ROCKFORD, Ill. (AP) — Four people were killed and five were wounded in stabbings in northern Illinois on Wednesday, authorities said.
A suspect is in police custody and was being questioned Wednesday afternoon, according to Rockford Police Chief Carla Redd. She said one of the people who was wounded remained in critical condition.

Rockford’s population is about 150,000 and it’s 90 miles (144.84 kilometers) miles northwest of Chicago.
“My heart goes out to the families right now that are suffering a loss,” Redd told reporters.

She said the Rockford Police received a medical call at 1:14 p.m. followed by additional calls for police and paramedics. She said in the city, “we have four individual who are deceased. We have one that’s in critical condition right now and an additional four that are in stable condition.”

“We have a suspect in custody who is being interviewed at this time. We don’t believe there’s any other suspects that are on the run or at large at this particular time.”

The attacks, which took place at multiple locations, have left four people killed and five others wounded, with one victim being in critical condition.​

Authorities are investigating after four people were killed and five others were wounded in a stabbing spree in Rockford on Wednesday afternoon.

An adult male attacked and stabbed multiple individuals just after 1:10 p.m. in a residential area near Cleveland Avenue, Holmes Street and Eggleston Road, according to police.

A suspect is in custody in connection with the stabbings, and a large police presence is still in place.

Police said that officials are still working to notify families of those killed, and also acknowledged that the attack was a "multi-jurisdictional" event, with county law enforcement officials also involved in the response.

According to officials, four of the five surviving victims were last listed in stable condition, while the fifth was in critical condition.

Three of the four individuals killed in the attack were pronounced dead at the scene, while the fourth died at a local hospital, police said

Police said a motive and circumstances behind the attack are unclear, but they do not believe any other suspects were involved.

The identities and ages of the victims are currently unknown, and the incident remains under investigation.

There is currently no further information available.

A crazy day in the neighborhood, here in Rockford. While we were at the pool today, a guy went door to door stabbing people and ran his truck over the mailman killing him.

All together 4 dead and 5 more in the hospital with one in critical condition. This occurred in walking distance from our house about a mile away. Rockford also had a stabbing this week resulting in a death at a local Walmart.

Prayers tonight for the families who are facing such loss during these senseless acts of violence.

Just goes to show us that all the gun laws in the world won’t stop crazy people from killing.
Both of these violent acts killed 5 people and injured 5 more and not a single gun was used. Cain killed his brother with a rock.

Around here, knife work is done by middle-age, drunk or drugged-out pieces of white trash, having a beef with another middle-aged, drunk or drugged-out piece of white trash. Two buddies that eventually turn on each other.

I don't know if it's a thing where all of their extra money goes into getting high, and therefore they can't afford a gun, they'd never pass a background check, they realize that there is no way that they can shoot straight while high, or something else. It's a world that I know little of, outside of the police logs in the local paper.

ROCKFORD, Ill. (CBS) -- Four people were killed and five others were injured in an attack on Wednesday afternoon in Rockford, Illinois. Police said some of the victims were stabbed.

The brutal attack ripped through one neighborhood in a span of about 20 minutes. First, Winnebago County Sheriff Gary Caruana said there was a home invasion near the intersection of Florence Street and Eggleston Road.

A young woman trying to get away was stabbed in the face and hands and seriously wounded. A Good Samaritan who tried to help her also was stabbed.

The 911 calls for the stabbing victims came in one after the other, as the attacker went on a rampage in the area of Holmes Street, Winnetka Drive, and Cleveland Avenue in Rockford. Calls for police and paramedics were soon coming in at multiple scenes in Rockford and surrounding parts of Winnebago County.

Rockford Police Chief Carla Redd said a total of four people were killed, one person was critically injured, and four other people were taken to hospitals, where their conditions were stabilized. Redd said not all of the victims were stabbed, but there were no gunshot victims.

The people who were killed were a 15-year-old girl, a 63-year-old woman, a 49-year-old man, and a 22-year-old man.

A suspect, also a 22-year-old man, was in custody late Wednesday. He was apprehended around 1:35 p.m.

"It's just devastation for all of us," said Rockford resident Ruth Gallagher. "It's a blur. It's just a nightmare."

Gallagher said her longtime mailman was among the dead. The U.S. Postal Inspection Service confirmed a letter carrier was killed in the attack.

Witnesses said the letter carrier might have been struck by a pickup truck during the violence.

"The mail carrier - he was the kindest person. He would help anybody; would step in and help - always friendly," said Gallagher. "We will miss him."

Police late Wednesday said they do not know the motive behind the attack.

"I think like most Rockfordians, just totally shaken by this act of violence, and the impact that it's having now has on multiple families' lives," said Rockford Mayor Tom McNamara.

Since the massive crime scene spans both city and county limits, investigators are asking anyone with a surveillance camera to look through it for any video that may be of assistance.

Its been stabbity stab week in Rockford and they are rattled.

Previously:

Last Sunday a young white male from "Urbana" but likely was born in Cabery IL and had gone to school in Urbana, stabbed a Walmart employee in the back in Rockford. He grabbed the knives off the shelves and then started in with racial slurs. Supposedly he was being held on bail.

This other mass casualty incident may or may not be related, though some are asking is there a connection? Between Rockford, Urbana, Meth Madness and Spring Breakers, assuredly! But the media can't bring themselves to admit that Champaign was ruined by gangs. Or that a massive drug corridor exists between Rockford to Beloit.

This is the neighborhood where the initial home invasion took place at Florence and Eggleston. The area to the immediate west is a decent subdivision of all streets named for Chicago suburbs, Skokie, Evanston, Waukegan Streets. Mostly clean well kept small bungalow homes, modest, middle class. A problem child probably lives in their midst on one of those streets.

Sounds like it was utter mayhem that spilled out of the house into the streets with pedestrian good samaritans getting slashed too.

Serious rampage.

What stood out to me at the presser was the comment:

"Not all the injured were stabbed"

Now initially I took this to mean the mail carrier got ran over by the mail truck. But this mentions baseball bats. Which sounds like homeowners had to go posse on this young man gone berzerk in their neighborhood.

There is more to this we are not being told.

From the comments on local Facebook posts - he's not a recent arrival - went to HS in Rockford, and many people knew him. Sounds like he was in trouble back in HS too. He had a police record - mostly traffic violations, although there was a dismissed charge of criminal damage to property. He is Hispanic. And there is a lot of speculation about him being a meth addict.

last time I was over there - I stopped at the Cherry Valley Mall area to get some lunch - couldn't find a single restaurant that didn't look like pus dripping ....

then - I took the streets over to the westside instead of the Bypass - not single factory was open anymore - just barely a couple of gas stations in the entire stretch >>> that's half the city gone
