McCain: Obama Might Be a Socialist
July 18, 2008, 3:02 pm
Laura Meckler and Susan Davis report on the presidential race.
Wall Street Journal
Sen. John McCain said rival Sen. Barack Obama may be a socialist.
In a town hall meeting Thursday in Kansas City, the presumptive Republican presidential nominee said that his Democratic opponent had the “most extreme” record in the Senate.
Later, McCain was asked by the Kansas City Star if he thought Obama was an extremist. He replied: “His voting record … is more to the left than the announced socialist in the U.S. Senate, Bernie Sanders of Vermont.” Sanders describes himself as a “democratic socialist” but he ran, and won, as an independent candidate in the 2006 Vermont Senate race with a 33-point margin of victory. He served in the U.S. House for 14 years prior to that.
The Star then asked McCain if he thought Obama was a socialist. “I don’t know,” he replied. “All I know is his voting record, and that’s what people usually judge their elected representatives by.”
The Obama campaign did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
Update: In an emailed statement, Obama spokesman Tommy Vietor said, “This attack is straight out of the Bush-Rove playbook, and is exactly what the American people are tired of. Instead of making false, divisive attacks, Senator Obama is working to bring our country together to meet the challenges we face as a nation.”
