I don't know if you guys have ever grown edamame (green vegetable soybeans) but this is my second year doing it so I figured I'd give a report about them.
They're pretty popular in Japan - are eaten after being blanched and salted as bar snacks. I can vouch that they are good with beer .
Anway, I grew 2 kinds this year, Butterbean and Lanco. I picked up the Lanco seeds in the Amish area of Pennsylvania when we were down there in May.
So far the Lancos haven't done much, while the Butterbeans are finished already. The Lancos have just barely started making pods. I don't remember how long they were supposed to take - I still have the package so can look it up - but I didn't think it was supposed to be this long. Next year I'll just stick with the Butterbeans.
The Butterbeans and Lancos grow about the same height, but the Butterbeans fall over which is annoying.
The pods have hair on them which comes off when you cook them. They're a little weirdly furry when they're raw.
They seem to set 1 big batch of pods and that's it. What I do is when the pods are pretty well filled out but not yet starting to dry is cut the whole plant down then pick the pods off it.
To cook, boil water then dump the washed pods in and cook for 3 or 4 minutes, then drain and rinse well with cold water. Then when cool salt them, and eat them by putting the pod in your mouth and squeezing the beans out with your teeth.
The Butterbeans are very tender and sweet, I can't vouch for the Lancos as they're still very small (yet very hairy) pods.
