My wife and I were on the north shore of Superior yesterday, and she found this. About 2" across. The dark grey is very hard, as is the tan specks, which oddly are very rectilinear.

What in the world is this? How did it form?

I was thinking along the same line, looks like asphalt/tar with wood shavings or chips in it.

I figured it was an aggregate of SOME kind, just in a black matrix.

Or basalt porphyry since he found it on the north shore of Lake Superior.

I had just cut some of these yesterday and yes they light up under UV light, because it is daylight I had to stand in the cupboard with the UV torch and they are really interesting. I was going to carve them in the form of Dalmatian dogs because of the spottiness of the stone.

Yes Aggregations formed with basalts and rolled with water and ice, found in moraines, rivers, lakes, beaches. Mainly found as composites of basalts, porphyries, and andesites. It is complex but really interesting, for some ... the full explanation is not so simple.

It's pretty hot here too, and was on the north shore as well. We've had mid to high 90s for about two weeks, and just recently the dew point finally went down. So, you're not alone.

Yup ... the right side one on the first pic. The difference is ours has been naturally polished by the lake waves. Never seen anything like it before.

Well, your heart was certainly in the right place, trying.

Superior’s north shore is sure where I would have gone to (hopefully) escape, had I the immediate means.....

well, yes indeedy, I did.....this came from panning moss and "the TURD". Yes, it's small...but finding your own gold...is way better than finding easter eggs as a kid

baahaahaaa.....I had to look that up....thanks, I learned a new word.....I belonged to a prospecting group, we laughed because the rock I found looked like fossilized poo.....I crushed that dang coprolite into itty bitty sand particles, and panned them..... it was my lucky poo, I guess

Not much gold in Pennsylvania. Gold in coprolites must be extremely rare.
