. She was glad. It kept her mind away from the yawning abyss that was Henrik’s absence. It was hard though. It seemed that everywhere she turned, there he was. She had to get a tool kit together to take on the little road trip. Whoever the person was who built the Suburban built a hell of a rig. Not the way she would have done most things, but a hell of a job in the construction.

The problem she had with it was whoever designed and built it didn’t anticipate anything ever breaking or having to be worked on outside of a fully stocked garage. In her Cherokee she had the baby welder, the air compressor, power inverter, the additional lift and hoist points, and easy access to all the major components.

This rig had all the major build points done well, but there wasn’t any on board repair components, and some of the initial build points would make working on things hard, especially in the middle of nowhere. This was something she was trying to figure a way around in case something broke on the trail. With as overbuilt as the Suburban was, it shouldn’t be an issue. This time.

She would rather take her Cherokee or Sabine’s Land Cruiser but they were still packed to the gills and were two seaters now anyway. Now, it might be fun to take the giant Tatra in the corner, and it would surly go damn near anywhere, but it wouldn’t do it quietly or unobserved for long. So, instead, she was driving the Suburban for some logging road work.

She had to pull a set of vehicle recovery gear from the Cherokee. Garen probably had the stuff she could scrape together what she needed, but it would take time. It was better she just have the stuff she knew and trusted. Besides, she had two sets for the Cherokee and two for Sabine’s Cruiser.

When she was digging these out, she had another thought. A memory from their recent drive. She grabbed the rope rescue gear they used to get Tracey out of her crashed Sherriff’s vehicle down the hillside. Her mind raced over what they did that night. They needed the roll up stretcher as well. Another thing to the Suburban. She looked at the front and back of the Suburban. No Luck! No capstan winch. Any raising they had to do would either be with the main winch cable or by hand with bodies and pulleys.

Paige was trying to think of everything. She wasn’t sure what she was missing, but she knew she was missing stuff! She had to force herself to calm down! The food she ate when they got up was long gone from her system. She knew she needed to eat, but she wasn’t hungry. Everything tasted flat and bland and lifeless. It was hard to force herself. Where was the person she was who was wolfing down food every two hours before they left? Buried in a hole in the woods, her mind answered harshly.

While a bunch of preparations were underway, Garen had another errand to do. He took Emilia with him. He was teaching her how to drive the Hyena and this would be a good little jaunt for them.

“Good morning Garen. Good morning Tenshi.” Brody’s cheerful voice rang out when they drove up.

“Good morning Brody. Can you get your mother for me, please?” Garen asked.

“Sure! She’s in the house with Finn. Ruby and Ashly are down with the goats.”

Garen noticed Brody was talking to him but kept looking over at Emilia.

“Tenshi, can you go with him and help keep Finn on task with Brody. I need to talk to Larrissa for a few.” Garen caught the half hidden smile when he suggested her going in with Brody. The two disappeared inside. A few short minutes later, Larrissa came out the door.

“Morning, Garen. What brings you around this morning? Come to think of it, haven’t seen any of you for a couple days. Anything wrong?” She caught herself. “Anything wrong I need to worry about?” She corrected.

“We have a bunch of people moving around in several places, trying to make things safer for us. We have had everyone in the middle of it, and still do. I was coming to you about some of that.”

Larrissa was very attentive now. She didn’t want trouble coming here. Not when they had just settled into a good routine after getting rid of those bad eggs.

“What’s on your mind, Garen?”

"Well, I was thinking about Mrs. Leary’s house, with all the pastures, and the barns. I have a friend who just had their house burned down and they lost their whole farm. I was wondering if you would object to them moving into her house? They would start farming some of the upper pastures and give both of us someone here to help.”

Larrissa started wondering about having someone new moving in. This would be a big change. Then again, better someone Garen knew and had vetted than some random squatter trying it.

“Who are they? I have to worry about my kids.”

Garen relaxed some. He made it past the tricky part. With the subject in the open and her asking questions, it should go well.

“He’s a longtime friend of Jesse’s. They knew on another back when Jesse was in the Marines with him. It would be him, his wife, their daughter and her husband and daughter, and their daughter-in-law and her kid. The grandkids are nine or ten. They brought stuff to start farming, so between them farming and you and the livestock, it should be a good match. We would still be around like we are now as well.”

Larrissa thought and thought. It’s not like she had a legal right to say no, but she knew Garen really wanted her opinion and approval on this. Where would the harm be? Two more kids in the area wouldn’t be bad, either.

“OK, Garen, you vouch for them, I’m all in. Bring them around so we can meet the new neighbors.”

“We will swing by soon, probably in a day or two. They just got here.”

I'd almost forgotten the Brody/Tenshi connection :); but, there's been a bit going on.

Hopefully the young man survives his 'first love' / infatuation; those wounds can be debilitating.

Bekka had her map and compass out, along with her handheld GPS. She started showing Olivia simple map and compass stuff, starting with triangulation to identify where they thought they were. She was quite pleased with the both of them when the little GPS showed them to be basically where they thought they were.

They were just finishing up when the radio drew her attention. It was Jesse with movement instructions.

“Viking, this is ATC, Flight plan corrections to follow.”

“ATC, Viking. Ready to copy.” Bekka said as she grabbed her pen.

“First, from where you got off your turtle. Face Kara’s rock from the hot tub. Distance is from the hot tub to the gate and back. This should put you back in the saddle. When you get there, Look from the training building towards where Hemdal came from. Go from Terry’s spot to the house. Get tucked in near the taxiway. The kids will be along about the time you hear the purring overhead.”

All through what Jesse was saying, Bekka didn’t even try to translate, afraid of missing another clue. She just copied it down word for word. When he was finished, she checked her copy and read it back to him.

“Sounds like you have it all. I’ve got some errands to attend to and you have some ground to cover. I’m turning you over to another controller for a while. She will take real good care of you Viking.”

“Sounds good ATC.” Bekka replied, wondering who it would be. A new voice, a woman’s voice came over the radio, answering her question.

“Viking, this is ATC. How do you read me?”

“Read you fine ATC. Glad to hear you there.” Bekka recognized the voice of the short radio chick traveling with Paige.

“Viking, you need anything, just give me a shout. I’ll be right here.”

“Sounds good. We will check in later.”

Bekka looked over at Olivia. She was staring at the cryptic notes on the paper next to the map. She may as well explain as she deciphers it.

“You remember me telling you about not saying everything over the radio?”

“Yes, Ms. Bekka.”

“Well, with what he said, I should be able to figure out the directions and how far we need to go. Since all the locations are around my house, someone who is listening in wouldn’t have a clue.” She looked at the paper.

“First, from where you got off your turtle. That must mean where we got out of the cars. Since he doesn’t know exactly where we are, he is giving a reference to somewhere we would know. “ Bekka looked at the map and turned it and twisted it.

“Here. This is where we started from.” She said, putting her finger on the map. “Now where did he want us to go from here?” She looked at the next line.

“Face Kara’s rock from the hot tub.” She thought about this for a moment or two until she got a rough southwest bearing. “So here he is telling me to picture standing at the hot tub and look towards a spot Kara normally hangs out at.” She turned and looked at Olivia. “You know Kara. She was the tall woman who showed up a couple hours before I did at your Grandfather’s house.”

“Yeah” Olivia’s face lit up. This was a puzzle and it was neat how it all worked! Bekka started talking again.

“So, when he said ‘Distance is from the hot tub to the gate and back.’, I know how far it is to walk to the front gate leading out to the road, so the distance we travel in this direction is twice the distance from the hot tub to the gate.” Bekka marked it on the map. If she figured out all the clues now, she could line up for the end destination and beeline or deviate their path as they needed to and still get where they needed to be.

“When he says ‘This should put you back in the saddle.’ We can look at the map right here.” She put her finger on a set of figure eight shaped terrain lines.” And this is what is called a ‘saddle, which is a lower spot between two hills or rises.”

“Now, we start from this location, ‘Look from the training building towards where Hemdal came from.’ We picked up a cat from our neighbor to the west of us. From the training building at the house, it’s a bit north by northwest. So we again know the direction, now how far?” She asked Olivia.

“We go from Terry’s spot to the house!” Olivia exclaimed! “That’s cool!”

“Exactly! Now the next part is a little trickier though. He said ‘Get tucked in near the taxiway.’ That might be a road, a trail, or who knows. We will have to think on that one as we get close.”

“What about his part, Ms. Bekka?” Olivia pointed at the last line of her notes.

“The kids will be along about the time you hear the purring overhead.” Bekka read aloud, trying to connect it. A huge grin appeared as if by magic on her face. Merlin!

“That part means they should be here in the middle of the night.”

“I don’t understand.”

“ I have a cat that curls up on the pillow above my head when I go to sleep.”

You know, with ALL these young ladies and early teen girls around. It would be a great time for a Boy Scout troop to come through the area, after surviving the initial EQ and Wave. They could have been on a long adventure hike into the back woods. It would take a while, given resources and hunkering down for the winter. To try to get back to civilization.
Just a thought.

The scouts in our troop are way to immature to even think of these ladies... more like a squad of Rangers... and even then they would have to be coaxed into behaving up to the level of the women...
