CHAT Top Off: final preps

Just a quick mental exercise. Say you are given $200 to top off your final preps (grocery, not big stuff). What would you purchase to top off your supplies? Rice and beans? Comfort food? Freezables? Vitamins? Candy?

I think my purchase would be to go to an LDS warehouse and purchase 6 or 7 cases of their long term food storage product. The prices are better if you pick up in person rather than ordering over the internet.

If there is any left over I think I would put the rest into chocolate.

What would you all purchase?

My first thought is coffee & chocolate. Specifically gift quality chocolate.

Both have long term storage issues, and thus a calculation needs to be done for how much will be consumed in a period of normal times and rotated; so that there is plenty but it is not wasted.

And these things are more for my sanity by making life easier on those around me in the hardest of times with small comforts of normalcy. Also as highly prized gifts and barter items in the medium term.

If you already have a lot of staples such as beans and rice, I would consider buying spices.

Eating the same thing two to three times a day for a long period of time will get old.

With some garlic powder, pepper, salt, cayenne pepper, and many more you can greatly increase your eating enjoyment.

Maybe a container of candy like peppermints that you only distribute on special occasions as a treat.

If you already have all of your long term storage basics taken care of I would stick with perishables. Then you can use the perishables up first or slowly mixed in you long term storage foods so that any dietary changes aren't gastro-destructive.

Alternatively, you might want to consider any OTC and/or other meds One of those I would include would be fiber and/or stool softener and/or diarrhea meds. People really don't consider the detriment of having to suddenly change their diet, even when it is changing to something healthier. Your guts do not always appreciate those kinds of life events

If you have all of the above locked down I would focus on liquid beverages. Water, shelf stable milk (box or canned), juices, adult beverages.

That's basically what we did this weekend. Our son got married in SLC on Friday, and since we live in the boonies, we spent Saturday doing the shopping we can't do at home for our little luxuries in life. A couple of cases of Trader Joe's spiced apple cider, their shelf-stable whipping cream, and their aluminum-free baking powder. And, of course, a couple of packages of their mandarin chicken. Sam's Club involved Christmas gifts like nice shampoo and conditioner for the girls (they have very long hair) and a lot of batteries. I think DH sneaked in some gum and snacks as well. Winco had canning lids(!!!), a bit of a surprise, and we decided to get a case of whole olives for holidays and sliced olives for pizzas. Both of those items are much cheaper at Winco, and they aren't something that we will ever be able to grow and preserve on our own. Maybe we should have gotten more.

Oh, and the couple in front of me in the checkout line had about 200 lbs of flour in their carts. I can't remember what else they were getting.

MARANTHA!! Even so, come LORD JESUS!!!
Vitamins & APPLE CIDER VINEGAR
Animal feed>>>>corn, oats
Wheat berries to grow wheat for animals>>>and maybe use for flour, though I have that already taken care of
Chicks
DOG FOOD>>>>>in addition to the rabbits that will be human food and dog food!
TIRES for truck

APPLE CIDER VINEGAR will KILL strep and staph infections in the throat if you gargle with it FULL STRENGTH!!>>>>>>I KNOW this for CERTAIN>>>>Have done it numerous times!! Work in medical clinic>>>>when EVERYONE was getting strep from our pediatric patients, I DIDN'T get it>>>>BECAUSE I gargled daily with FS APPLE CIDER VINEGAR.

Just be careful>>>it can definitely gag you>>>use about a tablespoon til you get to where you can deal with it!!

I have been dehydrating frozen vegetables and storing in jars with 02 absorbers. Any end of season fresh fruits and vegs will provide finer and variety and take up little space. $5 will 2 quarts of frozen to dried vegs.

Am making pea and ham soup with these vegs right now. Going to the Cannery soon too but mainly got the potatoes snd milk…. Buy pouches rather than cans in my experience.

Next up is dehydrated cheese powder and dried eggs

First anything else the van might need in the future.
If theres any buckage left it would go to another big bag of powdered milk and more rice.
I can mix rice with squirrel and rabbits for dog food.
Dry and canned dog food is hit and miss in my area.
A large can of Pedigree just jumped to $1.95 at $General. Ridiculous!
Wal-Mart was still $1.64.
If I didn’t have doggies to provide for I’d buy more food and splurge on a couple bags of M&M’s.

Been topping ours off with grass fed bone broth powder. We eat carnivore so it fits our diet plan. Makes a great high protein base for stews and soups plus the health benefits. The kind I buy has 21g of protein per scoop. There’s 41 servings, one scoop, in a 2lb container.
If times get hard enough and we have to resort to rice for a fill in the bone broth powder will go great in it.

DEPLORABLE ME
I just topped off last week.
Ordered 2 gallons of Molasses for all the beans, especially summthyme's scrumptious bbq baked beans recipe!
2 gallons BaconUp which is now in freezer for longest life.
Some silicon food storage bags to replace throw away ziplocks.
Everything needed to add a 20x24 high tunnel to the garden.
And a few other odds and ends.

Salt. That's a hole in my preps I could drive a truck thru. More flour, vinegar and coffee. Chocolate is a go to item. Fuel if I can figure out how and where to store it.

OTC med: pain relief, anti diarrhea, anti constipation, cold relief.

Vinegar has a lot of uses: medical has already been mentioned on the thread, cleaning, pickling and for other food related uses.

Probably 4 bags of dog food.
But $200 wouldn't quite cover it.

Don't really need much else, and I know I'll use the dog food.

There is no such thing as too much coffee. So that, and chlorine tabs for the pool, which I have started referring to as "the cistern." Maybe some of the freeze-dried or dehydrated veggies that work well in soup--onions, celery, peppers, corn, peas, green beans.

Just made an order for Robitussin DM, Lower sodium Spam for DH, Anti diarhea meds, and some sanitary products. I shoulld be good for the winter. Got crystalized ginger for nausea so that's covered. Got a couple gallons of chocolate chips. They keep well and just a handful with walnuts or pecans makes a really nice treat. Our pecan trees are producing well this year so I plan to dry them well and jar with O2 absorbers for longer term storage. Winter project. They are just now beginning to fall and DH goes out daily and picks them up. Between the 2 trees, we should have plenty to share with the crows and squirrels.

Have to be food related? Then probably pantry moth killin' supplies, coz ya got nothin' if they come to visit : (

I dunno, really. Oooh. Maybe a couple of breeding pairs... if I really thought the end was nigh what I would want is a nice lil momma cow and a few tubes of "daddy" for the freezer. I love cheeseburgers. Since 200 wouldn't touch that though, I guess seeds and some more green house accouterments.
