Original pneumonia will be viral, you are correct, but it is not uncommon (it has happened to me) for lungs already deep in a viral infection to catch a bacterial one ON TOP OF the original virus.

Also, it is not uncommon for someone to catch bacterial pneumonia AFTER they recover from the viral version but their lungs are still weak and they catch a bacterial strain.

So this would a secondary condition, which is another reason for NOT using antibiotics unless the person tests positive for a bacterial infection too and/or is in serious danger/has a history of getting them.

In a rationing situation,I'm betting only people who test positive for secondary bacterial infections will get antibiotics and mostly thta will be inside of hospitals.
Thank you for finally explaining to be why my doctor insisted for a full year after I had viral pneumonia in college, to show up if I got so much as a sniffle of any kind. More importantly for those reading here, this means that if you do get this thing, and it does descend into pneumonia... Be very very careful for months afterwards of your health. Opportunistic infections of bacterial kinds will probably be waiting for you.

This may have been covered I am pages away from getting current but the name change.

The name change is not for you and I. We already have some grounding so the bait and switch will be a search pain for us.

The WHO is likely following instructions from or for China. Say in a week or 2 if people start searches for the WuFlu2.0 name they won’t have as great a chance of pulling in vids of welding doors and people dropping over or worse dropping and convulsing.

Mentioned at work cause have family member in China and heard from coworker
‘ I heard the regular flu is more of a danger this year for us’

The sheeple have no freakin clue and if the situation moves into a not just China issue for regular folks they will panic as a mass horde.

This is Dr Steven Hatfill two weeks ago...
Virologist: Overseas Production of Vaccines Makes U.S. Vulnerable

Whole article is worth reading, but here's one snippet, regarding WHO;

Hatfill does not put his faith in large bureaucratic organizations such as the World Health Organization (WHO).

“The WHO are useless,” he told Breitbart News in a telephone interview. “These are the same people who gave us the 2014 Ebola pandemic. Absolutely useless. The bureaucrats are subject to the wishes of their subscribers – China puts pressure on them.”

“And they admit it. They admitted the other day that, yes, they delayed too long,” he said. “I don’t listen to anything they say.”

As Breitbart News reported Wednesday, WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus blamed “human error” for the U.N. agency’s initial decision to minimize the global threat of the deadly coronavirus.

1000 People Told to "Self Quarantine" in Los Angeles

Los Angeles County public health nurses are closely monitoring all residents who recently traveled to mainland China, regardless of whether they have any symptoms of the coronavirus, the county's top health official said Tuesday.

More than 1,000 people fall into that category and each has been assigned a public health nurse and asked to self-isolate and not to go to work or school for 14 days, Department of Public Health Director Barbara Ferrer told the Board of Supervisors.

"This is an aggressive effort to touch all the people who've come into L.A. County," Ferrer said.

DPH is also reaching out to employers and schools and asking them to accommodate the travelers with flexible leave and the ability to manage school or work at home.

"It's a very small number of people ... but nonetheless those people need all of our support," Ferrer said.

Federal directives affecting travelers went into effect Feb. 2, and notices about symptoms to watch for were posted two and a half weeks ago.

"We've had 100% cooperation from travelers," she said.

Supervisor Janice Hahn said she knew of at least one resident who returned from China and was asked not to come into work. Ferrer said any traveler who has any concerns and was not screened at the airport can reach out via 211 to be assigned a DPH contact.

Supervisor Hilda Solis said she was worried about discrimination, as well as anxiety caused by the pandemic, especially for residents with family in China.

"So many fears have been cultivated based on racial profiling," Solis said, citing the case of a young boy who was beaten up or bullied because of a perceived connection to the virus.

The coronavirus -- now dubbed COVID-19 by the World Health Organization -- was first identified by the Chinese government on Dec. 31, when authorities indicated an unknown pneumonia variant was impacting residents of Hubei province.

Globally, more than 43,000 people have contracted the coronavirus and 1,018 people -- two of them outside of mainland China -- have died as a result.

"The numbers are staggering," Ferrer said, but she stressed that the number of patients remains low in the United States, with 13 confirmed cases nationwide. Of those, seven are in California, including one each in Los Angeles, Orange and San Diego counties.

"It's safe to keep patronizing our Chinese vendors," Ferrer said. "There is no reason for us to take the fear to a level that is not supported by any science."

All but two of the 13 U.S. cases are people who traveled to China. The remaining two are spouses of those travelers. Less than 1% of confirmed cases worldwide are outside of China.

Ferrer said DPH workers are coordinating on "multiple calls every day with our federal and state partners," including the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the Department of Defense.

She acknowledged that additional cases are likely, given continuing travel from China. Ferrer also noted that the majority of deaths from COVID-19, as with the flu, are related to an underlying health condition. In China, an additional issue seems to be that people are having trouble accessing care, she said, though information from China is limited and the government there has refused help from the CDC.

"In the Hubei province, they are overwhelmed with people who are sick," Ferrer said.

No foreign nationals from any country who have recently traveled to China are now allowed entry to the United States.

U.S. citizens and their close family members who travel from China are only allowed to pass through one of 11 airports nationwide, including LAX, where they are screened into one of three groups.

Those with symptoms of respiratory illness or fever -- a very small number, according to Ferrer -- are transported to a medical facility for further screening and testing.

Those who have been in Hubei province, where Wuhan is located, or who have had close contact with someone else with the virus are subject to mandatory quarantine at one of four American military bases, including March Air Reserve Base in Riverside. A group of 195 people held at March were released from a 14-day quarantine Tuesday morning. None had tested positive for the virus.

Officials at the base said two other travelers who passed through LAX and who were brought to the base separately from the original group of 195 remain under quarantine.

U.S. citizens traveling from anywhere else in China who have not had close contact with the virus and show no symptoms are allowed to proceed to their final destination, where they are actively monitored by the local health department and told to stay away from the general public.

Airlines around the world continue to limit flights to China. American Airlines has extended cancellations to mainland China and Hong Kong through at least April 23. Two cruise ships in Asia with more than 5,000 people onboard are stuck at sea. On one, 135 passengers have tested positive for COVID-19 and are being quarantined on board. On the other vessel, no cases of the virus have been confirmed, but the ship has been refused entry to ports in Japan, Taiwan and the Philippines.

The Board of Supervisors has requested a weekly update on the virus.

I remember reading here back early in this thread that all victims of the virus had to be cremated and that was a mandate from TOP CCP officials burial of the dead not a option .

100% accurate... This has EVERYTHING to do with the virus.

Chinese authorities ban burials and funerals in favour of instant cremation
Chinese authorities have ordered the “close by and immediate” cremation of 2019-nCoV fatalities, banning burials and funerals

I had read the pneumonia caused from coronavirus was viral. You would know more that I on this though.

The virus attacks the lining of the lungs and destroys cells. The bacteria can move in after as an opportunistic infection. The virus, itself, can cause Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome.

I'd like to see less chatter between the informative posts
This is an intense subject. Personally, I think the chatter is healthy and creates a community of shared reflection on the information and the emotional concern. It lets off steam and it strengthens us. If a particular poster's chatter bothers you, you can always block them. Also, there is a bookmarks thread in Infectious Diseases that has links to informational posts.

I did the math, yesterday, also...

The sheer numbers precluded me from posting it... I can't wrap my brain around that...

Now, I posted a study yesterday that said the mortality is as high as 15% with an infection rate 0f 83%... Plug those into the calculator!

I did the same and came up with ~40 million. Survivable as a nation but a lot of hard road between here and there.

LAX is one of 11 U.S. airport's accepting travelers from China, and the county is monitoring 1,000 who have been asked to "self-isolate."
Right?!?!??! Like the fellow in Chicago whose video was posted several pages ago - he was self-isolating with his family and then told the story of the car that was parked so close to his on the street that he HAD to go down and see what was going on. What part of isolation did he not understand?

*If* I understood the link correctly, the equivalent new cases under the old way of counting them would have been 1,508 new cases.

Snip below (they just started including clinically diagnosed cases)

>>>From 02:00 to 24:00 on February 12, 2020, Hubei Province newly added 14,840 new cases of pneumonia (including 13332 clinically diagnosed cases) <<<

US dependence on China for drug ingredients ‘hinders coronavirus response’

  • Capitol Hill hearing comes only days after the Trump administration proposes sweeping cuts to public health agencies and scientific research
  • Other vulnerabilities in the supply chain could affect the flow of gloves, masks and materials used in patient isolation, former CDC director says
The United States’ ability to respond to an epidemic within its borders is critically hampered by its reliance on China for pharmaceutical products and insufficient funding for preparedness, former health officials warned on Wednesday.

The assessment came amid the growing spread of the deadly coronavirus that emerged in China’s Hubei province, and just days after US President Donald Trump’s administration proposed significant cuts to the health agencies charged with leading the response to the contagion.

US drug companies rely heavily on China as a supplier of raw materials that go into the production of active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs), said Scott Gottlieb, former head of the Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

“In many cases China is the sole source of that material,” Gottlieb, who led the FDA for two years under Trump, said during a hearing on Capitol Hill.

At a time when China would be focusing its production on domestic demand rather than international export, and amid wide scale disruption to industry across the country caused by the coronavirus outbreak, Gottlieb said the contagion had exposed “a critical choke point in the supply chain for pharmaceuticals”.

Biomedical researchers around the world are scrambling to find an effective treatment and develop a vaccine for the disease, named Covid-19 on Tuesday by the World Health Organisation (WHO).

The contagion has killed more than 1,100 people and infected over 45,000, the vast majority in China.

Beyond pharmaceuticals, vulnerabilities in the supply chain could also affect the flow of health care provisions like gloves, masks and materials used in patient isolation, said Julie Gerberding, former head of the US Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

Luciana Borio, who led medical and biodefence preparedness in Trump’s National Security Council (NSC) until 2019, said the US had failed to protect the supply of essential medicine and medical equipment. “That needs to change going forward,” she said.

The former officials were testifying before the Senate homeland security and governmental affairs committee, the upper chamber’s chief oversight body.

As was the case at a House of Representatives hearing about the coronavirus outbreak last week, administration officials declined to testify before the panel, disappointing committee members of both parties.

Officials were occupied with a closed-door briefing of lawmakers on Wednesday morning, said Senator Ron Johnson, a Republican from Wisconsin and the committee chairman. “But I think it’s extremely important the public understands these things as well,” he added.
