WATCH LIVE: Lawmakers speak as Senate nears deal on coronavirus stimulus bill after partisan clashes
•Started streaming 5 hours ago

Washington Post

Senate leaders and the Trump administration neared a bipartisan agreement Monday night on a massive stimulus bill that could inject $2 trillion into the economy to blunt the impacts of the coronavirus. After a day of partisan rancor and posturing on Capitol Hill, the outlook grew markedly more positive later in the afternoon, when offers and counteroffers were exchanged
I think Schumer looks especially venal today. He is going full snark mode while his constituents are now dying at the rate of 2 to 5 PER HOUR WHILE HE STRUTS AROUND DC LIKE A PEACOCK?

Los Angeles sheriff orders all gun stores shut down, and instructs deputies to enforce closures

Gun stores in Los Angeles have been declared a nonessential business and have been forced to close, L.A. County Sheriff Alex Villanueva said in a statement Tuesday.

Villanueva also announced the department will add 1,300 deputies to beef up patrols.

"There are hundreds of businesses which, through no fault of their own, do not fall under the Governor’s definition of critical infrastructure," the sheriff said. "As a result, I have instructed my deputies to enforce closures of businesses which have disregarded the Governor’s order (gun stores, strip clubs, and other non-designated businesses)."

This directive comes after reports that gun stores in Los Angeles have seen an increase in sales due to coronavirus concerns.

Spanish soldiers discover abandoned retirement homes +++ China to ease restrictions | Corona Update

•Mar 24, 2020

DW News

In Spain, the defence ministry says soldiers helping to fight the Coronavirus pandemic have found elderly patients in retirement homes abandoned and, in some cases, dead in their beds. Prosecutors have launched an investigation. Our correspondent Jan-Philipp Scholz has been listening to how Spanish people have been coping with more than a week in lockdown. Meanwhile Hubei, the province at the centre of China's coronavirus outbreak is to lift travel restrictions on Wednesday. The 50 million people of Hubei province have been under lockdown for two months. Those in the capital Wuhan will have to wait another two weeks before they're allowed to travel. But the easing of retsrictions seems to be a sign of progress in China's battle to defeat the coronavirus.

iirc---I believe someone posted a GREAT video a while back on this thread about a nurse DEMONSTRATING how ONE ventilator could be used on up to FOUR people.

Why aren't they doing THAT????

Creative solutions to acquire more ventilator capacity

Meanwhile, hospitals are looking at creative solutions. Dr. Alain Gauthier, an anesthetist at the Perth and Smiths Falls District Hospital, has rigged up ventilators to be able to ventilate two patients at once instead of one.

He did that by following YouTube videos created by two Detroit doctors in 2006.

"At one point we may not have other options," Dr. Gauthier told CBC News. "The option could be well, we let people die or we give that a chance."

Finally got the guidance for 65 and older to self isolate for 14 days. I started yesterday! I told my boss I just couldn't take the risk any more. She said she completely understood...

Today 3/24/20
Global cases surpass 400,000

Figures collected by Johns Hopkins University suggest 407,485 have been infected and, since the data is based partially on official releases, the true extent could be even greater. The institution says 18,227 people have died, while 104,234 have recovered.

===

Yesterday 3/23/20:

Here is a reminder of the incredible rate at which the spread of the coronavirus is accelerating.

Earlier, the World Health Organization explained it in these simple terms:

  • It tool 67 days from the first reported case or Covid-19 until the first 100,000 cases were confirmed
  • It took 11 days for until the second 100,000 cases were confirmed
  • It took just four days for until the third 100,000 cases were confirmed

===

So now it's one day to advance 100k?

===
.
Tom, we are now at 100,000 every two days. Monday/Tuesday and 100,000 prt day, globally for wednesday. It will then take 5 days to add 500,000 which is the total of the 67 days, the 11, then the 4 and next the 2 and finally the 1. It took 85 days to reach the FIRST 500,000 AND 5 DAYS TO REACH THE SECOND 500,000 FOR ONE MILLION IN 3 MONTHS, 90 DAYS TOTAL, IF MY MATH IS OKAY

Coronavirus outbreak: Trudeau (Canada) addresses sweeping new powers proposed in COVID-19 legislation | FULL

•Streamed live 5 hours ago
Global News

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau says proposed sweeping new powers to let the government spend money without parliamentary approval are needed because the coronavirus pandemic presents an “exceptional situation.” Speaking with reporters in his daily briefing outside Rideau Cottage, where he is in self-isolation, Trudeau was questioned on proposals that Global News first reported were contained in a draft version of the coronavirus support bill set to be tabled on Tuesday in the House of Commons. Those include broad new powers to authorize the federal cabinet to spend money until December 2021, and in some cases without any time limits at all, without having to put their proposals to a vote in the House of Commons.

Stupid question time; we keep hearing of various locales adopting "shelter in place" . How does this apply to getting in a car and driving 900 miles and only getting out to get gas or sleep?
900 miles is 2 tanks of gas, 15 hours driving time, one hotel, 2 or 3 piss stops, 1 or 2 poop stops, and four meals.
you start out with one tank at home, get the second tank about 8 hours later which can be combined with the hotel stop, shit stop, meal stop. And then you can combine your remaining 3 meal stops with piss stops.
So that is five stops and five counties you need to research to determine whether you can stop or be fined, arrested or impounded.
I recommend a catheter and an ice chest to save you a lot of hassel.

I can see someone blaming the Spanish government for the deaths..... you told us to stay home, so it isn't our fault those old people died....

Tell me I am wrong....

Georgia health system asks other hospitals for assistance because it's "quickly reaching a critical mass"

From CNN’s Angela Barajas

Phoebe Putney Health System, in southwest Georgia, is now reporting roughly a third of the deaths in the state.

CEO Scott Steiner said in a statement that the hospital system is "quickly reaching a critical mass."

Steiner went on to say the health system's main hospital “has been more severely impacted by COVID-19 than any other hospital in Georgia, and our entire health system is one of the hardest hit in the state."

Phoebe Putney Health System has asked other hospitals to take in its Covid-19 and non-COVID patients.

"Several hospitals that currently are not being severely impacted by the COVID-19 public health emergency have agreed to accept patients from our main hospital to free up capacity for our ever-growing number of COVID-19 patients," a Putney spokesperson said.

The hospital is currently awaiting the results of more than 1,000 people who were tested for coronavirus.

They screwed this up.... self isolation and then cut the power and phone lines.... things would be going much better in Canada if they did.

Also side note: if you are in self isolation, do not have reporters come to your place of self isolation to talk..... just saying

Second story; my niece works in the hospital cafeteria in Hancock county, Indiana. She’s scared to death too.

They’ve totally cleared out two wings to reserve for covid patients only, and help with overflow from other hospitals when needed.

Poor girl, she calls my sister every night checking on her and to just say hello to her mom, actually.

That's what it is, though 16 hrs is more like it. The question I was asking was whether folk thought I would be able to successfully get all the way without being 'fined, arrested or impounded', as you say.

Went to pick up some gardening items today. First was Bi Mart. Once again ammo is cleaned out. Interestingly however I seem to be ahead of the curve so far in that garden seeds and all sorts of planting items that have anything to do with food are rapidly disappearing now. Picked up the few items I need to greenhouse. Wokeness is occurring in waves. Oh, and Winco is slowly getting worse with the emptying of shelves. No more bulk food purchases for you cause- Chinese Flu!

TWTFS.
Would you mind giving us a general idea of where you're located? State? Thanks in advance!

Florida governor plans to expand order mandating self-isolation for travelers from New York City area
From CNN’s Rosa Flores and Sara Weisfeldt

The Florida Channel

The Florida Channel

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis announced he plans to expand the executive order he issued for travelers from the New York City area.

During a news conference Tuesday, DeSantis said anyone who has traveled from the New York City area to Florida in the last three weeks will need to self-isolate and also provide a list of people they have been in close contact with in Florida.

Travelers will also have to provide an address in Florida where they will self-isolate.

DeSantis said he will sign the expansion to the executive order Tuesday.

DeSantis said that members of the Florida National Guard were at Miami International Airport and Fort Lauderdale on Tuesday, providing information to travelers from New York, New Jersey and Connecticut in compliance with the executive order he issued Monday, which requires travelers from those states to self-isolate for 14 days. DeSantis added that the effort will be expanded to smaller airports as well.

The surgeon general of Florida will be issuing a health advisory that encourages anyone 65 or older to stay home for the next 14 days. Also anyone with chronic conditions —regardless of age —is encouraged to stay home.

DeSantis also announced an expansion of the group gathering guidance to no social or recreational groups of 10 people or more, even in private residences.

Remember there is no such thing as a stupid question,,

But there incredibly stupid people!!!

Taking a long road trip would subject you to whatever level of hassle each state might have. Would expect State Troopers checking cars on state lines, anyone rolling around.

Is there a way to check all cause mortality, month to month? I want to compare the all cause mortality rate from recent months to last year. I have suspicions that a lot of pneumonia and heart attacks were just swept away as normal. But we wouldn't know unless we compare year to year.

Has anyone actually hears of any road blocks/ checks yet? I would get going as soon as possible. Bring food with you. Piss on the side of the road and nap in the vehicle. If you are going home then I think if you get stopped and show ID that you are going home you would be fine.

Italy's coronavirus death toll rises steeply again but rate of new infections offers hope
24 March 2020 fair use

Italy reported a sharp rise in its coronavirus death toll on Tuesday, with 743 more victims, breaking a two-day trend that had fuelled hopes the epidemic may be slowing in the country. However there was some more positive news.

There had been 601 deaths reported on Monday, and 651 on Sunday.
But Tuesday's daily toll was the second-highest recorded in Italy since the crisis began.
Civil protection agency figures showed that, while the number of new cases was up on Monday's figure, the infection rate was slightly lower.

There were 5,249 new cases reported on Tuesday, meaning there have now been more than 69,000 cases confirmed in the country since the outbreak began just over a month ago.

This figure includes 6,820 deceased patients, and 8,326 who have recovered, meaning there are currently 54,030 active cases.
Almost 900 people had recovered in the past 24 hours, the figures showed.

Despite the rise in deaths, there was some evidence that the coronavirus infection rate may be slowing thanks to national quarantine measures.

As a percentage, the rate of officially-registered new infections was just eight percent - the same as Monday and the lowest level since Italy registered its first death on February 21.

The number of new infections had been as high as 50 percent at the start of March.
Health officials are poring over every new piece of data to see whether two weeks of bans and closures have made a dent in the crisis.

The harshest restrictions are theoretically due to expire on Wednesday evening, although the government is all but certain to extend them in some form for weeks or even months.

"The measures we took two weeks ago are starting to have an effect," civil protection service chief Angelo Borrelli said earlier on Tuesday.

He said more data over the next few days will help show "if the growth curve is really flattening."
