Summertyme what about the Reabsorb or milk replacer powder? I used to use that on baby goats or those not doing well. Goat milk would be good too wouldn't it?

Goat milk replacer is terrible. The kids always wind up with scours. The only one we have ever used with any luck in does match. this year we mixes one gallon of whole milk from the store with one quart does match milk replacer and one can of evaporated milk. If only feeding one I would just use whole milk from the store.

When we had dairy cows, we tried various. milk replacers... for calves, only the top quality (read $$$$) were worth feeding. They still were abit cheaper than feeding saleable milk out of the tank. But we found they did so much better on whole milk that we took the money hit and fed whole milk for our last 30 years.

However, a quality milk replacer IS likely better than the ultra pasteurized stuff in the store... it won't coagulation into cheese, so it won't form a curd in their gut.

My opinion only: best is fresh raw whole milk from their own species. Second choice is a top quality milk replacer. And last is store-bought milk... for many species, it won't be adequate and will require doctoring with added sugar, fat or protein to make a homemade "formula" that will meet their needs.

If you must use store-bought milk, make sure its not ultra pasteurized, and add a bit of yogurt (with live cultures) to provide the probiotics that they'd get with the raw milk from their mother.

Judy... I would definitely at least feed the kid whole milk. Since you are just supplementing her, it should be fine (but they need the fat calories... even whole milk from the store is only 3.25% butterfat!

Sherree... great news, and truly it was what I expected to hear. I swear, the ability to find the tiniest anomaly has outpaced our common sense. I'm so glad you guys can take a big breath of relief and get on with your lives.

thanks, I've got whole milk and I've advised DH. DH is making sure she gets her share, but holding him back a bit, he's a bruser.

Just got back from a trip to town. I was supposed to get the oil changed in my van and the inspections sticker renewed. I blew it off and just went to three stores and the bank. the Dollar General nearest to me had no canning supplies and I forgot to look at walmart. God a few things at DT, Walmart and Dollar General, but didn't spend much, I simply did not need much of anything nor was I looking for something to want. There was no cornmeal to be found at walmart and DT had a one pound bag, I didn't get any. Corn products are going to continue to be in short supply. Kind of scary because there is corn something in so many products. Although I limit most of those kinds of products as I consider them unhealthy.

Had my one meal today, it was the new mcdonalds new crispy chicken sandwich, it has a lot of calories and frankly, the meal is just to much food. I won't get the meal again. LOL I avoid unhealthy things that most people eat regularly but I'll unhealthy fast food from time to time, go figure.

I was wondering, yesterday, if there was going to be a cornmeal shortage. I don't need any, but was wondering about it. When I use a 5lb bag, I buy one to replace it. I haven't been making a lot of cornbread, lately.

I order a 22 pound bucket from Amazon due to be delivered tomorrow. Sherree China is buying up our corn because of their crop failures and who know how many corn field acres in the USA they actually own. If you only replace a bag as you use it you may get caught with none available. It’s all about money and “they” care nothing about the people.

No real prepping planned for this week. I'm going to Sam's, Tuesday, for several items that are getting low in my pantry, and that's about it. I'm just working on maintaining what I already have. My regular grocery shopping won't be for another two weeks.
Southern BREEZE,

Did you know that there is a free food giveaway every Wednesday at noon time in the parking lot of a furniture store in downtown Tupelo?

It is part of Trump’s Farmers to Families program, and you really CAN just drive up there and get free food, paid for by the federal government - no paperwork, no “qualifying”, no strings attached.

It is, I suppose, the last gift Trump was able to leave the American people, as he signed the EO which funded this program to the tune of 1 and 1/2 billion dollars, on January 4’th Of 2021.

Typical food boxes contain things like fresh apples, potatoes, sweet potatoes, onions, cabbage, yogurt, cottage cheese, sour cream, one pound blocks of cheese, pre-cooked chicken, and a gallon of fresh milk. They do not have every one of those items in a box every week - for example, they usually offer either cottage cheese or else yogurt, for example. And they usually offer three of the five produce options I just listed. But every box will offer pre-cooked meat - usually chicken - and every box WILL offer a full gallon of fresh milk.

The program will only last till the end of April, so why not go out there next Wednesday and get some of the food gift Trump has left for you?

I just found out about the Tupelo food giveaways (since I don’t live in the area, I never thought to look into food giveaways in your neck of the woods).
which is why I never mentioned them to you before.

I sometimes get Trump food boxes here in the Memphis area. The same distributor (M Palazolo) services the Trump food drops in both Tupelo and Memphis.

And I do not know about Tupelo, but here in Memphis, they allow a single car or truck to get as many as 3 boxes at one time.

I wouldn't be worried one iota about China's or Japan's crop purchases - the bins are full and alot of it is crop from 2-3 seasons ago >>> the US can't begin to use a season's harvest in a single year - what these overseas deals do is give us food at bargain pricing - you wouldn't want to see what happens if the US farming gets really crippled ....

Farmers are happy right now because finally grain prices are going up. And yes we are exporting grain. But we have plenty.
Plenty of other stuff to be concerned about - - just not grain.

I understand what you're saying. Thing is, I already have 50 lbs in storage all in 5lb bags in buckets, my freezer, and canning jars, and have little room to store anymore. That's why I use the "use one, buy one" method. I've slacked way off making cornbread. During the summer, I rarely make it. Too hot to heat up the oven. 50lbs is plenty to do us a year or more.

Thanks for the info. Yes, we know about the program, but we thought it was only for those who live in the county. We don't. We live outside the Tupelo area a bit. Our county has the same general type of program, but we don't qualify, so it must not be the exact same program. My mom does, and she takes full advantage of it. Lots of times, she gets things that she won't eat, and shares them with us and others. When my sister passed a few weeks ago, Mom gave us 2 huge boxes of veggies, fruits, canned goods, etc. that she had received, but didn't want.

Mom also has a friend who receives food from another type of program in his county. When he goes, they load the back end of his pick up with boxes of all kinds of food. He shares that with Mom and other elderly people he knows. Sometimes, he brings Mom so much fresh produce, she has enough to put up in her freezer.

What!!! You don't have a Sun Oven? :)

Not anymore. I tried one several years ago, and didn't like it. I can make cornbread in our firepit using a Dutch oven, but it's too hot in the summer to do that, unless I have to. When it gets hot here, we eat more salads and sandwiches than anything else. I just buy dinner rolls for the larger meals. Pop Cary a couple or 3 in the toaster oven, and I'm done.

All summer long I use our Sun Oven to bake just about everything because I like it better than the regular oven. Keeps things much more moist and is very forgiving if you forget and over-bake.

I've never tasted anything cooked in a Sun Oven. When I was trying mine, nothing ever got done, and I had to finish cooking it in my regular oven.

My wife has never used our Sun Oven but she does ask me to use it to bake some things for her because of it keeping things more moist.
I don't use it for some things. It is not big enough inside to do some of the things we often bake. Also I never do cookies in it due to having to do only small batches at a time so it is slow to do all the cookies. Also unlike a regular oven that comes back up to temp again quickly after being opened the Sun Oven is much slower to get back to temp.
But overall I am happy I bought it.

I’ve got a small sun oven that I’ve never used, it’s not like the nice ones that I’ve seen. If it’s too hot to use the oven in the house I’ve got my gas stove out in my screened in camper porch/summer kitchen.

I like using our camp stove oven, but it only cooks small batches at a time, too. I can use it indoors and outdoors.

It doesn't get that warm at our house so it is fine baking in the regular oven in the summer.
And summer is not here yet, it was 25* this morning.

Our summer isn't here, yet, either. Try 100+ with a heat index of 112+. We don't use the AC much during the summer, and with those temps, anything that adds heat to the house isn't used very often. We make it fine with only a fan, and open windows. Yeah, we're climatized.

This too shall pass.
I needed chick starter today, and all they had was the expensive stuff (Purina, twenty bucks a bag; organic, even higher). I couldn't use the Purina because it's medicated and I'm feeding some ducklings and goslings as well as the chicks, and didn't want the organic, so I got game bird starter, 30% protein. I'll mix it with the one bag of regular (unmedicated) chick starter I still have here to bring the protein content down a bit. But the thing was, I talked to an employee, and she said that the chick starter is flying off the shelves. Said it comes in on the truck, and goes right out the door. So I found out when the next truck will be in and will go back and get some more. I suspect a lot more people are raising chicks this year than normal, and probably more of them. (I wouldn't normally be raising as many as I've got.) So that's an indication, IMO, that people are trying to get a little better prepared.

Oh, heavens Southern Breeze, there are folks from McNairy County, Tennessee who go down to Tupelo for the Farmers to Families food boxes at that furniture store! The food boxes are paid for with federal dollars, not local ones, so you are as welcome there as the next person in line.

My WM has all kinds of chicken supplies, including starter. It's a lot cheaper than the feed store. I think a lot of people don't know that, the chicken section is always stocked.

Like I said, we didn't know it was available to us. That's our fault for not checking into it more. I guess we missed out on a great opportunity. Didn't you say the program ends this month?

We went to a yard sale at the church yesterday. I added to my preps with: a camping mat $4, 6 stick candles for $2, 4 DVDs for $2, and 7 pillow cases for $2. The fellow that I bought the candles from laughingly said you can add those to your stash of candles, to which I said "of course" and we both laughed.

It was raining and they yard sale was in the fellowship hall. We stayed awhile and visited and came away feeling happy. We need to get out more.

We've been working in the yard all day. Taking a break right now. I have all of my azaleas set out, and everything on that front looks nice, even better than before. We've also been piling up sections of the downed tree in our front yard. Cary has a huge fire going, and we're continuing to feed it with more of the tree. It's cleaning up really well, too. One more good day working on the tree, burning it, will finish it off. Then, Cary will be able to mow that section of our yard again. It's so nice being able to be outside doing things. Warm temps, today, but we have a possible freeze/frost advisory in our near forecast, I think for Wednesday night.

Cary also got a chance to talk to the neighbor who lives in Huntsville, AL, today. He owns the 80+ acres that surround our property. All old growth timber. He's usually here every weekend that it's nice. He gave us permission to use his dirt road that runs through his property to walk on. That's going to give us a nice walking area for exercise that hasn't be available to us. We would have to drive somewhere, before now. Nice to have a walking tract starting right in our back yard! We'll have to watch out for those timber rattlers and copperheads, though. Always armed.

Neighbor has no structures on his property, but told Cary, today, that he was thinking of buying an RV, pulling it onto the back side of the property, and living in it. He's like minded as we are, and just wants to be left alone. He's single, and a 4th cousin of mine. He's not the type to cause us any trouble.

All in all, it's been a good day!

Wasted time and gas this morning. I wanted to go to the local chapter of 'the well-armed woman' which is about 35 miles away. Road to the complex was a mess - almost got stuck twice (would have had I not had 4 wheel drive) and never did find the group. I guess I got to spend some time in thought and prayer while driving - and maybe that was the whole point. The last few days at work have been mentally exhausting, so maybe that was just what I needed.

We got quite abit of snow the last few days - all melted now, but the garden is muddy and not the best for working at the moment. DH bought a new planter - it holds trays of cardboard cells that you can plant ahead of time, then almost works like a direct seeder to put the chains of cells into the ground (as I understand it). We like to try new things to find what works best (and smartest, rather than hardest) for us.

As far as my very short April list -
- so far, I"ve eaten 4 times at work - and once of those was free as it was Easter.
- went to see Mom and kids - neighbor took great care of plants and chickens.
- have not been able to work on carpet due to weather, but it's still in the plans.

Both DH and I are just beat. No energy at all - I hope this doesn't last long, there's a lot to get done.

Grandsons both learned how to ride their bikes yesterday! That's a sort of prep.
One has a birthday this week.
Believe it or not we are forecast 3-5 inches snow on Tuesday.
Boys took a very nice gift bag to our little librarian, she gave them a free book.
The boys donated an extra copy we got of "Something in the woods" dvd. She put it on the site so they enjoyed that.
It's a fun family movie about a big foot story in Texas.
Got a few things coming up but they are cold weather stuff.
We have a planter like that. He likes it but I don't. I would rather plant by hand and I have done a pretty large area that way. I think the seeds get settled better and I always get more plants.

That's interesting! I've never seen stuff like that in a Walmart -- what section is it in?

Kathleen

As Wanderlore said, with the pet supplies. Minne has a whole aisle that is devoted mostly to chickens, but also has livestock supplies. There is usually an entire end cap that has either chick starter or oyster shell on it. Having backyard chickens is really trendy here.

Just when I think I am done prepping, today I realized should get extra nuts, washers, and bolts. Placed orders for 100 count packs of many things on ebay.
As I typed the above I just thought about additional leather snaps and rivets. Back to order more stuff. Might as well use the stimulus money.
