CRISIS Ammo shortage about to get even worse

Do you have to pay a hazmat fee to ship primers?
I would assume that to be a yes.

You may be able to go to an online seller, and whether or not it is in stock, should have an asterisk or something indicating Hazardous Fee.

If so, not sure it is worth the purchase for like a single case of primers.

BTW to those who recommend dry firing for practice. It is a very good idea, go for it. EXCEPT in a .22 or other NON center fire pistol or rifle. You'll damage the firing pin, and or the chamber edge, where the lip of the cartridge contacts the the cut inset for the cartridge.

'Course one of two times won't hurt, but continues dry firing will.

That's a good idea, but notice in your picture, they are all centerfire primers. LOL
Well, the photo/link was just for illustrative purposes. I suggest the use of snap caps in any dry-fire exercise regardless of caliber. :chg:

Bah. I'm a bit disgusted with myself. Wish I had picked up more .22 shorts. Looks like I'm going to have to spend some time sitting out popping skunks in the next few days.

To my credit, I DID pick up a "few" extra boxes from Black Hills (love those guys) to feed Great Grandpa's Winchester .38-40 a couple months back. That little thing makes the handiest grab-and-go brush gun ever invented. Fed our family venison and whatnot for 6 generations and counting.

I would also say that most if not all 5.56/.223/7.62 ammo being made today is being sold to the US military. They are still in active combat in several places and also still training recruits to shoot. And probably stockpiling ammo, materials to reload.

I’ve used laser training cartridge, you can find them on Amazon about $37 work well.

Yeah I figured, and then the thought struck me as to "are there some for 22LR"?

Dry firing is a great way to smooth out your movement, trigger pull, etc. (and not shoot yourself)

But don't think it helps in hitting the target. For instance:

I have a 30 foot practice range in my back yard. That's the distance from my front door to my back door. I can sit and bullseye targets all day, with any of my pistols.

However, a week or so ago, my dog on our nightly "checking the perimeter" walk (so he can empty his bladder) he treed a Copperhead snake. It was 9:00 PM - meaning dark

Copperhead's are usually a slender snake, and in this case due to surrounding back ground, I needed to shoot him in a right to left position, instead of stretching out long ways in front of me.

I wanted to take the shot just out of striking distance so around 10 feet. Making the point of impact different than at 30 feet for which the pistol was sighted for.

Being mindful of that fact, and at night with a flashlight, AND the most important one of all, if he moved in my direction I would have to move, and move quickly.

Took 8 shots. 3rd shot grazed him, kill shot was No. 8. A defender bullet in a 9MM and the only thing left at the kill shot was skin down the sides, holding the upper to the lower body.

And I'm not a bad shot. Killed a chicken snake about a month ago same conditions with one shot from my EDC.

So really, really need to spend some time on the range at the 10 foot mark. In a shootout with a person an inch low or high, no big deal. But with a poisonous snake, it means an entire miss.

And with bullets, etc.. in short supply, I don't want to use them up for that. And it's going to take actual bullets being sent down range to get that right.

So dry fire etc. is good, but bullets better.

On the dry-fire .22, save some expended cases. I have a 4-sided awl that I use to punch a hole in the base. That tells me I have a dummy round in, and the square hole lets me rotate the case with the awl from time to time to get fresh rim.

You can make a laser dry-fire indicator for about $15, if you're reasonably handy.

A while back I picked up an SCCY CPX2 subcompact, 9mm, hammer-fired pistol after reading rave reviews.

It had a lot more muzzleflip than my G26 and had terrible, finger-numbing triggerslap.
Customer serice was no help, so I worked on it for a while, but then decided to trim the grip to a Glock profile and use it for training (hammer-fired= no recocking every shot).
At $120 +/- for a training implement it isn't too bad. It can still fire, but makes a much better trainer than a firearm.
I can easily practice mag changes, sight alignment, trigger discipline, and trigger press (which is a couple pounds heavier than a stock Glock, making my carry gun seem almost match-grade).
I dry fire while watching YT (firing at faces), and my training time has gone waaay up, with more clicks and less racks.

One of these days I may port the barrel and slide to reduce muzzle flip (worse than my old 1911's were) and get a spring kit for the trigger, but it seems a waste to sink more money into that particular hole.....

Also, I don't use snap caps in it.

Only worry about what you can control!
I'm set... Planned ahead with primers, bullets, brass, powder and extra dies and pins... We always planned for this, talked about this, practiced for this and after so many let downs many of us weren't sure we'd ever live through this... But here it is and it has every potential to get worse by the day... May God come quickly.

To purchase primers (and/or powder) from a supplier, yes, you pay a haz-mat shipping fee unless they have some kind of special sale/deal running (and they're paying it, kind of like "free" shipping).

The LWVOH (little white van of happiness, aka FedEx)) just made what is likely its last 'heavy drop' here. A half case (500 rounds) of Barnaul .300AAC, ordered from Classic on 28 July. Yes, Russian steel case. No, their stock is all gone now.

Things are getting crayzee out there.

Was told that Cheaper than Dirt had ammo. How do you feel about a dollar or so a round for 5.56? Maybe 9mm at close to a buck a round?
I hope you got your stuff now including training ammunition.
Very few people have a lifetime supply of ammo. Good for 6 months - 2 years? Sure! A life time with training ammo.... doubtful.

Is that the "other" side of BBTOJ?

Yes :D

My FedEx driver confided a couple of weeks ago that when he gets nervous, he orders ammo too :D

Jim's is just down the road from me. Their indoor range is closed and has been for a while. They jacked up their prices as soon as the madness happened and the prices jumped in the first couple of weeks from wholesellers, but have leveled out. I got in two cases of 9mm yesterday, the price was the same and I put them out for $15 a box of 50rds.

Yes, the manufacturers are having problems getting components. But I am still getting ammo in every week. We are not jacking up our prices and we are not putting limits on it. We just don't know what we will get day to day.

I talked to Black Hills, and they have a million round backlog on orders. I order 4k of blemished 5.56 and got it in last week. Black Hills ammo is expensive for sure, but match grade, you get what you pay for.
Do you have a source for small rifle primers? I can’t find any!

Just ran through magazine of 300BLK confirming sights were spot on at various distances,
along with a dozen 12 ga rounds, sighting in shockwave w/ laser for variety of buck ammo.

Shortest duration trip to my personal range popping caps in my lifetime, so far...

Home brew dry fire laser indicator. Vox module and quad-AAA pack in a box - $10. Audio male/male 1/8" cable of whatever length you like. Guts of a drug store laser pointer CAREFULLY ALIGNED and glued in a brass tube sized to the barrel - about $2 per gun. Adjust the vox sensitivity to trip on the trigger click, and sub a resister to give it under .05 second duration. Don't put a live round behind it!

I so wanted to build a pistol on the .300 platform as well, but due to the ammo situation, I couldn't justify adding another caliber. Went with 5.56 so I could feed the little critter. Babies are easy and relatively cheap to make, feeding them their entire life is a whole 'nuther story.
