abby normal

Whoever called this the "new normal " was way off. They should call it the "new weird " because every day is like the twilight zone and there's no rhyme or reason to it.

Went to Aldi in central Ohio yesterday. The county I live in, and the county I travel to for groceries, combined- have had 4 deaths from corona. I never liked masks, but at this point I've established that driving to the store is statistically riskier than going maskless. But I digress...

Since visiting this store a month ago there is new and increased signage about masks and social distancing. Despite our state's order exempting kids under 10 from masks, Aldi was requiring any kids over age 2 to wear them. A couple monthsago it was common to see store employees wiping down carts but I haven't seen that in quite a while, though some stores have supplies available should the customer want to do so. But again I digress.

We enter the store sans masks as is our habit. Thankfully it was not crowded, since I do like to give people space out of courtesy. About 25% of the customers were not wearing masks, compared to my last trip to Kroger where everyone but me and DH were masked. The Amish are still not masking.

Everything seemed well stocked for the most part with some thin areas. Limits on meat have returned.

At the checkout my total comes up with. 99 due for the change part, told the cashier she could keep the penny due to coin shortage. She actually gave me change... I know it was only a penny but I was surprised.

Went to my local H-E-B last night for a few things. The shelves were getting that "decimated" look again. Long areas of bare shelves across a wide variety of products. Long sections of the freezer cases empty. Paper products (that is, paper plates and bowls) completely gone. Canned veggies mostly gone. Dairy with significant holes. Getting grim at that store. I made a comment to the checkout girl about the outages. Her response was, "Yeah, we're not getting enough of what we order."

Tick tock.

Went to Aldi in Piedmont, NC yesterday...waltzing in without a mask...no problem. Most items were in stock although some stock levels were lower than usual...although I had not been since mid-March, so what do I know? :-) No lunchmeat; hamburger 3.99/lb for 73% fat; other meats available but not highly stocked yet adequate. Fresh fruit and vegetables were in good supply with prices not much higher than several weeks ago. Will the hammer fall here soon? No way to know, of course, so always preparing in the event it does. Gov. gives update today as to whether some of the restrictions are lifted...with his permission. Guessing, we'll stay the same for another 3 weeks to get to the end of August. Then, they only have 2 more months to keep us pinned down. :-(

Went to Walmart yesterday cause I wanted some queso blanco and tortillas for a snack. No jars of queso blanco anywhere!!! Also haven’t been able to get Johnsonville sausages in weeks!!! And husband noticed there was absolutely no sour cream left.

RE: Lunchmeat - You can do a superb roast in the oven in one hour or bake a ham and then slice it as thin as you like and package up portions in ziploc freezer bags to use as needed. It's not time consuming and you can make far better quality lunch meat this way than the nitrate & water filled processed lunch meats sold in the store anyway (and at lower cost per lb too). Good quality electric meat slicers are available on Amazon for as low as $70.

I've actually done this before. I portion out 4 ozs, drop them into standard foldover sandwich bags, then place multiple of said bags into a 1 gallon ziplock freezer bag from which all air has been smooshed. Keep for months with no freezer burn.

The last groceries I bought was a pick up order from Walmart a month ago. There were 10 substitutions with our last order. I am currently working on another pick up order and I'm getting "Max 1" on the majority of items. We don't shop very often so I need to get more than one on certain grocery items. I'm thinking about just going into town to our small grocery store instead. It will cost more but hopefully they are better stocked.

Two words. Two of the most wonderful sammich words in the English language:
Meatloaf Sammiches.

Oh yes. My mom made nice meatloaf and we'd do sammiches from it. I put mayo and sliced sweet gherkins (with sugar, no HFCS) on mine. A little salt and pepper -- sammy heaven.

-------------------

We went to Winn-Dixie (FL) yesterday for a bunch of stuff. Everything looked pretty good except for the canned veggie section (like all over, right?). NO PEAS except the very expensive Le Seuer (sp?) baby peas, and I'm not paying that -- almost $2 a can. Nope. Got a couple of cans each of different types of green beans and corn though. I have that stuff in the freezer anyway.

Oh, and they did have soup -- Campbell's was on "sale" -- 2/$4, which is no bargain, but better than the single can price. Got a couple of those and a couple cans of the regular Campbell's tomato soup, which was on "sale" for 99 cents a can.

Food prices........... sigh. :(

I’m predicting the shortages are going to ramp up with a run on the stores because of the three, separate fires/explosions in the Middle East yesterday/today.

The two Walmart's I use (one on far NE side and other on far NW side of my AO) have been gave me several limit 1 only on my order last week. On many can goods it was a limit of 2 for all of June and July, but the last order I put in and picked up several of the limit 2's had dropped to limit 1 or out of stock.

Only had one or two out of stocks at pickup time. One was 90% rubbing alcohol, which I haven't been able to get at either store since way back in April. Other was a brand that I wouldn't allow substitution.

That's like finding gold these days. CVS finally got some 70% in but my son says he can only use 90% to clean his computer stuffies, etc.

Can't find it anywhere.

It actually depends on who you ask. Personally, I think any 80 proof or higher alcohol would do. Others say it has to be the 190 proof stuff like Everclear. I'd use the 80 proof and be done with it.

In a pinch you can use 190 proof Everclear grain alcohol. Surprisingly both of the closest Wal Marts have had it in stock throughout this whole time but...

... it's a little pricey for my pocketbook and it is 95% alcohol and 5% water.

Trying to hang out with the cool kids.
Shopped at my local "Jewel" today. Meat and veggies well stocked. Paper goods were plentiful. Spotted "new name" generic type of toilet paper and paper towels. Soup selection was ok. Did not look for canned veggies today.

What blew me away was an endcap of small 2 oz bottles of "no name" hand sanitizer for $2.49 !!!!! You know the little ones you used to get 2 for $1.00 at the dollar store!
This is DuPage county IL.

Saw a recipe online for homemade queso blanco. It's just milk, a little vinegar, a little salt. I'm going to make some tomorrow to see how it goes. I like the Rico's brand at $2.99/can. It's going to be interesting to see the yield on the homemade. It calls for a gallon of milk but I'm only going to use a quart to see how I like it. Plus, it sounds like fun! Here's a link

If it turns out well, I'll predict that several of us will be clamoring for the recipe & instructions.

When we have a cow in milk, dh makes it twice a week. Good stuff. The man doesn't know what a recipe is, and he never measures anything.

Is walmart online's search function broken for anyone else?

I've tried to update my cart for a couple days and just get an error message...
