The Biden administration has paused shipments of two types of precision bombs for Israel, according to a U.S. official. One is 1,800 2,000 pound bombs and the second is 1,700 500 pound bombs. The shipments were not part of the national security supplemental.

Full Statement attributable to a U.S. official, via @Liz_Friden

"The U.S. position has been that Israel should not launch a major ground operation in Rafah, where more than a million people are sheltering with nowhere else to go.

We have been engaging in a dialogue with Israel in our Strategic Consultative Group format on how they will meet the humanitarian needs of civilians in Rafah, and how to operate differently against Hamas there than they have elsewhere in Gaza.

Those discussions are ongoing and have not fully addressed our concerns. As Israeli leaders seemed to approach a decision point on such an operation, we began to carefully review proposed transfers of particular weapons to Israel that might be used in Rafah. This began in April.

As a result of that review, we have paused one shipment of weapons last week. It consists of 1,800 2,000-lb bombs and 1,700 500-lb bombs. We are especially focused on the end-use of the 2,000-lb bombs and the impact they could have in dense urban settings as we have seen in other parts of Gaza. We have not made a final determination on how to proceed with this shipment.

For certain other cases at the State Department, including JDAM kits, we are continuing the review. None of these cases involve imminent transfers – they are about future transfers.

And finally, to be clear: none of these shipments have anything to do with the Israel supplemental appropriations passed last month. All are drawn from previously appropriated funds, some many years ago. We are committed to ensuring Israel gets every dollar appropriated in the supplemental. In fact, we just approved the latest tranche of Foreign Military Financing: $827 million worth of weapons and equipment for Israel."

More SHOCKING details from this US-created fantasy deal: it is being reported that if the number of live Israeli hostages does not reach 33, then they will be “reimbursed” with bodies of dead hostages from that same category. In return, Israel would have to release ALL women and men under 19 arrested after the 10/7 attack. This would only happen in the 5th week of the 6-week cease-fire. My take: Hamas has nowhere near 33 live hostages and the Biden admin knows it. Absolutely pure evil.

Hamas continues to fire from populated areas toward the Kerem Shalom Crossing, deliberately endangering Gazan civilians and the ability of the crossing.

Just today:

Numerous launches were identified from the area of Rafah. The launches did not cross into Israeli territory and fell in Gaza.

Sirens sounded after eight launches were identified crossing from the area of Rafah. As a result of the launches, an IDF soldier was lightly injured

We are currently looking at additional shipments depending on the current operation in Rafah. Israel must not carry out an operation in Rafah without a plan that takes into account the safety of the citizens in Rafah.

Other than performing for certain elements of the Democratic Party, I'm not sure what Biden hopes to achieve here strategically by going public like this. It undermines #Israel's and U.S. deterrence and risks making a hostage deal harder to achieve. 1/2
The comments will thrill #Hamas, #IRGCterrorists, their sympathizers, and those partisan voices in the U.S. who are so drunk off of a volcanic hatred of Benjamin Netanyahu they can't see straight. But we have Americans in Gaza. What does the president say to them? All the trips in the world by Bill Burns without the credible threat of military force won't bring them home. 2/2

Senior Officials with the Israel Defense Force have told Media Publications that the Decision by the United States to Delay the Shipment of Precision-Guided Munitions to Israel, due to Ground Operations against the City of Rafah in Southern Gaza; could result in the Israeli Air Force being forced to utilize “Dumb Bombs” against Targets that would usually require a Precision Strike, possibly causing Higher Civilian Casualties.

OK pal, step right up and do it by force and see what happens !

The old phrase, "Too big for your britches," seems to apply to the Israelis currently. Before this post gets derailed, understand that it is not "anti-Israeli." There are some few on this board and certainly on others, who seem to believe that any post which does not glorify Israel is somehow anti-Semitic. That's not my intent. So, with that out of the way allow me to move on...

The Israelis have a big problem in their anti-terr war and that problem is big numbers. Those numbers don't favor Israel. Israel is more or less surrounded by hostile neighbors. Even those Muslim nations which have established diplomatic relations with Israel are hardly friendly, or perhaps it would be more accurate to describe any such friendships as less than skin deep.

The Israeli Defense Force (IDF) is not strong enough or large enough to take on the Muslim world through conventional means. The IDF is a very competent military force, but it is a relatively small one and Israel is a relatively small country. Additionally, much of the IDF's manpower is represented by reservists and when they are taken away from their civilian jobs, the country's economy suffers. There are already signs of this occurring.

In a large country like the United States, our Army Reserve and National Guard manpower requirements don't hurt the economy. In fact, a strong case can be made that those part-time soldiers (and their necessary installations and equipment) actually help our economy. In any case, their numbers are relatively small. In Israel the reservist numbers are a very large percentage of their population and calling them up for deployments does hurt their economy.

There's a more serious problem, though: No matter how many reservists are called up, they can't match the huge numbers of actual and potential soldiers in the Muslim world. Many Muslim nations have surplus of low skilled, impoverished males and their leaders might find the prospect of sending these men off on a military death march to be very appealing.

This brings us to the oft-touted Israeli "Samson Option." In a nutshell, this is Israel's (potential) option of loosing their nukes on all real and perceived enemies if Israel's survival was threatened. Some pundits have suggested that Moscow is on that list.

The Samson Option may have made a certain (though warped) amount of sense decades ago, but times have changed. Israel almost certainly no longer has a monopoly on nuclear weapons in the Middle East. It is very likely that at least some of Israel's enemies possess nukes of their own. If that is the case, the Samson Option would be nothing more than a suicide pact. Yes, the Israelis could take out huge numbers of their enemies, but they couldn't eliminate them all. Israel - a very small country - on the other hand would be obliterated. This would represent a defacto win for the Muslim world. In any case, nuclear weapons are not very effective against dispersed guerilla forces and further, no one can predict how the use of nuclear weapons might spin out of control and involve the different superpowers.

In closing, I'll admit that I don't really have a closing. I will say that we are living through extremely dangerous times and can only suggest that in addition to prepping for our families, we especially pray to The Lord for peace.

Bill, this administration is not doing this because of Michigan. Don’t fall for that head fake. Sadly the real reason is worse: the WH & State Dept. are littered with pro-Iranian paid &/or ideological agents who are preserving Hamas at the bequest of Tehran.

By withholding weapons from @Israel
in the midst of its hostage negotiations with Hamas, @POTUS
Biden sent a clear signal to Hamas that the administration was tipping the scale in the negotiations in Hamas’ favor. This took pressure off Hamas, leading it to reduce its offer to Israel, ultimately killing the deal.

Now why would Biden abandon an important ally while it was negotiating the return of hostages including five or more Americans?

The answer of course is political. Biden is at risk of losing the Muslim vote in Michigan and other key states, and he is leveraging Israel to advance himself with these constituents.

In other words, Biden is attempting to garner votes by impairing an ally’s ability to defeat a terrorist group that seeks the total destruction of Israel and the Jewish people.

I don’t know how anyone that cares about Israel or the Jewish people could vote for Biden due to his actions here.

Even if you don’t care about Jews or Israel, think about the damage this does to our relationships with allies around the world. Biden has made eminently clear that he is prepared to impair one of our key allies’ ability to fight an enemy in order to win more votes at home.

A president who cared about his reputation and that of our country would never behave this way. I can therefore only conclude that these disastrous policy decisions are made by others in the administration as the president no longer has the capability or judgment to make them himself.

Do we really want four more years of this?

yes, that's been the most perplexing and "interesting" aspect of it all. We've seen some voices over the last years, like those publishing in Tablet Magazine, urging them to face the sad truth of the need to cut the cord- but there are still so many who're inexplicably wedded to their positions.

- it is said that the more something costs, the more fiercely you resist letting it go, which is still not a great explanation of the support we see them giving folks, against their own self interest, but it may be part of the explanation :: shrug ::

Biden says US won't supply weapons for Israel to attack Rafah, in warning to ally
By ZEKE MILLER and AAMER MADHANI
9–11 minutes

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Joe Biden said Wednesday that he would not supply offensive weapons that Israel could use to launch an all-out assault on Rafah — the last major Hamas stronghold in Gaza — over concern for the well-being of the more than 1 million civilians sheltering there.

Biden, in an interview with CNN, said the U.S. was still committed to Israel’s defense and would supply Iron Dome rocket interceptors and other defensive arms, but that if Israel goes into Rafah, “we’re not going to supply the weapons and artillery shells used.”

The U.S. has historically provided enormous amounts of military aid to Israel. That has only accelerated in the aftermath of Hamas’ Oct. 7 attack that killed some 1,200 in Israel and led to about 250 being taken captive by militants. Biden’s comments and his decision last week to pause a shipment of heavy bombs to Israel are the most striking manifestations of the growing daylight between his administration and Israel Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s government. Biden said Wednesday that Israel’s actions around Rafah had “not yet” crossed his red lines, but has repeated that Israel needs to do far more to protect the lives of civilians in Gaza.

The shipment was supposed to consist of 1,800 2,000-pound (900-kilogram) bombs and 1,700 500-pound (225-kilogram) bombs, according to a senior U.S. administration official who spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss the sensitive matter. The focus of U.S. concern was the larger explosives and how they could be used in a dense urban area.

“Civilians have been killed in Gaza as a consequence of those bombs and other ways in which they go after population centers,” Biden told CNN. “I made it clear that if they go into Rafah — they haven’t gone in Rafah yet — if they go into Rafah, I’m not supplying the weapons that have been used historically to deal with Rafah, to deal with the cities, that deal with that problem.”

“We’re not walking away from Israel’s security,” Biden continued. “We’re walking away from Israel’s ability to wage war in those areas.”

Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin earlier Wednesday confirmed the weapons delay, telling the Senate Appropriations Subcommittee on Defense that the U.S. paused “one shipment of high payload munitions.”

“We’re going to continue to do what’s necessary to ensure that Israel has the means to defend itself,” Austin said. “But that said, we are currently reviewing some near-term security assistance shipments in the context of unfolding events in Rafah.”

It also comes as the Biden administration is due to deliver a first-of-its-kind formal verdict this week on whether the airstrikes on Gaza and restrictions on delivery of aid have violated international and U.S. laws designed to spare civilians from the worst horrors of war. A decision against Israel would further add to pressure on Biden to curb the flow of weapons and money to Israel’s military.

Biden signed off on the pause in an order conveyed last week to the Pentagon, according to U.S. officials who were not authorized to comment on the matter. The White House National Security Council sought to keep the decision out of the public eye for several days until it had a better understanding of the scope of Israel’s intensified military operations in Rafah and until Biden could deliver a long-planned speech on Tuesday to mark Holocaust Remembrance Day.

Biden’s administration in April began reviewing future transfers of military assistance as Netanyahu’s government appeared to move closer toward an invasion of Rafah, despite months of opposition from the White House. The official said the decision to pause the shipment was made last week and no final decision had been made yet on whether to proceed with the shipment at a later date.

U.S. officials had declined for days to comment on the halted transfer, word of which came as Biden on Tuesday described U.S. support for Israel as “ironclad, even when we disagree.”

Israel’s ambassador to the United Nations, Gilad Erdan, in an interview with Israeli Channel 12 TV news, said the decision to pause the shipment was “a very disappointing decision, even frustrating.” He suggested the move stemmed from political pressure on Biden from Congress, the U.S. campus protests and the upcoming election.

The decision also drew a sharp rebuke from House Speaker Mike Johnson and Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell, who said they only learned about the military aid holdup from press reports, despite assurances from the Biden administration that no such pauses were in the works. The Republicans called on Biden in a letter to swiftly end the blockage, saying it “risks emboldening Israel’s enemies,” and to brief lawmakers on the nature of the policy reviews.

Biden has faced pressure from some on the left — and condemnation from the critics on the right who say Biden has moderated his support for an essential Mideast ally.

“If we stop weapons necessary to destroy the enemies of the state of Israel at a time of great peril, we will pay a price,” said Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., his voice rising in anger during an exchange with Austin. “This is obscene. It is absurd. Give Israel what they need to fight the war they can’t afford to lose.”

Independent Sen. Bernie Sanders of Vermont, a Biden ally, said in a statement the pause on big bombs must be a “first step.”

“Our leverage is clear,” Sanders said. “Over the years, the United States has provided tens of billions of dollars in military aid to Israel. We can no longer be complicit in Netanyahu’s horrific war against the Palestinian people.”

Austin, meanwhile, told lawmakers that “it’s about having the right kinds of weapons for the task at hand.”

“A small diameter bomb, which is a precision weapon, that’s very useful in a dense, built-up environment,” he said, “but maybe not so much a 2,000-pound bomb that could create a lot of collateral damage.” He said the U.S. wants to see Israel do “more precise” operations.

Israeli troops on Tuesday seized control of Gaza’s vital Rafah border crossing in what the White House described as a limited operation that stopped short of the full-on Israeli invasion of the city that Biden has repeatedly warned against, most recently in a Monday call with Netanyahu.

Israel has ordered the evacuation of 100,000 Palestinians from the city. Israeli forces have also carried out what it describes as “targeted strikes” on the eastern part of Rafah and captured the Rafah crossing, a critical conduit for the flow of humanitarian aid along the Gaza-Egypt border.

Privately, concern has mounted inside the White House about what’s unfolding in Rafah, but publicly administration officials have stressed that they did not think the operations had defied Biden’s warnings against a widescale operation in the city.

The State Department is separately considering whether to approve the continued transfer of Joint Direct Attack Munition kits, which place precision guidance systems onto bombs, to Israel, but the review didn’t pertain to imminent shipments.

Itamar Yaar, former deputy head of Israel’s National Security Council said the U.S. move is largely symbolic, but a sign of trouble and could become more of a problem if it is sustained.

“It’s not some kind of American embargo on American munitions support, but I think its some kind of diplomatic message to Mr. Netanyahu that he needs to take into consideration American interests more than he has over the last few months,” he said. “At least for now it will not impact Israeli capability but it’s some kind of a signal, a ‘be careful.’”

The U.S. dropped the 2,000-pound bomb sparingly in its long war against the Islamic State militant group. Israel, by contrast, has used the bomb frequently in the seven-month Gaza war. Experts say the use of the weapon, in part, has helped drive the enormous Palestinian casualty count that the Hamas-run health ministry puts at more than 34,000 dead, though it doesn’t distinguish between militants and civilians.

The U.S.-Israel relationship has been close through both Democratic and Republican administrations. But there have been other moments of deep tension since Israel’s founding in which U.S. leaders have threatened to hold up aid in an attempt to sway Israeli leadership.

President Dwight Eisenhower pressured Israel with the threat of sanctions into withdrawing from the Sinai in 1957 amid the Suez Crisis. Ronald Reagan delayed the delivery of F16 fighter jets to Israel at a time of escalating violence in the Middle East. President George H.W. Bush held up $10 billion in loan guarantees to force the cessation of Israeli settlement activity in the occupied territories.

Anyway, the only people who are truly surprised about Biden's abandonment of Israel are the ones who don't know anything about anything.

And no it is not *only* about domestic politics. It is also perfectly in line with Obama-Biden realignment in the MidEast. I cannot stress this enough. A weakened Israel is necessary for that realignment. Nothing happens in a vacuum.

Yeah, the first round was a "warm up". Proving they're able to put an air launched 2000 lb ballistically flown payload over 1000 miles and drop it into a circle akin to 4 parking spaces should have shut this nonsense down.

That it hasn't means Act 2 may well be very "bright" and "loud".
