I'm seeing very little Coronavirus news this Sunday morning. Odd. As someone else noted much earlier in this thread, no news is news. I understand that Sundays were typically considered to be slow news days, but this is much less relevant today. You have to know that governments around the world - including our own - are engaged in feverish (no pun intended) activity behind this pandemic.

As we try to discipher events, considering the incubation period, we have to try to imagine the situation 14 days from now and gear our preps accordingly.

Are you sure about that?
I am a volunteer at our local EOC. I have heard butkus about the issue. The comms and reporting mechanisms are in place but I am not hearing a thing about pandemic response as of today.
I've been expecting tp hear something from my company, as they have worldwide projects, but nothing. Not even a "calm down it's no big deal" email.

Think that would depend on whether they have the same kind of 'squatty' open latrines as the Chinese do. I've no idea; does anyone here know this?

I've traveled around a lot in that area and can tell you that many in that part of the world.all the way over to the middle East have squat toilets. You will even see that in (mostly eastern) Europe at times.....

In many places in the world the sewage systems don't allow toilet paper so the toilet paper is placed in a bin and emptied every day (or less) or, perhaps, they have water in a cup or a plastic teapot looking thing or if they are a bit fancy a handheld nozzle in which to clean your backside after using that squat toilet.
Another unfortunate thing.
Sometimes there is no water near the toilet

Our .gov is doing a full court press on panic control, and major media outlets are also doing their part.
It is working, the ignorant remain...ignorant.

and what baffles me is they choose to remain...ignorant.

I've been trying to slowly wake up people and using only "verified trusted sources", like CDC, to wake them up and they're telling me I should head to my bunker and STFU.

Ok.

I agree with panic controls BTW, but I also want the truth from them. If they could dance a fine line between informing and preventing herd panic I'm good with that. If you "read between the lines" you'll have enough information, if you choose to look for it and will have extra time to get ready.

Use this time you have, get ready.

FB, Google and Twitter got the memo. The Fake Media got it too. All fine here, keep moving.

Indeed, how very thankful they and some PTB must be that today is Superbowl Sunday. Full distraction for the masses. I would place good money on never hearing the phrase, 'corona' ONCE during the 5 hours of TeeVee from pregame to the handing out of the trophy at the end.

So on a related note... I’m contemplating a list of preps of things that are typically made in China. I have no idea where to begin. Anything related to electronics, like charging cords, solar panels, battery chargers, etc. I imagine are primarily made in China. As are socks, underwear, clothes. What about nails and screws and ammo... are those typically made in the US?

Any ideas on what to start stocking up on for when those Asian import supply lines inevitably dry up?

Nails and screws and such are definitely China made. Extra screw and nut drivers would be nice but beware soft pot metal. What else? I'm thinking garden hoses, PVC pipe and fittings, PVC glue (plumbing repairs), silicon caulk, glue, curtain rods, fabric, yarn, rope and cordage, bungee cords, plastic stacking kitchen bowls with lids, rubber spatulas, measuring cups, styrofoam cups (I use the 20 oz. poke a hole in the bottom with a nail for germinating seeds). Lots of canning lids and rings. Fertilizer, Sevin Dust, and Fire Ant granules. Hornet spray. Mouse and rat traps. Pool shock (homemade bleach). Light bulbs for all lights in the house and cars. Don't forget the one in the fridge. Be nice to have a couple of extra Air Conditioners laying around. Extra kerosene for the heaters. Lamp oil and wicks, candles, tealights. Clothespins, extra detergent, I could go on for hours. Whatever you NEED, that is what I'd stock up on. Every list is different.

Look at your location by season. What do I absolutely need in Summer, Winter? What are the items that are needed to get a job done? What items are needed without which even though you have the rest- the job can't be done? Don't try to do this all at once. Leave open a Word doc on the computer or carry a pen and little notebook in your pocket. When you think of something, write it down. You can clean the list up later.
Ready. Set. Go.

Panic Sex Lady
We were checking packages in a Wal-Mart for country of origin when a non-employee random stranger walked up and loudly asked if we were worried about the new flu. We said no and walked away. She followed us and loudly announced that the only way to get it was from infected body fluids in our mouths.

I had a really rude sexual remark ready to explain how that could happen, but children were present.

I agree with everything you said. Everyone's list will be based on each individual. The window to get this stuff, IMHO, is closing fast. We all might find ourselves in self-quarantine in a couple of weeks, and won't be able to go out looking for items we have on our lists.

Like you I have been trying to talk to people about it and they don't seem to care. I spoke with one of our HR folks at work last week just in a casual way in the break room, he said he was not worried they would have a vaccine before it really gets started here..
I give up ,other than my family I will not bring up the subject in public again the hell with people.

What's the normal death rate in a city of 11 million people adding a couple hundred people spread out over a few weeks would not swamp the funeral services, the true numbers have to be 10 times that which is being reported.

Observations would seem to confirm your argument.

They can suck eggs for an apology for what they have turned lose upon this earth. Follow the trail and it goes back to last summer in Winnipeg Canada when the two Chi-Com spies were smuggling Corona Virus mutants out of a level four bio hazard lab. Nope they and all their greedy commie Bastards that are in control of that country own this. No apology forth coming and they may have a more independent flag in the near future with a lot less people.

That's a great list, thank you for compiling it. I am in a bit of a different situation. But I suspect enough people here are in it that it bears mentioning and thinking about. I own a coop (think condo). So a lot of the house style maintenance that you mention here I used to do, but no longer. It's often 'call the board, and they'll send someone'. So, any of those who have condo's, what do YOU think you should stock up on? Savvy homeowners, also please feel free to chime in. I AM going to get 3 a/c units now, thanks to your mentoineing it. I do have window units, and they are ancient. I inherited a washer and dryer from previous owner. They are so old that they have woodgrain on them! But being old, they work. Should I be replacing them? Or buying some durable used unit that lasts longer than what is currently available?

One other thing that hopeful no one else here is dealing with. I am in a tiny studio apartment 1,000 miles from home, on a project that I lightly furnished in November. The plumbing, miscrowave, fridge, washer and dryer provieded are all recent. I humbly ask the group mind on this one. I'm here, Lord willing, till July. Given this situation, what if anything would you stock up for here? I'm going to get a battery, wipers and some oil filters for my car today, along with some rice and beans. Looking forward to your creative input.

It's probably best that you don't say anything outside of your circle or here on TBK, people get weird in panic situations and they may decide that you're part of the problem so off with your head... it's happened in the past... like I said people get weird in panic situations.

Re: Preps / Don't forget your whole house water filter! Most are made in China "for the USA".

In my case, it's parts to repair the well. I just took a little break to go plant five Chayote squash that "volunteered" to grow. As I was watering the Rabbit hay mulch I put on them, I was thinking, "Would be real easy for somebody to steal that hose."

War game worst case scenarios so that you may keep the things you have. Time (past time) to harden it up.

Same here. I think on the first couple pages I had posted about someone from my Chicago office that had a business trip planned to China. I was talking to her about the flu. Next thing you know my boss is like stop it you're scaring her. I say nothing for over a week and then guess what- she texted me to say they had cancelled her trip (this was before flights were cancelled).

I have a small stash of masks and gloves. I had more and didn't know DD was using them for her crafts! I'm not overly concerned because I do have my stash but thought I'll pickup a few more. Nope- went to Walmart, 2 dollar stores, 3 Walgreens, Smith's, and CVS. not a mask to be found.

I'm like you I just shut up and keep track of my preps. Which are now locked up. DD said she was sorry but I explained to her ASK before using anything.

I gave up trying to warn people about anything a few years ago. I only talk here and with family now days. I figure it this way...If people want to know, they can look for info themselves. If not, let them suffer the consequences.

I'm all about the doom
Knowing China, we won't know even then. We'll only have estimates and sketchy figures to go by. Other countries maybe more open but kinda doubt that. The WHO will make some announcement and show it was wasn't as bad as it probably was.
Countrymouse, we won't know until it's over, but the latest Chinese report finds a 6% mortality rate.

It seems to me that at some point the Chinese Lesser Classes start rioting. Should that happen we will then know that things are real bad.

I've been saying this since day one when the news broke out.

PW, you were referring to colleges and universities as potential loci of coronavirus. You were spot on; that's precisely what happened in my town--Tempe, home of Arizona State University, and U.S. nC0V Case #5.

I read somewhere (here?) that when our economy tanked in 2008, a lot of middle-class Americans became financially unable to send their kids to college. Schools therefore ramped up their recruiting abroad, especially in countries where economic growth was robust (e.g., China and India). This was nothing new; the last time I took a class at ASU (more than 25 years ago), I had a Chinese math TA who couldn't communicate well enough to discuss my grade, let alone explain quadratic equations.

My posture is: Watch. Wait. Follow the science to the extent possible, given the paucity of accurate data. And follow the money. China injecting $174B of liquidity into its markets doesn't cheer me. The plunge in the Baltic Dry Index this past month doesn't either.

So no selling at a lower price. Only price increases are sanctioned.
Short selling is not the same thing as selling at lower price, it’s borrowing shares to replace at a hopefully lower price.
This does limit some betting on a market drop it and similar options can be used to protect against market drop without selling shares you want to hold for long time.

They must be expecting a rather large drop.

Look, it's bad here for me. Power has been out for ten hours.
I live in a tin can down by the river.

Barely making it.
Living on the absolute minimum.

Just what do you suggest?

I'm not going to just give up.

A few words of encouragement will go a long ways,
