ECON Walmart store closing

Today we heard that one of our three Walmart's within 15 miles announced that they would be closing. I thought this would be a waste of time but the wife wanted to see if she could pick up some craft items that she only buys from Walmart. Once we got near the store, the traffic started backing up and when we finally pulled in the parking lot, there was no parking spaces available. A line of people with carts stretched around the building as they were limiting the number of people in the store. This somewhat surprised me as they were only discounting 25% off but we just went through 99cent store closing down and they stripped it to the bones in a matter of hours for only 10 to 30% off. Why people are going in a shark feeding frenzy at a store full of madhouse people, for this small of a discount seems odd to me but since I retired, I'm not sensitive to other peoples economic situation and spending drivers. Anyone want to suggest what people would put up with this pain in the ass for a minor gain?

Minor gain beats no gain. And gain these days is tougher to come by than normal.

there was a wal mart in west windsor NJ. which is next to princeton nj. there was a sams club in same center. sams closed years and years ago. wal mart closed over past couple of years. it was super busy. I assume it closed..soley because..trenton nj is on the "other side" of west windsor...which you can check the demographics on. there is not a wal mart nearby...and it was on super busy route one..with a ton of rooftops and household income. I assume the 15 minute drive to trenton nj - which cannot have nice things - was the downfall...

What KKC said. Per my recent experience that would be a $200 savings. I'd wait in line for that. Heck, I would bite the bullet and stock an extra set ahead if I didn't need them now. They are already up 25% from the last time I bought the same size and brand tires a year ago.

Our local W-M had industrial shelving outside with FREE signs on it. We just happened to be driving the PU this time. I had been hauling things al day and have cans and bottles in the back I had to turn in to make room for the shelves. We were gone barely 20 minutes at 2 sets were gone when we returned.

We snagged 2 complete sets of pallet-size industrial shelving - 3 levels including ground - for the cost of sweat labor. If we have a successful garage sale this week-end we are going to have some new super duty shelves that will save some serious floor space.

BTW, these seemed to be from the garden center. Guessing they didn't want to store them until next year. No danger of the store closing yet.

Fear, pure and simple. As things get worse, fear will eventually be compounded with violence.
Things WILL get worse, so get used to it.
Pack heavy, walk light, head on a swivel, and situational awareness must become your life- if you and yours want to live…

Yep!

Reminds me of growing up in Florida…hurricane season, people would rush, last minute, to a store to get things they should have had multiples of on hand anyway…but I guess people feel better buying ‘something…anything’ when they're afraid.

Last year, we had a grocery store in town that built a new store a mile from the old one.
Instead of moving things from the old store, they simply stocked the new store with all new merchandise and everything in the old store was discounted 50%.

They didn't announce it and I didn't find out about it until the second day, but even then, I was able to score a cart full of canned goods. All meats and fresh fruits/vegetables were gone first.

They were double staffed, so you could get in and out quickly even though it was very busy.
What blew my mind were all the comments on the local FB page from people talking about how poor or bad off everyone must be to fight those crowds "just for half price groceries."

You don't have to be poor to appreciate something like that, and there was no "fighting crowds". I was able to check out quicker than a normal shopping trip.

Of course in the case of the OP, if it was 25% off at walmart, I wouldn't go near it. That place is a madhouse on a regular day.

Our average wm shopping trip is around $600, especially in the winter when we don't go that often. Keep in mind they are the only store, for many items, in this town. I'd brave the crowd to save $150 but I'm not sure DH would. If it were flu season, I probably wouldn't either.

What's a pain in the ass to you, is other people's enjoyment.

It is a variation of "prisoner's dilemma".

Game Theory.

You know you're gonna get a better deal if EVERYONE waits.

You know your neighbors are gonna beat you to the best stuff.

So human greed and distrust wins the day.

78% of households live paycheck to paycheck, that's why.

Things are much worse than the MSM portrays. We are in a developing depression that is likely to get much worse.
Large numbers of people are getting desperate.

I think it’s interesting that many people don’t realize what’s come upon us…think about it, art imitates life…so they say, so…doesn’t life seem like we’re at the beginning of a cataclysmic move?

When we start seeing people on the fringes, randomly eating other humans, could we say, that maybe we’re in the beginnings of a real life ‘zombie apocalypse?’

Sure, not exactly like the movies, but we see a crumbling of society and essential services…

The formerly civilized public coming unglued - slow motion financial collapse, public education is a farce, the culture is a vacuous tragedy (Kardashians?), the young and others don’t even know what sex they are, everything is upside down…

So, at what point do we acknowledge that we’re at the event horizon of this nation and the west…or perhaps the entire world?

How many old tales tell of grand cultures decaying and being overthrown suddenly and disappearing in the dustbin of history…eventually, becoming just a myth…Atlantis? Gobeki Tepli? The ante diluvian world?

IDK, but it’s begun…but just how far are we down the path to extinction and a reset?
