Good Morning, All! Hope you are all doing well this morning! I'm a little cranky around the edges, but trying to work my way out of it - usually a nap helps, but it's a little early to take one since I just woke up a bit ago so that's not likely to happen for another few hours yet

I woke up to kittens making noise on the other side of the basement door - not sure how those little escape artists got out of the utility room this time, but I conned them into coming to me by opening a packet of tuna, then slid the porch screen open and got them to go outside. Got the coffee going, then cleaned and refilled the hummingbird feeders while my coffee pot did it's thing, so now it's time to sit down and visit here for a bit, then plan the rest of my day and get the week sorted out - it's going to be a busy one. Then again; aren't they all :) (Just two more weeks until my next vacation... I can make it!!)

I think I'm almost glad that it's supposed to rain almost every day this week as I'm going to be busy with other stuff so I won't have to feel guilty about not getting outside chores done like weeding between the plants in the garden (already too soggy to get in there), and getting mulch put down. I had to trade work shifts around as my co-worker Buddy is going in for a cardiac cath and needed someone to stay with him afterwards/overnight, so I'll be working tonight instead of one my usual shifts. Then I'll work my normal Monday night shift; and have a doctor's appointment right after I get off work Tuesday morning that isn't likely to go well - and not only because I'll likely be tired and cranky. I think one of us is probably going to fire the other one since we butted heads at our last visit; just not sure which one of us will get to it first  If he beats me to it, I will probably end up having to see a cardiologist to get my blood pressure meds - bleah. Maybe I can just get Doc to push me off on another MD... I might try to go to Aldi after my doc visit unless I'm too tired... Then Wednesday is Buddy's cath so that day is filled up. Thursday, if Buddy doesn't have any complications and I it's okay to leave, I'll hit Aldi if I didn't get there on Tuesday; then go home and catch some sleep before I go back in to work. I'll go by the Farmer's Market after I get off work on Friday; then hopefully catch up on sleep. Gotta get the kittens in to the vet sometime during the week though; dang - I'd better call tomorrow and get an appointment. Then, starting Saturday I will probably have the boys for the weekend...

I've got peppers turning color in the garden so they will soon need to be picked, chopped or cut into lobes, blanched, and frozen. I need to find time this week to pull the beets, then blanch and freeze the tops and can the bottoms so that the sweet potatoes will have more room in that bed. If I can find an empty spot, I need to plant more beets for fall. I've got a lot of basil, thyme and rosemary I need to dry. The raised bed by the kitchen door needs weeded now that I have the ones by the garden cleaned up; and I need to have Hubby bring me more cardboard home from work so that I can mulch the flower bed where I planted the coneflower seed as soon as I see them coming up...

I think I just wore myself out thinking about all that

Take care all; have a safe and happy week!

You are so busy if it were not so early I need a nap just reading it. :)

It is raining and it looks like it is going to be an all-day event so I can't play outside today. sigh

I just took a few older jars of my canned tomatoes and tomato sauce and am making a big pot of spaghetti sauce. I'm going to have some for dinner and can the rest.

We're looking at low 90s with minimal chance of rain all week. Blech! I cleaned my Rogue and hubby's truck. So humid! We got up early yesterday and picked 4 gallon of blueberries. I canned 7 jars of lower sugar jam. Never made before. It was delicious. Used my new steam canner which I love! No more water bath canning for me. Also made a blueberry pie. It's already gone. Will be canning blueberry pie filling and more jam. Will try to get 4 more gallon Saturday. Packaged and froze 12 chicken thighs and 8 qts of blueberries. Cleaned out deep freeze to make room. Really need to take some days off and go through stuff to give to GW. We need to downsize. As much as I got rid of before we moved, it's not enough.

Hope everyone has a peaceful, productive week!

I managed to drag myself to walmart today. Finally I found a couple of chairs for one or the other porches. Ozark Trail Director's chair with side table for $19, for that price I got two, I wanted two, so now that is taken care of.

Also this walmart had the 16 oz propane canisters, I have the fitting to fill them, 2 or 7.44, I got 4. And I also got the Ozark Trail single burner propane stove for 18.72, they are in the $35 range or higher on amazon and walmart.com. This should be easy to use to boil water or warm something quickly when the power goes out. I do have other options but I've been wanting to add this to my options.

Got a case of walmart brand chicken gravy and another case of mandarin oranges with no sugar added. An extra 6x8 tarp, I have to hide these from DH because he uses and abuses them, ruins them and does not replace them. I like to have something put back for emergencies, he still thinks he can run to walmart and get what he needs, not on everything, but things like tarps.

I got 2 loaves of 88 cents each white bread. I hesitated because I'm sure the quality of the bread is poor, but I reminded myself that most bread is crap any way. Right now DH is into fresh tomato sandwiches on white bread with (gag) miracle whip.

The online walmart app said they were out of stock of the Commuinty Coffee and chickory 23 oz. brick, but they did have some after all, I only wanted one.

I bought some lemon juice concentrate, not really what I wanted but it is shelf stable. I wanted the lemon juice to make Haymakers Punch, trying to stay hydrated and this is a healthy drink. I also bought two of the Bristol 16 oz canned ham. They have been out of DAK for the longest time.

And Fedx delivered two more cases of Simple Truth Lentils from Vitacost. They were 65 cents each because they are closing them out. Very happy I've been able to add more to my pantry. Lentils are my favorite and the simple truth brand doesn't add crap to them.

Dang, I forgot to add bacon ends and pieces to my list and I did not think to look for them. The are the Wright brand. I just looked and they do have them in stock. so I added them to my list for next time.

If you have a food lion near you, they have the Folgers coffee on sale through tomorrow for $4.99 a container. I think the normal price is $8.99. I haven’t seen it cheaper than $4.99 for a long time. The normal sale price is $5.99.
Just thought I’d mention it.

What do you use mandarin oranges for? I thought I was grabbing a can of peaches and accidently got the oranges next to them.

I eat them and on occasion I put them in a salad or even a stir fry. But mainly I dump a can of them in a bowl and eat them, they are my treat. Yum Yum

I am thawing out a big package of chicken breasts. I'm going to can some plain and then I'm going to try to can some of the chicken with the veggies that I put in a chicken pot pie.

I've got powdered cream of anything soup and canned cream in the pantry for the final product, but I was wondering about canning with the spices in the chicken. Is that a bad idea?

I have found the spices get stronger after canning.

I make chicken stew, fully seasoned, and can it up. It's always good. I've reaI'that sage can turn bitter with canning, but ivenever had any problem with using a judicious amount of poultry seasoning.

I have spent at least 12 hours looking for some work paperwork that I had misplaced. I needed it since HR has not sent me my last paycheck, which I was supposed to get mid May. Well I just found it stuck to the inside of the console in my car. Evidently some hand sanitizer got spilled on it and it was just enough to make it sticky. I have pulled everything out of that console half a dozen times... :bhd:
I deleted a bunch of work files off of my computer, I had no idea that I had so much stored at home. It's bad when you have to hide your work so your fellow employees can't steal, or sabotage it. So glad to be out of there.
Spent 20 minutes this morning hacking vines and briars off of 2 gates, and chopping down all the polk salad that had grown up in the path to the compost pile. I was soaked thru and had to stop. The humidity was terrible. I haven't been sleeping at night for some reason.
Got the car loaded up to run all my errands tomorrow.
Dh ordered some more tractor parts, so I guess if they get here that I will be helping him with that for the rest of the week.

Do any of you have buckwheat flour stored? How are you storing it? I thought I was done buying stuff, but am rethinking that. Any experience with storage on this? TIA!

I would think vacuum sealed or in a mylar with o2 just like any other flour or you could keep it in your freezer.

Yes, as Judy said, it can be stored in mylar with oxygen absorbers. Or, if you have a grain grinder, you could buy whole buckwheat, and grind as needed.

They make a good chilled fruit salad with canned pineapple, banana, and shredded coconut. Or blend it all together, maybe add some milk or coconut milk, and make Popsicles.
The fruit salad sounds delightful.

Now that it's stopped raining every day, I was able to do laundry this morning. Have all that hanging on the clothes line. I'll have another laod to do tomorrow. Got the yard mowed for another week. It's been raining so much that Cary has had to mow every 5 days to keep it under control. We found a large patch of Plantain growing at the far back corner of our property. I told him not to mow that, anymore. I'm going to 'baby" that patch, so I'll have some on hand if I need it in the future.

DS called me, yesterday, asking me if I would do something for him. I said, "Sure. What?". He asked if I would make supper for him, tonight. I told him I would, and ask him what he wanted me to cook for him. LOL, all he wanted was Hamburger Helper and French fries. Then, he ask if I could throw a few deviled eggs in, too. That's all he wanted. Since he's been living with Mom, she doesn't do much cooking, and he's been having to either cook for himself (not doing a very good job of it), or do fast food. He was ready for Mama's cooking, LOL! He's 42.......Hamburger Helper and French fries was one of his favorite meals growing up. Something quick and easy to make for them, before heading out to the ball games.

Thank you for that 20Gauge I can always add the spices later, you saved a whole batch of chicken from probably being ruined. :sal:
Not really. They seem to get stronger, but I have never had one go bad. Though I do try and avoid canning meat with spices. It allows for greater variability in use.

Made a quick trip to Walmart today. They had the pint size canning jars so I picked up another 2 cases. I mainly went to get more cough syrup and cough drops. The OTC meds were really, really low, though I was able to get what I needed. Other holes here and there (water for one and the meat cases were almost empty), but I didn't have time to look in depth.

My brother is coming to visit the first week in August which gives me about 2 and a half weeks to get some stuff done around here. Awhile back I had the sofa cleaned off, but it got piled up again. Now its cleaned off again and I really want to keep it that way. Also I got some other prep related things out of the living room. And God help us I dusted the furniture in the living room. I'm allergic to dust, but if I dusted more often it wouldn't be so bad. I've done a lot of clearing out in the bedroom too, laundry almost done. I get it washed but getting it put away is another thing.

Now to get the huge excess stuff out of the kitchen, where I can actually see the floor will be a very good thing.

Supper was a success last night! DS ate, til I thought he would explode. He was so hungry for a home cooked meal. I'll start inviting him over to eat more often. Even though, with MS, his body has trouble regulating heat, he seems to being doing good, here. It's not as hot as it is in Texas, according to him.

Sunny skies with a heat index forecast to be around 100+, today. Another load of laundry being washed to hang outside. I've got floors to mop, today, so I'll do that, later, after it gets too hot outside. This afternoon, Cary plans to go to oldest DS's house, and bring back a trailer load of firewood DS has cut for us. We've already replaced all the firewood we used during the winter, so all of this will be extra.

Sometime today, I'll be making out my next Sam's online order list. I got a sale catalogue from them, and will go through it marking all the sale items I use on a regular basis. That will determine what goes on my list. We swallowed our pride, and Cary renewed our membership plus card for another year. I'll also be making out my next Walmart online list as well. Ya just have to go where the prices are cheapest. Heck with boycotts, at least for the time being. I'm going to keep stocking my pantry while I can. I'll find some place to put it all.

We had to go to a bigger town for hubbys dr appointment. While we were there, we bought Birthday and Christmas for the little grandboys. We have not bought for the kids(all grown) but the littles are taken care of. Now where to hide it.

I had hubby stop at the liquor store. Our county is dry. You can't even buy beer here. I bought a big bottle of vodka to make elderberry medicine. The elderberry crop looks to be a good one. I wonder if I should have bought 2 bottles. Then hubby stopped at the gun store and bought a box of ammo.

The family is starting the process to get hubby's dad into a care facility. His mom is weaker every day it seems. Yesterday, hubby's dad did not know who his wife of over 50 years was. Today he did not know his daughter. It is so sad. Both my parents have been gone over 25 years. I feel they were blessed to go relatively fast.

I have started drinking apple cider vinegar with honey in a glass of water. I don't like the taste, but the honey makes it drinkable. And I have less fluid retention and bloating. So I guess I will keep it up awhile.

We had to go to the VA today, DH got shots in his knee. I decided to wait for him in the cafeteria. $8 for a small pasta bowl, outrageous and not all the tasty. I sat down at a row of tables and in a little while several men sat down too. Being the friendly person that I am I started to chat with a couple of them. They are in a program for issues. One or two white men the rest were black. They were all so nice, they are struggling to deal with their issues. One that sat across from me had anger issues, none of the others voluntered what their issues were. The were such nice people, I even hugged a couple of them. The one I talked to the most said it brightened his day after talking to me. Its so special when you have unexpected encounters with nice people.

I was able to stop by a Krogers, got an extra bottle of mollasas (sp) and maple syrup and a few other things, I like Kroger.

We also stopped at a thrift store in a small town on the way home. I picked up some sleaveless summer tops for $2 each.

Canned up some chicken and pork. Got it relatively cheap from Costco. I get the tasty $5 rotisserie chickens, strip the meat from the bones, can it and make broth from the bones. I usually freeze the broth until I need it or plan on canning more chicken.
Great idea!

Thunderstorms rolled through our area again, yesterday. Lost my internet satellite feed off and on all afternoon from rain fade. Thought we were going to lose power at one point, while I was cooking supper, but it stayed on. More storms in the forecast for this afternoon. Yard needs mowing again already, too. Cary may get rained out, so he may have to wait, until Monday to get it done. By then, it'll be bad. Too many snakes around here to let it get too high. Thankfully, we have cats that are avid hunters.

I did get my last load of laundry done, and hung to dry, yesterday, before the rain hit. Cary also managed to bring another trailer full of firewood home from DS's house, yesterday. This load will need to be split, before stacking.

I'll be doing some house cleaning, today, getting ready for our home fellowship/Bible study crowd, tomorrow. I might make a cake. Red Velvet. I don't like to bake in rainy weather, though. We'll see.

Our tomatoes are doing great with all this heat, humidity, and rain! Looks like I'm going to be canning tomatoes before long. The plants are absolutely loaded. They should be turning soon.

This is the first year we've had a lousy tomato crop. Usually we are giving them away, but not this year. I've had to get some from a friend. And the ones we have gotten are small. I doubt there will be any to dehydrate either.

It's right the opposite for us this year. For the past few years, our tomatoes haven't done much. This year, we're having a bumper crop. I think it's, because of all the rain, heat, and humidity. It's been really wet, since Spring. Another reason could be that we were really late getting them out. The ground was already heated up fairly well.
