Crossed off two more annoying chores: got all of the cut-up branches loaded into the back of my car and took them to the composting drop-off, and then I managed to get the burned-out microwave loaded and dropped that off at the special appliance drop-off, a once per year deal.

And, no, I have one burned out microwave that I use for storage of radios. I don't need another one.

I need to do more upper body strengthening. That's where kayaking helps, but it's still too cold to be on the water without a wet suit, in my opinion.

In any case, I'm very happy to have those tasks finished!

Also, talked with two more tree guys today. One is a local, family-owned company with both equipment and experience. Their insurance is in good standing. The other one doesn't seem to have current insurance, and there are a number of complaints about them not finishing projects.

I don't rely on reviews because they can be faked or someone may have a beef with an employee that's not job-related, but several dozen bad ones, going back a year or two is not a great sign.

Both companies I'm considering are "veteran / family" owned, insurance current. Their quotes were $50 apart, too, and within the ball park of the 2024 "going rate." Next step is to contact several past customers, but I think I'm on the right track, now. If this were just a tiny maple, I'd get "anyone," but since this is a big, dangerous tree, I'm being as careful as I can.

I hate to have a chore that is just laying around. Every day that I look at it, it stresses me even more. Especially the ones that I hate to do! It is such peace of mind to me to just get it done! But sometimes it just can't be helped! We finished building the turkey pen today. The turkeys are out from under the lights and ready to try their wings! In the process of all that building I managed to stumble over some supplies that were on the ground and did a full face plant. Hurt my pride more than anything else!
Herbs are looking great and everything else that we have put in the ground seems to be transitioning without difficulty. Excited about the growing year. I am growing loofahs just for fun! Boy have they taken off!
Scheduled the stray cat's "fix me so I can't have any more kittens" surgery for next week. Have to wait for a few more months to take care of her babies.
Our corner of the world is becoming more and more concerned over the political atmosphere. Plans are becoming more refined...and I thought we were pretty refined and organized already. Shared crops are all in the fields and milk cows chores are now split between several families. That whole bird flu thing and the tightening of shipping animals across state lines due to bird flu have stepped up plans. We pray continually for wisdom for us and all of you.

The whole bird flu thing and the increased protests on college campuses has me on edge. It's like they are working two visible fronts, while in the background, the US dollar is quietly getting ready to implode.

War or not, my ash tree is coming down within the next week or two. The last thing I need is it falling on someone passing by and causing injury.

Memur, glad to see your cautious approach to hiring a contractor. Too many people do not go to the time and effort to do their homework. Better to do it right than to get ripped off.

Boy it's been a busy weekend and week. The best part was our granddaughter came to spend a week with her dad. Our son and the mother had a horrible custody battle 10 years ago. The mother took the kids to another state and made all kinds of accusations against our son. None true. We could prove some was bull but others were just his word against theirs. Long story short, we haven't seen her in 10 years. But she is 18 now and has nothing to do with her mother or most of her family in the other state. She hasn't lived with her mom in well over a year, but her dad is still having to pay child support to his ex wife. The step father went to prison for selitition of a minor, our granddaughter. Her mother thinks she was lying still even though the proof was on her phone. The stepdads FB page had plenty on it that anyone reading it had no doubt he was a pervert. I could go on and on about the sad life that girl has had. And child services in the other state are just as much to blame for keeping the kids in that situation.

We spent a lot of time visiting granddaughter, her boyfriend of 2 years, and our 5 month old great grandson. They both have jobs. The little guy is cute, happy, and well cared for. Granddaughter contacted us when her stepfather went to jail and we have had contact ever since. This is the first time we have seen her in person. He dad had seen her just for a short visit when some friends took her to an event closer to us about 3 years ago. I hope the kids can stay together. They are so young.

I planted corn for my corn meal. I also planted part of my peppers. The ones I started need to grow a little more. We are supposed to get a lot of rain this week so i may not get much done in the garden.

We got out 22 year old truck repaired. It should be in good shape for awhile now. We dropped the other one off to be worked on when we picked up the first. Both being in great shape is one less worry.

Hubby is awake, i will post a little more later.

Cary never did get the tiller to crank. He's going to try again working on it, but if it still doesn't work, it will have to go in the shop. That will delay our gardens getting put out. It's always something every year that hinders us. That's one of the reasons Cary doesn't like to fool with gardens anymore. It does get frustrating. If not the weather, it's the machinery. Starting Monday, it's supposed to rain all week. We'll do what we can even if late.

As for the political atmosphere and world situations, Cary has given me pretty much free reign to keep stocking not only food but other supplies as well. We have everything we believe we need physically, but there is always room to improve. We're concerned, too, and we were discussing it this morning over coffee. We don't believe that the world or the US is going to be getting better, but much worse. So, instead of worrying about how much money we have, we're to the point that we want to use it to better our situation, instead of having it in a bank where it can be lost, devalued, or have money, but nothing to buy. We can only do so much, though. We don't live on a farm to be able to grow or raise everything we eat or need. We can't even keep the little tiller running when we need it to.

Gonna be in the low 80's today and it looks like the sun is trying to shine. I feel better today than I did yesterday.

I'd been looking and looking for a flat of 24 cans of the Genova tuna that I like that I knew I had. I had it in the pantry closet, but when DH reorganized that and the pantry room he moved it. I had kinda forgotten about it, but have been eating a can every day or so (it's delish in olive oil) with nothing but the tuna. I finally found it the other day, I looked up and there it was on a very top shelf. I managed to get a can out of the flat, the best buy date was 2019. It was fine. I had been getting an 8 can pak once a month in subscribe and save, but the 24 can case showed up in a search and its cheaper per can that way, of course more expensive to buy 24 over buying 8 cans. But its a few dollars off in subscribe and save, so I'm going back to buying it that way.

I've been using one of my new skillets and I love it, basically just wipe it out, nothing sticks. The older one was probably like that in the beginning and I let it get away from me. I also pretty much like the new silicone spatulas, although certainly not as much as my old metal ones, but I need to keep the new skillets in good shape so I can't use them.

When I bake something in the oven I use stainless steel.

Does anyone use a liquid starter when making sourdough bread? That's the kind that my recipe calls for.

Starter recipe

3/4 C sugar
1 pk yeast
3 Tlbs. potato flakes
1 C warm water

Mix in jar and set on counter to ferment for 2-3 days before use.

The reason I ask is because it's been a long time, since I've made sourdough bread, and I know that I have to keep the starter going by feeding it every few days. That's the problem. I don't remember how/what to feed it. My recipe doesn't say. I think you just add more sugar, potato flakes, and water as in the recipe, but I'm not sure.

I've decided to start back making our own bread. The loaves from the grocery store are costing me $5+ each. Jewish seeded rye is what I buy. Sourdough bread is a great substitute for that. We love both. Just don't want to pay that kind of money for one loaf of bread. That's $20+ a month for 4 loaves which is what we go through. I can make it much cheaper.

Hope someone knows what to feed the bread starter. I would like to get some going again.

It is raining hard and cold. Grand is visiting a friend so we are alone. It has been years since I could just sit and enjoy a rainy day. I am going to thoroughly enjoy this one. The world can just stop until tomorrow morning. All the work will still be there. Ain't no work fairies in our neck of the woods.

My friend Morgan and her 7 babies came by for a visit. The 2 1/2 year old boy finally let me hug him and I stole a couple of kisses when I could. I had finally gotten enough yoyos for all of them. And of course I had commodity food to share with them. DH give the 11 y/o boy a dremil and several other tool type things. They stayed for about an hour. The have a large several passenger van and I don't think they had much room for anything else.

I had several things from years past on the camper porch that they wanted (thank goodness) and now I can see some daylight out on that porch which gives me space to work on what is in the camper to try and save things. Things to go through and get rid of. Once I get some more done in the camper than I'll take the little darlings out to my school bus, God only knows what actually out there, it was my storage shed for several years.

I was pretty tired when they left so I fixed a pizza for lunch, hamburger and french fries for supper, regular potato fries for Dh and sweet potato fries for me, I cook the fries in the oven.

Well, Bless his heart! I noticed that Cary was quiet outside for a long while. I went on the hunt of him, and low and behold, he was turning our raised beds over with his shovel. Hard work doing it that way, but he was determined to get our gardens going, before it rained. I put all of our pepper plants and starter plants out, and we'll do the tomatoes tomorrow. He did 3 raised beds with the shovel. The other 3 will wait for the tiller to be fixed, hopefully, Tuesday. Those will only have flowers, so not too important right now other than I wanted my squash to be planted in with all the flowers. I put all the peppers out in one raised bed, instead of the planter pots. Now, I don't know what to use them for, except more flowers. Has anyone tried growing cukes in planter pots? Squash? LOL.

Baked chicken breast tonight with lima beans, steamed and buttered potatoes, bread and butter pickles, and garlic rolls. Butter pecan cake for dessert.

Went for my walk. I'm tired.

SB this is what I feed my sour dough. 50 grams of unbleached all purpose flour and 50 grams of water. I actually use rye flour because it has more sugar in it and gets the starter going faster. You can also use whole wheat or a mix of all of it. I have good results and agree that good bread prices are thru the roof. I have been making bread for forever. When I get tired of the starter, I just tuck it in the fridge or freezer until I want sour dough again.
Hoping your garden goes gang busters!

I'm lying in a hospital bed right now. Foot that was swollen so badly has developed an open sore that has been draining for almost two weeks. It has not responded to oral antibiotics, so am in hospital on IV antibiotics. Will likely have to have surgery on it. Will know more after they do an MRI. Prayers requested.

At least youngest son is here to help out with some much needed yard work, so my wife is not by herself at home.
I'm praying for you!

My starter never looks anything like that. It's a thick liquid and smells like beer when it's ready to use. I've never used any other kind. I don't know if my sourdough recipe will work with another starter, since the bread recipe and starter came together.

Grocery shopping today - over $200, but mostly stuff on sale. I found shredded cheese with an exp. date in late may for 99c/8 oz, so I stocked up. Pork and beans 78c/15 oz can, 24 oz loaf of sandwich bread $1.48 at the local independents. Then I hit Safeway. Decent lunch meat is $15/lb, but DH doesn't ask for much, so I got some at his request. I needed to buy some CoQ10, that was pricy. Everything else was on sale and I bought the limit. I can see where this whole 'cows with bird flu' could affect dairy prices and that is a major part of my diet.

When we head into the big city on Monday, I think I'll talk DH into going to the discount grocery.

I was about to head to the shower when I got a severe thunderstorm warning. I stepped outside to check the weather and it absolutely screams tornado. Took the items to the basement that I always take in preparation and will stay upstairs and keep watch. It has been raining off and on all day. It has been quite windy for the last few days (not unusual) but right now it is very still. This is the creepy weather that makes the hair on my body stand up.

Other than chasing down my garbage can this a.m. I've been a couch potato all day. I've not felt good the last few days so am just taking it easy. I'm blaming allergies/asthma and the wind blowing irritants around.

Well we had the hamburgers and fries, sans any bread. It was tasty.

I watched the end of Shawshank Redemption, always chokes me up. I do wish I could find a book to hold my attention. I am find it easier to read on my kindle app on my phone rather than a real book. I'm still reading only with readers, but I may need a little correction. I have an appointment in the eye clinic in June. I truly dislike their frame selection with this new company.

I used the larger of my two new skillets to cook the hamburger patties in and they came out great with no mess to speak of.

This makes me so happy. It's always bothered me that he was treated so unfairly and just last week I asked DS if he had heard from any of them. He and DIL will be glad to hear the first one has been in touch.

FWIW, I can vouch for the fact that Digger's son is a good man and should have never been separated from his babies. He was a good father to them and their main caregiver for years. He was our neighbor during much of that time.

Bless his heart, I hope the others come back too but it will never be fair that all those years were stolen from him. I'll refrain from saying what I want to about that mother for separating them from their father and for letting that man mistreat them. Sometimes life is just not fair.

Nomifyle,
You can just get a script and oder online if you can't find frames that you like. Hubs does it all the time and price is reasonable. Just a thought!

I freeze shredded cheese. It can get clumpy and a little slimy if left too long (it's still edible) just may not be to your tastes. A month or two, it's fine, longer it seems to lose it's consistency.

I just discovered the Rockton series by Kelley Armstrong, I don't know if you would like them or not. Rockton is a town in the Canadian wilderness where people disappear to when they need to hide. I find them compelling and hard to put down.

Just a quick note: if you're following the tornadoes in Iowa at all, I'm fine! I live north of the Des Moines metro area, and the tornadoes are touching down well south of me.

There's going to be a lot of damage, but early reports have said no fatalities, so I hope that trend keeps up. Most places did receive at least 20 minute warnings, which helps reduce deaths.

Thank you Wildwood. We have heard from all the kids. The oldest boy has a baby about to turn 1. The mother lost custody of him when he was 15. He was in a youth home awhile, but he was probably better off there. The 2 youngest kids are still with their mother. There are drugs and mental illness involved. The grandmother has been diagnosed as schizophrenic. I suspect the kids mother is too. She has to have something not right to treat her kids the way they were treated.

Hubby had his Urology check up in Ft Smith. They only see one stone in his kidney, but it is 1.2 cm. It hasn't moved or grown since he has been going to this clinic. He is opting to wait and check it again in Oct.

He is still seeing good results with his weekly blood sugar shot. He has lost 18 pounds so far and his fasting blood sugar is continuing to drop.

While in Ft Smith we went to the Aldi store. We bought a few things. I bought several of their chocolate bars to try. I kept seeing on the internet that they are very good. The one I opened is miles better than anything I have had from American companies. Hubby thinks the quarter to get a cart is weird, but works.

We are getting lots of rain. It really poured last night. Later I will have to put some hay in the chicken run to get them out of the wet. Their house is dry, but the run gets wet with lots of blowing rain and run off when it comes this fast. We have several days of rain still to come. I can work in my flower beds though between rains. And I want to divide my Boston fern. I have not ever tried that. I want to make 3-4 pieces. It is getting root bound. I repotted it last year but it needs more room again.

Stay safe everyone, may God bless all my TB friends.

OMG! Those tornadoes! Meemur, I'm so glad that you're ok. What about Anna43? Packy? Has anyone heard from them? Cary and I were watching everything unfold on FOX Weather and praying so hard for you all.

We've been outside since 7 am doing yard work. Garden is ready for the tomatoes to be planted, but that comes this afternoon. We've been cleaning up around the woodshed. Sorting out kindling pieces and taking the larger chips to the burn pile in 5 gal buckets. The kindling pieces are in 5 gal buckets to go in the mini barn for storage.

It's going to be 86 for our high today with sunny skies.

Supper tonight will be a simple pantry skillet meal.

Packy lives north of me and is likely fine (sleeping!). I don't remember exactly where Anna lives, but I don't think she was in the path.

I don't know this for a fact, yet, but I don't think that there were any fatalities in Iowa, just several injuries that required hospital visits. I had to get going early and am just now catching up with the news.

My area has some limbs down and a little flooding in the low areas but nothing major. The bulk of the damage in the metro, south of me, seems to be around Pleasant Hill. The worst damage was to the west.

More storms are in the forecast for tonight. Last I heard, it was mainly supposed to be rain, maybe some hail.

Onward! Trying to finish errands while it's dry.

Its overcast right now, but looks like the sun is trying to come out, gonna be in the mid 80's today.

Last night the temps in the house was 84 and I was miserable and could not stop coughing. I broke down and turned the ac on for a couple of hours to cool it down. It was 79 when I turned my light off and I was good with that. The cooler temps calmed my cough down. my cough had gone away but we had that cool snap it came back. so I guess that will be one good thing with the warmer weather to not have the bad cough.

No idea what I will do today or what we will have for supper. One thing I need to do is brown some more ground meat, I only have one container of it in the freezer.

So far the transition to glass storage containers is going well.

My lunch today, cut okra sauteed in olive oil, with shreded carrots, dehydrated onion, garlic and green onion. To that I added my frequently consumed tuna and let it simmer. I did add coconut aminos. It was quite filling and tasty. I've been eating a lot of Genova tuna in olive oil lately, even right out of the can it delicious.

We've got our gardens planted as much as we can do without the tiller. We have 4 seedling tomato plants that I'll put in the large planters, maybe tomorrow. The other 3 raised beds are too large for Cary to do with a shovel. 4x20 footers. Lots of room in those for yellow squash and flowers, plus anything else I decide to grow with the flowers.

While Cary was taking his after lunch nap, I changed out his closets for summer. That's a job in and of itself. I did mine a few weeks ago.

Resting my back right now, before starting on supper. We eat early.

I do the same about once a month, too. I cook the whole 1 pound pack and freeze in a jip lock freezer bag. It's there when I need it. All I do is put it on a plate in the microwave to thaw and heat just a bit.
I get bacon by the case from renter that works at Tyson, Wrights brand that is same as HEB sells. Its the restuarant packaging, We cook in oven 2 or 3 pounds at a time. I was the bacon cooker for 5 years of summer bandcamp.Cook and store in freezer until I need it.

Well, that's good for you, but would not be for me. I don't buy or eat anything Tyson or who ever they own, including Wright's bacon. And that's the only brand of bacon ends and pieces my walmart carries. And sad to say one of my favorite chicken apple sausages if from one of the companies they own, so no more of that either. That's just me, a personal choice.

Agree, You can't boycott everything. My renters has been treated well by them in our AO. I don't know how it works from state to state but the one here set up rent and utility assistance programs for the workers during covid. Being in Texas we have always been flood with mexicans working there. The company store avaiable to employees and growers really saves the families money.
