Four died when a semi struck a Saturn Outlook during a traffic stop on I-77 South in Ashland County. This dash cam video from the Ohio Highway Patrol captured the collision.
Warning: the footage depicts a violent traffic crash.
ASHLAND — “Pull off the road, pull off the road,” an Ohio Highway Patrol trooper urges the driver of a Saturn Outlook on Interstate 71 just south of Ashland.
The driver, who was being pulled over for speeding, had slowed to a stop in the far right lane of the highway. Flashing red and blue lights and the patrol car’s headlights illuminate the scene.
“Go onto the shoulder, the right shoulder,” the trooper continues over his loudspeaker.
Within seconds, just as the SUV begins to move, a semitrailer slams into the vehicle from behind, pushing it further down and off the right side of the highway through a grassy area and into a treeline.
The trooper calls for emergency medical help while the semi and the Saturn are still in motion. The semi lands on top of the Saturn.
The horrific Wednesday night scene was captured on video by the trooper’s dash camera. The footage was later released by the Ohio Department of Public Safety.
Of the Saturn’s seven occupants, four died at the scene, the patrol said. The three others were transported by helicopter and EMS to area hospitals with injuries that were not life-threatening.
Names had not been released as of Friday afternoon. However, Sgt. Ray Santiago, the patrol’s Northeast Ohio public information officer, had said the group was from out of state. He said some of the passengers were under age 18, and that the seven travelers were not all from one family, though there were family members aboard.
The truck driver, Charles C. Hunt, 54, of Van Buren, Indiana, was treated at Ashland Samaritan Hospital.
The crash remained under investigation and no charges had been filed as of Friday.
