I just had a thought about the prefab hospital that China put up in a week. Aren't they made with prefab panels? They must have already had those panels prefabricated and stored someplace. That's why they look like jail cells - they probably ARE jail cells! Holy crap! That is a scary thought! Why did they have jail cells ready and waiting?

China builds even when it is not needed to keep the work force working.... This may explain the prefab cells being readily available....

This is PURE SPECULATION on my part. Do not take this as the truth or even slightly valid--but this is how I am viewing numbers in China. I will explain my rationale.

To evaluate Chinese statistics we need to compare apples to apples. We can't do that with nCoV because frankly, it is primarilly a Chinese problem thus far. We have to look at historical records for a disease occuring in both places with similar properties (disregarding differences in R0, mortality rates, etc because we DON'T have real statistics). I chose influenza.

First assumption: You are no more likely to get the flu in the US or in China. I know that this is a best case scenario because we have more robust vaccinations, better healthcare, public education, etc. on the matter. But lets assume the risk is the same and the death rates are equivalent.

The US reports 10,000-25,000 flu related deaths (October 1-Jan 25--flu season. Others outside of the range are excluded):

The HIGHEST flu death report for an entire year was in 2018, accounting for 144 cases for the entire year. Assuming that the actual rate of infection, mortality rate are the same, this represents an under-reporting of approximately 70-174 for each actually tabulated case.

Next, we have the population difference. There is approximately 1.4 billion people in China. We will use approximately 350 million people in the US. This represents a correction factor of 4 (there are 4 times as many people, and hence cases/deaths as you would see in the US due to population difference).

At the time of this post there are 361 reported deaths in China. Using our factors, we get:

361 official deaths X 70 low underreported factor X 4 population adjustment =101,080
361 official deaths X 174 high underreported factor X 4 population adjustment = 251,256

For cases we have:

17238 cases X 70 low underreported factor X 4 population adjustment = 4,826,640
17238 cases X 174 high underreported factor X 4 population adjustment = 11,997,648

There are a lot of problems looking at it this way. Are they underreporting at the same factor that they do influenza? This likely won't translate to other countries. Again, this is pure speculation. Treat it as such.

Thanks! That's good stuff, I love stats because they normally tell the truth or something close to the truth, the government control of the media in China is obviously playing a large roll in downplaying the spread, It'll be interesting to see if true numbers ever see the day of light, if I had to guess I'd say no way.

Evidence emerging that the new #coronavirus

seems to mutate rather fast. Authors say “Close monitoring of the virus’s mutation, evolution, and adaptation is needed”. In a family of 6 infected people, 2 ‘nonsynonymous’ mutations occurred during human-to-human transmission.
1f914.png
This gives me reason to think it mutates like the common cold meaning there may never be a viable vaccine for it. We aren’t able to build a immunity to the common cold or have a vaccine, because mutates. The common cold is also a Coronavirus just not lethal. Will this be the same way, but always possibly lethal? Will this one be with us forever like the common cold? Will it become as common as the common cold, only more deadly? Will our kids and grandkids forever be bringing it home from the school and daycare pitri dish?
How many generations before we build at least a resistance of some sort? I am just a oil field hand so my understanding is limited to say the least.
So many disturbing questions.

I've been watching with growing interest the spread of this virus and how, so far, the Islamic world seems to be realatively untouched.

Someone made an observation many pages back that this would explode across the region if it hits because the bodies of the deceased should be cremated, immediately, upon death to destroy the virus and no funerals will be arranged in China.

Of course, cremation is haram ( forbidden ) in Islam and bodies are merely wrapped in blankets and then buried, which will aid in the spread of the virus.

My point of view in watching this unfold is, what if the Islamic world is mostly spared? There is a little known prophecy from the Ahmadiyya Sect ( considered heretics by Sunni and Shia Muslims ) that states:

1580754891024.png
Although it is not within the power of anyone to show a sign,
But I show you a sign from God.

Such a fortunate one shall be delivered from the plague,
Who fears [God] and seeks refuge in the four walls of my home.

I swear by God and by His Majesty,
All my words flow from divine revelation.

So what is there to quarrel with now, this should suffice,
For anyone whose heart has fallen dark due to rejecting me.

If the promise that I have made proves false,
It is only right that everyone stands up to fight against me.

If this passes the Islamic world by, it will be seen as punishment upon the kuffar ( unbeliever's ) sent by Allah. Especially, the hated Chinese who have imprisoned so many Muslims in concentration camps and have worked to ban Islam from China.

This virus COULD be the catalyst to drive Islam to attempt to set up their new caliphate in the region...

Dr. Francis Boyle discusses the coronavirus outbreak in Wuhan, China and the Biosafety Level 4 laboratory (BSL-4) from which he believes the infectious disease escaped. He believes the virus is potentially lethal and an offensive biological warfare weapon or dual-use biowarfare weapons agent genetically modified with gain of function properties, which is why the Chinese government originally tried to cover it up and is now taking drastic measures to contain it. The Wuhan BSL-4 lab is also a specially designated World Health Organization (WHO) research lab and Dr. Boyle contends that the WHO knows full well what is occurring.

Maybe, but why have it under the mask?
They're earbuds. It goes to her left ear. At about breast level you can see the "Y" where they split for right and left, and the other "bud" dropped down.

In the picture you can't really even tell if its under her mask or if the white of mask meet white of cord "merge".

As the coronavirus outbreak hit fuel demand in China, the world’s biggest crude oil importer, refiner Sinopec Corp (0386.HK) told its facilities to cut throughput this month by about 600,000 barrels per day (bpd), or 12%, the steepest cut in more than a decade.

Independent refineries in Shandong province, which collectively import about a fifth of China’s crude, cut output by 30-50% in a little more than a week, executives and analysts said.

This will have a major impact on the oil market really fast. The oil market as as whole is running a surplus and has been for years. Production rates have been jiggled to make it seem like there is a shortfall, but in reality there is not. They are trying to hit higher price points when they jiggle the volumes produced.

If the rest of the market doesn't drop volume ASAP, there will be a crater in oil prices.

Also this shows us that China's economy is really tanking right now. They don't conserve at all. If anything they are wasteful. To cut 12% and have the independents do the same says everyone is freaking out regarding the Chinese economy.

So they declare it to be pandemic and they don't have a percentage death number yet for developed Health Systems.
We are showing low numbers in the US, but the number of countries with cases are climbing.
It was easy to restrict flights to China, how do we shut down all International service?
Our markets seem to be whistling past the graveyard this morning, but the Algos are just waiting for the headline.
I am waiting for the US numbers to increase and whether our President is patting his own back or calling for more camps and restrictions in the State of the Union. This virus needs a foothold in the US which hasn't happened yet.
Its time to start calming down for the long haul at this point. This is a biological event that probably won't happen at Internet speeds.
This thread is getting long in the tooth and we should consider a new thread for each week. Before you post, check the last couple of pages and make sure you aren't repeating what is already here. One of our regulars should be posting a summary on a regular basis. Maybe country, first date, current cases, estimated deaths would be helpful.

The officially recognized infections are low. They are probably lower than the numbers that are held back for fear of scaring us. Those in turn are probably a small fraction of the total infections, most of which are either asymptomatic or are thought to be seasonal flu. It's possible the novel virus has a very strong foothold indeed.

I am not a doctor, nor do I play one on TV. But this strikes me as a heart attack, not neurological. The virus has been stated to cause sudden heart failure. It would be great if we could determine whether the victims of this are still asymptomatic. Not enough data yet.

Can they add Mexico to that list? I know they are fine, but can we be really safe and just ban the country? LOL

I keep going back to Parvo. I realize that the subject is nCov- but a virus is a virus.

There is a difference in Hydrogen Peroxide and Accelerated Hydrogen Peroxide. The Accelerated kills Parvo dead. You don't find this stuff in the pharmacy aisle at Wally World.

The other thing I found in this article (after living this nightmare) is just how long Parvo stays in the soil and is able to wake up in Springtime and create another outbreak. I keep reading nCov lasts around 5 hours on a hard surface. Why should a lab grown virus have less staying power than common old Parvo? I am thinking that nCov will (has been engineered to) hang around, too. All the statements of it dying out relatively fast are Hopium. They wish.

People are bigger than most dogs. Therefore the viral load is much larger.

Burying the dead will just put a huge virus load in the soil to be carried off by groundwater. Wargaming this one is enough to give me nightmares.

This article lists several chemicals that kill Parvo. I would like to know their effectiveness on nCov? When this hits the States, Veterinarians are going to be on the front lines. They will need to know what works and what doesn't before hand. Research now.

How Long Does Parvo Stay in Soil: (Snow, Sun, Shade)
Written by D@SeniorDogDays in Parvo In Dogs,Senior Dog Illness

how long does parvo stay in soil

While parvo is a year round problem for our dogs, spring time is when we begin to see parvo outbreaks. As snow melts and temperatures rise, the once dormant parvovirus particles are waking up to wreak havoc.

So how long does Parvo live in Soil?
The Canine Parvovirus can last in soil several months and even a year or years when conditions are favorable for the virus to survive. Parvo is hearty and can survive snow, ice and extreme heat. Lifespan of parvo on soil varies and 2 factors that contribute to how long parvo can stay in soil are:
  • The Concentration of the Viral Particles
  • Parvo Soil Environment (Sun, Shade, Snow)
The Concentration of the Parvovirus
An infected dog can shed 20-40 million viral particles per ounce of feces. And an infected dog experiencing watery diarrhea is capable of defecating 6-10 ounces, several times a day. This means contaminated soil could contain literally billions of canine parvovirus particles.

And it only takes 1000 viral particles for an unprotected dog be become infected. Like a good army, the canine parvo virus is stronger, harder to defeat and has a higher survival rate when the particles stick together in high concentrations.
If the soil area is recently contaminated with the feces of a highly contaminated dog, the parvo virus in your soil will be harder to kill than if the virus was shed by recovering dog that was toward the end of his bout with parvo.

The Environment Where Parvovirus is Located

Parvo Virus in Snow and Cold Covered Soil – 1 Year or Longer
Believe it or not, freezing temperatures, snow and ice will actually help to protect and preserve the canine parvovirus. In these conditions, parvovirus particles are quite capable of going dormant until warmer weather. This is why so many outbreaks happen in the spring.

Parvo Virus in Shade Covered Soil – 6 Month to a Year or Longer
Shade can also serve to protect the parvo virus from being destroyed. The virus can do well in cool areas that are protected from heavy rains and that’s exactly what shade offers.

Direct Sun Exposed Soil – 4-6 Months, Possibly Longer
Soil contaminated with parvo virus that is in direct sunlight will usually have the shortest lifespan. Still, research shows that the soil should be hosed off regularly and allowed to completely dry and bake in the sun.

How to Clean Parvo Contaminated Soil (4 Ways)

Bleach
Clorox bleach is very effective in the ratio of 1 part bleach and 30 parts water but there is no way to saturate your grass and lawn with chlorine bleach without damage.
You can however; saturate contaminated feces with a 30:1 ratio (water to bleach) before disposal. Studies show that saturating infected feces will either destroy the virus completely or it will reduce the viral particles per ounce of feces.
A few things to remember when using bleach to kill parvo:

Freshness Matters: When using chlorine bleach to kill parvo, the bleach must be freshly purchased. The jug that’s been in your laundry area for months may have significantly reduced killing power.

Concentration Matters: Take care to buy the good bleach which is formulated at 6% sodium hypochlorite and not the diluted versions at 2.0 – 3.0%. Bleach that is capable of killing canine parvo will say so on the label.

Mixture Effectiveness: Research shows that the water/bleach solution loses effectiveness quicker than other methods. Therefore, the 30:1 ratio should be mixed in small quantities as needed.
Now, we’ll talk about bleach alternatives for killing parvo.

Potassium Peroxymonosulfate
Potassium Peroxymonosulfate is an oxidizing agent and it comes in powder form. You prepare the solution with powder and water and pour it into a spray bottle. The spray bottle mixture lasts for 7 days. Unlike bleach it retains its effectiveness when applied to organic material such as earth and grass.
This powder is available online and can be shipped right to your door. Products with Potassium Peroxymonosulfate are available in:
  • Trifectant
  • Virkon
Trifectant and Virkon come in both industrial size (for kennels and vet offices) and they come in smaller household sizes. Here is a picture of what they look like and you can click for current pricing:

Accelerated Hydrogen Peroxide (AHP):
This is not hydrogen peroxide you buy at the corner drugstore in the brown or green bottle. Accelerated hydrogen peroxide can kill germs and viruses that other disinfectant cannot; Canine Parvovirus included. Available products containing AHP are:
  • Accel
  • Rescue
Accel and Rescue are liquid form and can be either ready to use or concentrated for in-home dilution. Again, they come in bulk for industrial use or smaller sizes for dealing with parvo at home. Here is what Accel and Rescue look like and you click the pictures to check their current pricing and read reviews:
Comes in Small Size

Chlorine Dioxide (Sniper)
The final product is called Sniper and it comes highly recommended. What’s great about Sniper is that it can be used on your dog, in your laundry, on your carpets, all around your house AND in soil, rocks, and grass.
It is the most environmentally friendly product that KILLS the canine parvovirus and as luck would have it, it’s affordable. Here is the link to: Sniper Disinfectant (link) on amazon so you can check the availability and price.

Indiana school districts closing for flu

Heard 11 school districts in Tennessee closed for a week due to flu to disinfect, Nashville and Knoxville
East TN has been hit HARD with the flu. Our district was closed Friday and today. Tomorrow my daughter goes back to school and I am worried that it’s just not over yet. They have to have a certain percentage out for them to call school off. Wish they would close for a week!

Along those lines...

Folks on the board might discover some valuable insight from some "At Home" PPE practice: How do you don PPE correctly? How do you handle/decon items (food/mail/meds) that come from outside your quarantine? How do you doff PPE correctly? Where is your hot zone, where is your gray zone? How do you handle access to your green zone? How do you dispose of your used PPE correctly?

I spent a little time familiarizing my boys with all those steps this weekend, and it REALLY drives home the point that you DON'T want to be stepping outside your quarantine unless it's a genuine emergency. Doing EVERYTHING correctly is bleeping hard; one misstep and all of your effort is for naught.

The best course of action really is total isolation.
My son is an RN and works in a large hospital in ICU cardiac care.
He was home this weekend and we discussed the above situation.
His opinion was, hardly anyone knows how to correctly use the items needed for PPE.
It would probably do more harm than good.

A few pages back someone was asking about staying busy. I work 70-80 hours a week including Saturdays but in my "down" time yesterday, I meal prepped, cleaned house, and did laundry. My meal preps were beef broccoli in the Instapot, spaghetti in the Instapot, chicken fettuccine alfredo, a couple baked chicken breasts, and about 2 pounds of taco meat. I keep a few out for this week and freeze the rest. My next "chore" is organizing and cleaning the garage. This will take time.

I do like some idle time to watch something on TV or listen to music. Staying busy helps me not worry so much. I check my preps and fill in the holes if I can. Basically go on about life and give it to God. He knows what I have and what I need.

Just an FYI, I'm not endorsing this. I would think the better the mask, the better the protection; But still, read the study. Surgical masks are CLEARLY NOT "USELESS"

Surgical masks as good as respirators for flu and respiratory virus protection

Date: September 3, 2019

Source: UT Southwestern Medical Center

Summary: The study reported 'no significant difference in the effectiveness' of medical masks vs. N95 respirators for prevention of influenza or other viral respiratory illness.

Researchers may finally have an answer in the long-running controversy over whether the common surgical mask is as effective as more expensive respirator-type masks in protecting health care workers from flu and other respiratory viruses.

A study published today in JAMA compared the ubiquitous surgical (or medical) mask, which costs about a dime, to a less commonly used respirator called an N95, which costs around $1. The study reported "no significant difference in the effectiveness" of medical masks vs. N95 respirators for prevention of influenza or other viral respiratory illness.
"This study showed there is no difference in incidence of viral respiratory transmission among health care workers wearing the two types of protection," said Dr. Trish Perl, Chief of UT Southwestern's Division of Infectious Diseases and Geographic Medicine and the report's senior author. "This finding is important from a public policy standpoint because it informs about what should be recommended and what kind of protective apparel should be kept available for outbreaks."

Medical personnel -- in particular nurses, doctors, and others with direct patient contact -- are at risk when treating patients with contagious diseases such as influenza (flu). A large study conducted in a New York hospital system after the 2009 outbreak of H1N1, or swine flu, found almost 30 percent of health care workers in emergency departments contracted the disease themselves, Dr. Perl said.

During that pandemic, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommended using the tighter-fitting N95 respirators, designed to fit closely over the nose and mouth and filter at least 95 percent of airborne particles, rather than the looser-fitting surgical masks routinely worn by health care workers, Dr. Perl said. But some facilities had trouble replenishing N95s as supplies were used.

In addition, there are concerns health care workers might be less vigilant about wearing the N95 respirators since many perceive them to be less comfortable than medical masks, such as making it harder to breathe and being warmer on the wearer's face.

Earlier clinical studies comparing the masks and respirators yielded mixed results, said Dr. Perl, also a Professor of Internal Medicine who holds the Jay P. Sanford Professorship in Infectious Diseases.

The new study was performed at multiple medical settings in seven cities around the country, including Houston, Denver, Washington, and New York, by researchers at the University of Texas, the CDC, Johns Hopkins University, the University of Colorado, Children's Hospital Colorado, the University of Massachusetts, the University of Florida, and several Department of Veterans Affairs hospitals. Researchers collected data during four flu seasons between 2011 and 2015, examining the incidence of flu and acute respiratory illnesses in the almost 2,400 health care workers who completed the study.
The project was funded by the CDC, the Veterans Health Administration, and the Biomedical Advanced Research and Development Authority (BARDA), which is part of the U.S. Health and Human Services Department and was founded in the years after Sept. 11, 2001, to help secure the nation against biological and other threats.

"It was a huge and important study -- the largest ever done on this issue in North America," Dr. Perl said.
In the end, 207 laboratory-confirmed influenza infections occurred in the N95 groups versus 193 among medical mask wearers, according to the report. In addition, there were 2,734 cases of influenza-like symptoms, laboratory-confirmed respiratory illnesses, and acute or laboratory-detected respiratory infections (where the worker may not have felt ill) in the N95 groups, compared with 3,039 such events among medical mask wearers.

"The takeaway is that this study shows one type of protective equipment is not superior to the other," she said. "Facilities have several options to provide protection to their staff -- which include surgical masks -- and can feel that staff are protected from seasonal influenza. Our study supports that in the outpatient setting there was no difference between the tested protections."

Dr. Perl said she expects more studies to arise from the data collected in this report; she now plans to investigate the dynamics of virus transmission to better understand how respiratory viruses are spread.
I wonder if this is true, or written for such a day when those who work in hospitals only have the surgical masks, to keep them coming to work. If so, it would only matter for a short period of time as workers became sick...proving it did not function as in this article. Only time will tell, and this time it may make it very clear...either way. It appears it will be put to the test.
